“value with great location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

After checking rates for other hotels we decided to stay here because of price and location. We love being able to exit the lobby and being in the center of all the small stores to shop. The hotel is a great value , but the could definately use some new carpet and some updating. Employees are always nice and helpful.

Room Tip: ask for peak views - 5th floor

We stayed during a peak fall weekend, so our normal hotel choices were either booked or outrageously priced. We've eaten breakfast at the Northwood's restaurant on several other trips, so we gave the hotel a chance. The rooms were small, but we had no major complaints. We were on the 5th floor with a view of main street and the lake.

Pros -
Great location, clean, windows that you can actually open, decent restaurant, quiet (they had live music in the bar both nights, but we couldn't hear a thing)

Cons-
Needs a facelift, no refrigerator or hair dryer in the rooms or electronic keys (aren't these standard equipment in 2103?), small parking lot

This is a historic property in a great location. According to the hotel website, they are slowly refurbishing the rooms (we did not have one of the updated ones that are in the hotel provided photos above) and the rooftop (that will be a great addition). I hope they continue to work on it; so many places like this vanish with the times. At least this one is still going in pretty good shape.

I'd stay here again if the price were right, but there are many other places to try.

Room Tip: 5th or 6th floor with a view of Main Street and the Lake.

When traveling we normally choose "chain" hotels just for the reliability but we were in Lake Placid for a conference and stayed at the Northwoods Inn. The town of Lake Placid is a small town with buildings that have seen better days. But it is obvious that the locals take great pride in their town and have done lots of work to update the look and feel of downtown area. The Northwoods Inn is located on the main street and is very convenient to shops and restaurants. The rooms are older but perfectly adequate. The mattress was very soft foam and we were worried that it would hurt our backs but it did not bother us at all. The elevator was vintage - wooden and made noises but worked fine. The hot water did go off one morning - when we returned later to the hotel an apology letter and lovely bottle of wine offset any inconvenience. Great staff - very helpful and very friendly.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the street and on the 6th floor if you want a view of Mirror Lake - beautiful...

We had a king suite on the fourth floor overlooking Main St and the lake. Nice, clean, comfortable room with a great bed. Perfect location right in the middle of town with on-site parking. Delta Blue pub offered good food, fairly priced. Overall good value and nice place to stay right in town. Very friendly and accommodating management and staff. Definitely coming back again.

Room Tip: Don't be put-off by the age of this historic hotel. Some floors may creak, but it is comfortable...

The only thing positive is the cleanliness (for now...) Our door's double lock didn't even work... Very very basic furniture, the bed was uncomfortable, the sheets were rough... No service! We even had to godown to the the "Front" desk to get our Ice!!!

This is a very old hotel, in fact my mother worked there as a teenager in the 1930's, it is old and has that old building smell of musty and being run down. The paint jobs all look like they were done by a five year old. The rooms are small, dingy, smelly and musty. The carpets appear to be pieces of five foot carpet squares that are frayed. The TV's are old style (no dials however), no microwaves or refrigerators that one looks for. There is a small coffee pot with enough coffee for two cups only. The drains in the bathtubs run very, very slow, the tub liners have been repainted but also look like done by a five year old. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Parking is not the best thing for a hotel, just about non existence. The meal we had was very good and the blues bands playing this weekend were great.. Our balcony looked like it hadn't been cleaned (papers and dirt around the edges) or painted in at least five years. It was as they say "what you paid for" don't expect too much. The owners are trying their best at the present time to fix the place up, I wish them luck and will come back next year to see the improvements.

Room Tip: The back side by the parking lot is noisy at night with all the bar patrons leaving and people comin...

First things first - the mattresses are SOFT. They advertise that all their rooms have Tempur-Pedic mattresses and that may be great for some people, but we could not spend more than one night here. We had been booked in for a week but we had to move. The staff at the front desk was very nice about the fact that we were checking out after a night, which is why I'm rating this "poor" instead of "terrible".
The room was very small - we had to kind of walk sideways to get between the bed and the dresser (and I am a small person). The kitchenette was also small but basically functional, although I'm glad we didn't have to do more than cook breakfast in it. The most awkward part was that the sink was on an angle, underneath a big cupboard, and it was kind of hard to work around it. There was no table, just a counter to eat at and bar stools.
We were on the top floor, lakeside, and the view was quite nice. Windows opened a little ways, which was good because otherwise it was stuffy. You will hear street noise too.
We will never stay here again, and I think the only reason someone would is if you want to be right downtown. There are plenty of other reasonable options that are so much nicer.
