“A wonderful, homely experience”

Lake Placid Lodge

Jul 21, 2008

We stayed at Lake Placid lodge after attending a weeding in Long Island. We found our stay there was a truly memorable experience.

It is often difficult to separate the hotel and the location/ place and weather when reviewing. To give some context, we had wonderful, unseasonably warm weather (without the insects of summer), and we loved the hiking set up in the Adirondacks and the general friendliness of the area. So we had a great trip. The hotel played a major role in this, however.

The check-in is very welcoming and unstuffy. You feel like you are coming into someone's house as a quest, and people are very forthcoming in giving ideas of the best places to go walking.

The room overlooks the lake and is very peaceful. Although people could walk across the lakefront infront of the cabin, we did not experience this during our stay of 3 nights.

The room was in an L-shape, with the sofa overlooking the fire on one side, and the bed around the corner. Although this meant that the fire did not warm the bed, we never felt cold in the lodge.

One important element in making the experience great was the charging structure. Yes, the Lodge is expensive, but the idea that everything is included is so much more welcoming. There's no mini-bar nonsense, you can take what you like. In fact, after filling up on breakfast, which was excellent each day, we took some snacks for our hikes and didn't feel hungry until the evening. The warm cider and cookies for after the walk were also very welcome and comforting for tired hikers. I would strongly recommend this place to others.

“Loved the cabins”

Lake Placid Lodge

Jul 11, 2008

One of my favorite spots.
Cabins on the lake.
Adirondack-style interior. Really lovely.
Refrigerator, sink, mini-bar.
Roaring fire in the cabin.
Breakfast seved in cabin.
Terrific restaurant on site--BUT WARNING--the wine menu is TERRIBLE and VERY overpriced. TIP: BRING YOUR OWN WINE!!! The $20 corkage fee is worth it!

“Beautiful lake views”

Lake Placid Lodge

Oct 24, 2007

Overall, we had a lovely stay at the Lake Placid Lodge. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Paul and Matt who gave us a tour of the property and brought our bags to our room. Very laid back, very hospitable. Made us feel at home.

The main reason we chose this property is because we wanted a more upscale experience that would allow us to bring our dog. While it does cost an extra $75 per night to bring a pooch, there were lots of nice little touches, such as an LL Bean dog bed, food/water bowls, toys and treats on arrival and a nightly dog cupcake with turn down service. We're the types that love that kind of stuff so it was really appreciated.

Twice daily housekeeping was stellar. Lots of attention to detail like always prepping the fireplace for use, replacing all used towels and toiletries, etc. Only complaint I had was that they left the door opened when cleaning and we'd always come back to about 4-6 new flies in our cabin. (This was specifically why we never used the pooper scooper they provided--we always used bags because we wanted to avoid flies around our cabin.) Oh, and one thing I wish they would change in the cabins is the amount of lighting....it was so dark inside the cabins, especially at night or when it rained.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the main lodge burned down so there is a lot of construction going on. The location of Lake Placid Lodge is more crowded than the photos on the website make it appear. Therefore, we rarely heard the sounds of peace and nature. This seemed prevalent throughout the entire area around the lodge...there are trails up the road and even when we were in the middle of the woods, you could always hear some sort of machinery. But on the bright side, when we sat outside of our cabin, we had a beautiful, unobstructed view of the lake.

One afternoon, Paul took us with some other guests for a boat tour around the lake--very relaxing, nice way to chat with other guests, and informative too.

Breakfast was nice each morning....we liked the fact that they served until 11:30am. Very cozy set up with the fireplace, throw blankets, newspapers, etc.

Other than the minor things I mentioned earlier, the Lake Placid Lodge was great and I am sure it will be superior once the construction is done.

“Good but not great”

My husband and I stayed at the Lake Placid Lodge (LPL) for a few days early October.

What we liked:
The property is right on Lake Placid. The setting is beautiful and serene, with mountains and their reflections mirroring in the lake. Because of a fire that burned down the main lodge in 2005, one waterside cabin was turned into a dining room that had a wonderful view of Lake Placid, while another cabin was turned into a common room where there is a flat screen tv, reading/game room and bumper pool table. There are kayaks and canoes to use. Even novices like my husband and I had no problems paddling on the very calm and scenic Lake Placid. There are also mountain bikes to use. One aspect we really liked was the staff. They were friendly, particularly the grounds/maintenance staff, who helped us with our kayak and gear. The staff worked hard and were always ready to help.

Even though there are other buildings in the immediate area, the individual cabins felt secluded. The best feature of the cabins is the wood-burning fireplace in each. It gave the cabin a very cozy and intimate feel. Our cabin had a small supply of complimentary bottled waters, soft-drinks, juice, coffee/tea, and a few snacks. There was also a small bottle of wine. The bed was comfortable with a warm duvet and was always nicely made. (Although, we found the many pillows to be too soft.) Linen was fine as were the towels that were refreshed twice everyday as there was a nightly turn-down service. The bathroom had a nice soaking tub. There were generous-sized toiletries and extras, such as a loofah scrub, bath salts and gel. There was also a separate shower stall – which was a good feature although it lacked aesthetic appeal.

