We stayed in a lake-front cabin for 4 days over Labor Day weekend. Rustic luxury and a low-key atmosphere are our idea of heaven and we were very well pleased at LPL. A few points of information: The cabins are less than ten feet from the lake along a @1,000 foot sliver of lake frontage. Directly behind the sliver is the White Face Club, a large 70s condo resort in need of help. One used to enter through the lodge's parcel and avoid the condo scene. The lodge itself burned down in 2005 and is currently being reconstructed; the very large area around the lodge is a fenced off construction site; and one now enters the property through the condo club. Hence, serenity is postponed until you pass through. We were there one work day and construction noise was clearly audible. Over the weekend there was no noise. A three course, choose one of two entrees dinner is price fixed at $45, a bargain that somewhat compensates for the pricey room charge.
All the cabins have a stunning, dead-on view of the lake, its islands and the mountains beyond. I was mesmerized and delighted. Our cabin was incredibly well furnished and appointed in an eclectic, Adirondacky decor- one that I'd rather visit than have in my home, but is 100% appropriate to the experience. If you are looking for gilded Ritz-Carlton regency la fufu, this isn't it. Cabins are 25 to 100 feet apart, but well screened by immaculately kept landscaping. There is a covered walkway behind the cabins meant for getting to and from different areas. Almost predictably, a couple guests over four days chose to walk between the cabins and the lake to get to their cabin and also peer into and check out their neighbors' cabins. Annoying, yes; but what can you do?
The food was very well prepared contemporary fare with just a bit of a comfort food angle, more simple than one would find at a similarly pricey urban hotel, but wholly appropriate to the experience and the setting.
Activities consist of relaxing, chilling out, napping and daydreaming. You can also take a motor boat cruise on the lake; toodle around in the electric boats; ride mountain bikes; play board games or go hiking. If you are looking for tennis at ten; pilates at eleven and a newcomers mixer at twelve, LPL isn't for you. If your idea of a good time is getting a little loud, the atmosphere runs counter to that. The net net of all this is my idea of perfection, but certainly not everyone's.
IMO, the service was great- nice people, real people willing to go out of their way to accommodate you. Mind you, Ritz-Carlton "my pleasure" makes my skin crawl and bellhops diving to carry my bag the last hundred feet after I just carted it half-way round the world seem useles to me. So, if you like what I don't like (and many people do), you might not agree with me. An example of what pleased me- one night the choice of entrees was tuna or duck, neither of which thrill me. Upon asking if there was an alternative, the chef came out and offered to prepare any one of a half dozen alternatives.
I was a road warrior for ten years, love to travel, do so frequently and am very picky (in my own way) when it comes to hotels. I LOVED Lake Placid Lodge. I'm too cheap to spend this kind of money often, but LPL was worth it and excellent value for the money.
