“Lovely berberhouse with stunning view Palmerai vallee”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 30, 2011

We just come back from our trip (3 weeks) with our four kids (teens) threw Marocco.
www.expedition6.cinev.nl
On our way from Merzouga (desert-bivouac) to the Todra we spend 2 nights in Palemerai House, where we had a fantastic time. Actually to short, because the atmosphere was so relaxing and pleasant in this little berberhouse. Rachid and his brother Jawad (he's such a wunderful chef, with his delicious food) are great guys! Very very welcome, and the kids had great fun playing games etc. with them.
The rooms are spacious, clean and cool (while we were there it was moren than 43 degres). We loved to walk in the Palmerai, it's so exotic and the fileds lay directly behind the house. We had great fun with Jawad and Jamal who joined us tot the river for swimming which the local bathing with the little boys.
The view from the toproof is stunning! Here you find a loverly terrace, were we drunk berberwhiskey and played games under the beautiful berbertarp. OK, we were the only guests, but we were which 6 and 4 staff the house is filled.
More than friendly staff, but really personal setting, so feels like home!

This is a place you might want to skip. First of all, there are about 60 steps down from the road to the front door - a long way if you are carrying your luggage. And you *will* be carrying your luggage, because there is no one there to help you. So if you are elderly, disabled, or in way incapable - and you have the audacity to mention the crumbling stairs - you will be verbally castigated by the "diswelcoming committee" aka the proprietess. If you ask for directions, you will be given a lecture on the difference between a guesthouse and the tourist office. Unfriendly, even hostile. Overpriced, and just generally creepy.

Room Tip: Don't accept any of the external shed rooms

Rochid and Doreen have done a super job with this guesthouse. It is a lovely place to stay. Super food, excellent views. Rochid and Doreen are very helpful and can not do enough to help you. The rooms are comfortable and the terrace has a lovely view.

There are some super walks that you can do and a very interesting and relaxing place to stay.

This was my first trip to Morocco and after the wonderful days we spent at Palmeraie Guesthouse, it certainly won't be my last...

What an excellent stay we had! This gem of a guesthouse is set against a truly stunning backdrop of a lush palmeraie and kasbah. Very close to the town of Tinghir, perfect for any market shopping fans, within a great walk to Todra Gorge and not far from the Sahara for an adventure in the desert.

The guesthouse owners, Doreen and Rachid, were the perfect hosts making us feel very welcome and at home. They were more than happy to help plan and organise our itinerary for our 5 days with them. Some highlights were a guided walking tour through the palmeraie to Todra Gorge, a trip to the big market in Tinghir and one of our best memories, a camel ride and overnight stay in the Sahara desert.

The guesthouse itself is very spacious with a choice of rooms from the cool double rooms (ideal for families) on the lower floors to ensuite rooms. There are a few roof terraces where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing and be supplied with endless berber whiskey (mint tea!). And the food is first rate! From a hearty breakfast on the terrace to a delicious tagine at night in the decorative dining room.

A truly amazing experience at Palmaraie guesthouse and one that has given me a true taste of Berber culture.

Great little guest house run by Rachid and Jamal who are also great cooks. Very inexpensive with a terrace for breakfasts and a large traditional dining room with divans and low tables great for a party, especially if travelling in a group. The Palm Grove very tradiitonal and lush, growing broadbeans at this time of year. Later dates and apricots are harvested. Jamal took us for a walk through the Palmeraie exploring abandoned Kasbah on the way to the Todra Gorge with an arranged lift back! We spent 5 days here , touring the region each day and returning to generous meals. We took a day trip to the Sahara with a camel ride on our last day! Continued our holiday with 2 days in Marrakech stopping at Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate on the way.

- I have returned to Palmeraie House a number of times since 2002 and have always found the welcome provided by Doreen , Rachid and Jamal to be warm, helpful and hospitable.I can not speak highly enough of the first-class cuisine, the comfortable rooms and friendly service - reasons why I make regular return visits there.
- Nothing is too much trouble for the staff - they are eager to please and to help/advise about available trips in the local area.
- For the active - Mountain Trekking, Rock Climbing or just exploring the adjacent Palmeraie and Kasbah (which I can recommend) are all activities which I and my fellow guests experienced during our stay at Palmeraie House.
- For the inactive - there is a roof terrace where I spent many a happy hour under the Berber tent relaxing, reading and being supplied with endless cups of mint tea!

We stayed 4 nights in this small berber guesthouse. They offer two kinds of rooms. Three rooms have their own toilet and shower. The four other rooms are down in the berber house, that makes them more cool. These rooms have no own bathroom, but a shared one. As we were the only guests in the guesthouse that was not a problem. We'd choosen the simply rooms, just because of the heat. The lovely and spacious rooms are very clean, and the beds are comfortable. Our kids had their own rooms, just opposite our one. The lower rooms open up to a lovely open air courtyard whith tiled benches. We spend ours relaxing here. Just reading a little bit, or playing a game. We drunk liters of berber whisky (mint tea) which tasted great.
We payed 300 dirhams for a room with half board. The dinner was just unbeleavable! These guys can cook like a four star restaurant cook! We enjoyed every single meal. Here we had the best food of whole Morocco!!!
The rooms upstairs with own bathroom are 400 dirhams per room, and even more comfortable. None of the rooms has airconditioning, but you don't need it actually.
On the roof they have a berber tent, you can have dinner there or just relax.
From the Palmeraie House you can walk directly into the Palmeraie. It's 7 km to Tinerhir, or 7 km to the Todra Gorge to the orther direction. The owners Jamal and Rachid can organise a guide for you if you are afraid to get lost in the palmeraie.
They can also organise a cooking course, if you are intrested in it. Transport or other things can be arranged by the owners. They are glad to help you.
Reservations are handled easily. Both english and french are spoken.
Strongly recommended!

Unique Qualities: The great hospitality was overwhelming. Both owners, Jamal and Rachid are very kind, they like to talk and make jokes. Also for the kids they did the best they could.
They presented games for them, walked with us to a swimming pool and river for a cool dip.
Jamal also made some changes in the food, as our kids are bad eaters.
Therefore I would recommend this lovely guesthouse to anyone going this direction.

  • Liked — great hospitality, delicious food, location in the palmeraie
  • Disliked — everything was just fine