What we didn’t like:
I knew our cabin, Rondeau, was not on the edge of the water like some of the cabins. Our view from our cabin was mostly of a walking path to another cabin and the view of the lake was a small smidget in between two cabins. I inquired if waterside cabins were available but came up empty. If you are staying here in the cabins, I highly recommend paying more to get a waterside cabin.

We liked the Adirondack-style furnishings and found it very appropriate for the cabins and setting we were in. We really liked the natural and rustic décor of the dining room and the common room. Our particular cabin décor, however, was not very appealing – the ceiling was made of birch wood. Its peeling bark feature albeit interesting on the tree, felt out of place on the ceiling. It was not very pretty and it felt like the bark can come down on us any minute. There were a lot of windows in the cabin. At night, when the curtains are drawn, we were staring at quite a bit of green/blue plaid curtains, which were not very attractive, in our opinion.

This was my first time staying at a Relais & Chateaux hotel. I am under the impression that LPL is trying to be on par with the Four Seasons/Ritz Carlton type of hotel. I think it falls short. LPL lacked the little details that made you feel like you are in a first class establishment. The “complementary” food items we consumed were not replenished, i.e. coffee and sugar, along with a bag of chips. It gave us the impression that we were limited to the ration assigned to our cabin. (They did replenish the bottled waters.) Some items in our cabin need to be refurbished or fixed - i.e., fabric on the arms of both armchairs was frayed and peeling off at the edges. The toilet in our cabin did not flush well and the lever on the tank needed to be fixed as the water ran constantly. All of the above “gripes” are ok at a lower class hotel, not at a hotel that is charging and marketing itself as a first class establishment.

Overall, we felt it was a good stay but didn’t feel there was enough value for the price paid.

We stayed in a lake-front cabin for 4 days over Labor Day weekend. Rustic luxury and a low-key atmosphere are our idea of heaven and we were very well pleased at LPL. A few points of information: The cabins are less than ten feet from the lake along a @1,000 foot sliver of lake frontage. Directly behind the sliver is the White Face Club, a large 70s condo resort in need of help. One used to enter through the lodge's parcel and avoid the condo scene. The lodge itself burned down in 2005 and is currently being reconstructed; the very large area around the lodge is a fenced off construction site; and one now enters the property through the condo club. Hence, serenity is postponed until you pass through. We were there one work day and construction noise was clearly audible. Over the weekend there was no noise. A three course, choose one of two entrees dinner is price fixed at $45, a bargain that somewhat compensates for the pricey room charge.

All the cabins have a stunning, dead-on view of the lake, its islands and the mountains beyond. I was mesmerized and delighted. Our cabin was incredibly well furnished and appointed in an eclectic, Adirondacky decor- one that I'd rather visit than have in my home, but is 100% appropriate to the experience. If you are looking for gilded Ritz-Carlton regency la fufu, this isn't it. Cabins are 25 to 100 feet apart, but well screened by immaculately kept landscaping. There is a covered walkway behind the cabins meant for getting to and from different areas. Almost predictably, a couple guests over four days chose to walk between the cabins and the lake to get to their cabin and also peer into and check out their neighbors' cabins. Annoying, yes; but what can you do?

The food was very well prepared contemporary fare with just a bit of a comfort food angle, more simple than one would find at a similarly pricey urban hotel, but wholly appropriate to the experience and the setting.

Activities consist of relaxing, chilling out, napping and daydreaming. You can also take a motor boat cruise on the lake; toodle around in the electric boats; ride mountain bikes; play board games or go hiking. If you are looking for tennis at ten; pilates at eleven and a newcomers mixer at twelve, LPL isn't for you. If your idea of a good time is getting a little loud, the atmosphere runs counter to that. The net net of all this is my idea of perfection, but certainly not everyone's.

IMO, the service was great- nice people, real people willing to go out of their way to accommodate you. Mind you, Ritz-Carlton "my pleasure" makes my skin crawl and bellhops diving to carry my bag the last hundred feet after I just carted it half-way round the world seem useles to me. So, if you like what I don't like (and many people do), you might not agree with me. An example of what pleased me- one night the choice of entrees was tuna or duck, neither of which thrill me. Upon asking if there was an alternative, the chef came out and offered to prepare any one of a half dozen alternatives.

I was a road warrior for ten years, love to travel, do so frequently and am very picky (in my own way) when it comes to hotels. I LOVED Lake Placid Lodge. I'm too cheap to spend this kind of money often, but LPL was worth it and excellent value for the money.
