“Food and service were lacking”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

We were expecting an expensive meal, but the quality and flavor of the food left much to be desired. We had an 8:45 reservation and were seated at 9:25. Even though we were ravenous, the appetizers, main courses, and desserts were unsavory and forgettable. We will not return.

“Overpriced, mediocre food, small portions. Restaurant very limited menu. Some food very poor. Had 2 desserts almost unedible.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2013 via mobile

Lorie, primary bartender, is a mainstay and a huge asset to the Lodge. Generally, food is mediocre and very limited at Artisan Restaurant, although better at Pub. Portions can be very small. For example, a side of vegetables is petite which seems very cheap. Food is overpriced.
Lodge is doing poorly, and this is obvious to guests since while rooms and food and drinks are expensive, quality is mediocre.

Dear Dancingbearf-2,

We thank you for submitting your review to Trip Advisor. We are sorry you feel that our offerings were mediocre, and our menus limited. That of course is not our goal. There are many fine restaurants in the Lake Placid area for guests to choose from including the one who’s name shares the your reviewer pseudonym. Guests rely on these reviews to help make the right decision, if not to assure an overall experience, but to protect the precious time they have to enjoy a brief break.

A great many staff members are dedicated to delivering what we hope will be considered the finest Lodge experience. Our entire team commit countless dedicated hours, some of course highly visible like Lori, but many unseen to our guests. I am personally very appreciative to all of our guests, those that stay with us at The Lodge, those choosing to dine while staying with one of Lake Placid’ s great hotels and especially the many loyal local guests that join us frequently. I am equally appreciative to all of our staff for their tireless dedication to those guests and their experience.

The scope of and design of menus is a tricky task, but we do feel that the absolute vast majority of our guests are enjoying our offerings including seven course tasting menus, a la cart menu options, vegan offerings, dedicated vegetarian menus, as well as menus that are highly approachable and appeal to our need for comfort. Our staff are trained to observe our guests closely when ordering and to adjust if they see that we have not anticipated their needs. Our culinary team, led by Chef Nathan Rich was awarded the Relais & Chateaux Rising Chef Award this year– one of only 3 chefs to so throughout the world – and a true testament to the entire team’s dedication and hard work. We do frequently check with our guests as to their complete enjoyment of the dishes we prepare. I would encourage you to please let us know if a dish has not been prepared to your liking, I promise we will make it right. I wish I could say they come out perfectly every single time, (we do our utmost to do so) but I cant. However, I can promise, that if it’s not to your liking, we will make it so.

Finally regarding your statement that the Lodge is doing poorly. I am not sure what you mean by this, and am happy to discuss this with you. The Lodge has a long history of being an integral part of that Lake Placid community. It’s success is intrinsically entwined with the success of our community and our destination. By all accounts, the Lake Placid Lodge has just concluded its most successful year yet, and hopefully that has helped us all in this wonderful part of the Adirondacks.

Kind regards,
John Graham

“Expensive but good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Food is inventive and very good. Service is excellent. Views and ambience without compare. Staff are great, but seem a little sparce for level at which they are expected to perform.

“Nicest Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2013

This was our Christmas present to eachother. Instead of buying presents, we chose to go out for a beautiful dinner at a nice place, and luckily we chose the Nicest Place. The building itself is awesome. It's shape, and excellent construction...it is so large, yet so decoative and just gorgeous - there has been so much attention paid to detail. Now for the food,...after walking into a dining room decorated with the largest Christmas tree you've ever seen in your life, you sit down inftont of a beautiful fire and peruse the menu full of gormet foods, where I'm sure you couldn't make a wrong choice. Our meal was perfect, as was our experience, and our Christmas.

“Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

The atmosphere was nice, they are reputed to have an amazing wine cellar (but we don't care for wine), the service was good and the food was OK. However, the prices were sky high and the portions were miniscule. Here, the plates are quite large and the meal size quite small making it disappear like a raft in the ocean.
