I can't speak to the quality of other hotels in the area and I tried not to have high expectations of a hotel in Lalibela, Ethiopia. With that said, I will rate Panoramic View Hotel as average.
Room: The view from our room was amazing but sadly, there was a sewage smell that was hard to ignore. You could open a window or patio door but without screen, all types of bugs get inside. it was nice to have a patio to look at the beautiful view but the other shortcomings taint your overall stay. The bathroom was a good size but the smell was overwhelming.
Restaurant: They only offer a set menu at 130 birrs (which does not include the 5% service charge and 15% VAT) with 3 different "main" options, the bottled water prices are ridiculous, and I found hair in my food! You also can't sign your meals to your room - you have to pay cash each time. My husband and I thought that another patron ordered from a different menu than the 130 birr menu we were always offered but we aren't sure. They may have an a la carte menu but the two times I tried to see it, I was unsuccessful.
Service: The hotel advertises that they take Visa and Mastercard but they don't. they say it's "broken" but I don't think they ever intend for you to use credit card. So we had to make an extra trip to town to take cash out from the ATM. Also, when we checked out and got our final bill, the cost of transport to and from the airport was listed as 70 birr per person. This was a surprise to us since the email I received prior to booking only indicated that the cost was 70 birr to transfer to and from the airport - there was no specification that it was per person. When I showed the front desk staff the email, he just said, it's 70 birr per person and refused to change it. Upon check out they also tried to charge me $55USD per night even though when I corresponded via email, the rate was $50USD per night. I had to show him this email to get the $50USD/night rate. Keep your emails handy!
Wifi: It doesn't really work in room at all. We were in room 108 and were able to jump on the restaurant wifi here and there. Otherwise, have to go to the lobby.
Tour services: Upon check in, the owner introduced us to his friend, Kassa, a tour guide. His rate was 400 birr per day. Overall we were pleased with his services but it felt a little pushy right off the bat. We had just arrived, were trying to order and have lunch when Kassa continued to try to talk to us. We had politely asked that he come back after we eat but he seemed anxious to confirm. We confirmed him for 2 days - one day to take us around 6 of 11 churches and the second day for the remainder of the churches and to St. Yimrhane Kirstos - about an hour away from Lalibela (transportation cost 1200 birr on top of the 400 birr for the guide).
Laundry: They charge by the piece here but it was affordable. Underwear/socks - 5 birr; Pants - 6-8 birr; Shorts - 6-8 birr; Shirts - 7 birr.
