Lake Placid Lodge

My husband and I travel frequently and we are fortunate to have enjoyed many wonderful hotels. We were extremely disappointed in the Lake Placid Lodge. The cabins are cramped onto a small piece of lakefrount property, basically providing a sliver of a lake view, and mostly a view of the activities of the nearby cabins. Neighbors walk within feet of the picture window in the cabin, and easily see in.
We found that keeping the drapes drawn provided privacy, but the low ceilinged, very poorly lit cabin seemed more like a bat cave than a romantic, high end respite. Unfortunately the small cabin also had sewage odor coming from the tiny bathroom, that pervaded the space.
We were provided with no information regarding the amenities on the property. In fact we found out, as we were leaving, that there were common spaces on the property and tea in the afternoon. We also were not told at checkin that breakfast was included. On the first morning, we had breakfast on the property, and it was inedible. The eggs benedict with salmon was made with soggy bread and unpleasnt fishy salmon. Of course we did not realize this was included in our stay until check out. And although they had a sewing basket and a toiletries goodies bag in the room on our arrival, the wireless internet service was down for our entire stay. Unfortunately this was planned as a working vacation for us and we were unable to work at all. No cell service, no TV, not even a stereo in the rooms. The front destk staff was very pleasant, but had no real idea how important the internet situation was. This was also not taken into account at check-out. We would honestly have left, but we were told that we would be charged for the full stay whether we stayed or not. I got the feeling that this was more of a seasonal/tourist resort that relies on maintaining the bottom line and keeping costs down rather than maintaining quality to turn a profit. The staff was also completey unable to reccomend any outside restaurants or activities. I would say the Lake Placid Lodge looks much better on its website that it presents in real life.

We were given two nights at the Lake Placid Lodge as a gift for our wedding night. We stayed at the Owl's Head cabin located directly on the shores of Lake Placid, and I cannot say enough about how perfect our stay was. The Lodge has re-opened with limited capacity after a devastating fire, and although the main lodge is not rebuilt yet, they have restored another cabin on the water into a full dining cabin. Breakfast on the porch overlooking the lake and perfect views of Whiteface Mountain. Dinner by candlelight with exquisite fair and wine. The staff is extremely courteous and will either leave you alone or bring you towels and firewood when needed, or wait on your every need if requested. I have not been in the other cabins, but the Owl's Head is the quintessential Adirondack cabin, with the utmost privacy and the most amazing views right from your bed!

“Memorable Weekend”

Lake Placid Lodge

May 29, 2007
4/4 found this review helpful

This resort was recommended by some coworkers as the "perfect" place to spend a romantic weekend. We stayed in one of the studio cabins and were impressed with the custom made furniture, huge fireplaces and incredibly comfortable bed. The bathrooms are also amazing and a huge contrast to the rustic, although luxurious living area. The main lodge, which I was told historically housed the reception, bar, restaurant, etc, burnt down several years ago, although I would not have been able to tell if I had not read it on their website before my stay. They have converted some of the larger cabins into a reception area and restaurant, which works very nicely. The new lodge was under construction during our stay and should be open early next year. Their website has a nice little video showing the planned new lodge which is very impressive. I will definitely be returning for a weekend next year once all of the work is completed.

The breakfast (included for all guests) was by far the best I have ever had. This is coming from a guy who loves his breakfasts, so it really means something. I still have dreams about the banana chocolate chip muffins. You can have your meal on a little deck, literally a few feet off the lake, which is an incredibly peaceful and relaxing place to take your morning meal. Dinner was good as well, although they have a limited menu until the new main lodge building is completed.

Overall, I was beyond pleased with my weekend at the Lake Placid Lodge. The experience was well worth the price and I would probably pay more if I had to.

“Peaceful & relaxing”

Peaceful, restful, great Adirondack ambiance. Stayed in cabin a few feet from lake (Eagles Eyre). Would recommend this cabin to a newcomer. Bed was amazing with fireplace and sitting area that had a view of the lake and Whiteface Mountain through a wall of glass. Very quite. No TVs except in recreation lounge. That's the way we like it. Very pet friendly and may bring up "Bo" next time.

Service was fantastic. Stayed in late January into February. Snowed almost daily which we loved. Staffed kept the wood coming and shoveled walkways and, yes, even cleaned off our car each morning. Staff very pleasant & attentive to all our needs and seem to anticipate them before being asked. Had all meals in intimate setting (temporary cabin converted into dining room due to recent fire at main lodge). While very limited menu, which we were aware of in advance, the meals were terrific letting us know the menu the previous day in the event we wanted to go elsewhere. Breadfast had several choices and were delicious and upscale.

Loved Buddy, dog owned by one of the staff (Meagan). Greeted us daily. We stayed in the main lodge 4 years ago and they plan to rebuild with tentative completion date in 2008. Can't wait to come back to see new accommodations.

My wife and I stay in some of the most expensive resorts and while some feel Lake Placid Lodge is expensive, it is worth every penny considering the level of service, unique accommodations and location (high priced real estate right on one of the best lakes on the east coast).

Thanks to the staff. Will be back.

My husband and I stayed at the Lake Placid Lodge during our honeymoon during the summer of 2006.

The accomodations were lovely. We stayed at the Owl's Head, which was cozy and comfortable, without being fussy. The bed and linens were very nice however the jacuzzi tub's neck rest was broken and kept falling off - nothing major when you are reviewing a five-star establishment, it must be mentioned. Robes, towels, and toiletries were all well supplied.

The breakfasts were nothing short of amazing whether served in room or at the lakeside. Staff during breakfast were unobtrusive and yet attentive.

We participated in several activities on the property which included the champagne cruise and fireside s'mores and were happy to meet our fellow lodgers. I was admittedly a bit apprehensive because my husband and I were significantly younger than most others lodgers but we always felt welcome during these times.

The property manager Megan merits mention in this review. She is a friendly, attentive, and very down to earth manager who did everything right. An example of her above and beyond service and great attitude: my husband missed our dogs while we were away so she was sure to send her pup Buddy over his way for a pet! She was wonderful!

We did go golfing during our stay and were disappointed with the lack of information at the office about area golf courses - even the one next tot the property was quoted at the incorrect price. In the end, we had a nice round of golf but again, at a five-star establishment, one would expect the correct information or at least some numbers to call. We ended up using the phone book.

Other small mishaps included being called by the incorrect name on several occasions, being called by the incorrect title on several occasions, and I didn't really enjoy having someone telephone us every evening to ask if we wanted turn-down service. Additionally, the area behind the lodges where you park your car is shockingly full and populated. Although it appears off the beaten path, there is condos directly behind the lodges, which were under construction during our stay so it was a bit noisier than I had expect and a bit more secluded.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience, enjoyed our stay - it was relaxing, which was exactly what we wanted and we felt spoiled the entire time.
