“Sterile with fantastic views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 22, 2013

Good points: fab balcony (great for drying clothes) with stunning views, clean bathroom with hot water, comfy room

Bad points: a bit sterile, a bit of a walk from town which can be a bit intimidating after dark (but good for the legs)

Cliff Edge offers a nicely decorated, clean hotel room in Lalibella with a lovely view. We stayed there for 3 nights, two of them after doing some tough highland trekking and it was really comforting to return to this space to relax. The bed was comfy, the balcony is great for hanging out and has a view of the hazy sunset. There was a good hot water shower, and plumbing that works well. After discussion with the kitchen staff, we had a nice injera meal delivered to the room. The internet did not work consistently from the room, but worked very well from the dining room. The staff are helpful, they took care of laundry and stored our baggage as needed.

It's important to say that I have not stayed at any other hotels in Lalibela as I only stayed one night. However I would never stay again at the Cliff Edge. I was assured there was internet but when we arrived, there wasn't any and the management seemed to not care at all. Now I can believe that the internet in that part of the country is transitory but it was the attitude of management that was so disappointing. The only reason I picked the hotel was internet access.
There is no televsion, the hotel food was quite bad and the supposed great views are, well they are okay but not in the league with what I have seen in my travels.
If I were going again to Lalibela, I would try the Top Twelve Hotel next door. It may not be any better, but it cannot be any worse (Full disclosure - I have no financial interests in the Top Twelve).
The stone churches (the main attraction) are worth hiking through although the $100 per person entrance ticket was a bit much considering the 5 or 6 hours needed to see them all. They tried to justify the $100 entrance fee by saying it was good for 5 days however only a pilgrim would need to stay more than one day. Where does all that entrance money go? From what I saw, it does not seem to trickle down. A few people living large and everybody else barely getting by.

It sounds rather repetitive, beautiful view, clean, comfortable rooms, its all that you need. I had read about it on trip advisor before our travels, and it really lives up to the reviews. The dining room is very basic and we ended up having our meals at the highly recommended Ben Abeba Restaurant, just up the road.

I ended up in the hotel by accident having booked the neighbouring hotel, Top Twelve, and finding it over-booked during the Ethiopian Easter weekend. The room was large, simply furnished and a wonderful view down the valley through the French windows and from the large balcony. The beds were good and the bathroom large and modern with good hot shower. WiFi.
Only stayed one night. The staff tried to please. Breakfast was fine although not a very inspiring dining area.
In an area of town that is developing, due to views. About a twenty minute walk to church sites through town.

We stayed at this hotel in October 2012 and I highly recommend it. It's new, very clean, quiet and has a wonderful view. Much better value for money than the more famous one right next to it. Food was good as well, but the restaurant is small - however, the staff do their best to make you feel welcome.

Room Tip: Second floor, if possible - and the balcony faces the beautiful valley.

I stayed here last month and just had to write a review for this great hotel, even though most people who write aTtripadvisor review, just have an axe to grind, I'm writing because I loved this place. Lilebela is a small town set high in the Ethiopian highlands at 2,400m and most of the hotels are placed close together overlooking a magnificent view across a deep valley. This hotel is set apart by the lower price, the excellent and helpful staff, the quality and finish of the building and the very friendly and helpful and well-travelled owner who understands what travellers need....and provides it. There is a restaurant on-site which cooks excellent local dishes. Wi-fi is free and fast for Ethiopia. The view from every room is unbelievable; the sunsets over the valley and distant mountains was a highlight of my month-long visit to Ethiopia. I can highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: All the rooms in the 3 storey building have a view
