“Amazing view and really nice rooms!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I can't adequately describe the beautiful views that are offered by these rooms. In addition, these were the nicest rooms we stayed in on our 2 week trip to Ethiopia. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and seem brand new. The rooms are decorated very nicely. Breakfast was good and the staff was friendly. Lalibela is really a walking town; there are very few vehicles and no taxis. The hotel is a little bit of a walk to the churches, but we didn't mind because the scenery is so gorgeous and we enjoyed talking to the friendly locals as we walked through town.

stayed the second time in the cliff edge with different friends from Europe. Will come again and enjoy the cliff edge in Lalibela! Our tourguide Belaynew Mengesha (ethiopianmiracles.com) recommended the Cliff Edge - and he was right! Great stay, perfect tour!

We visited Lalibela at the end of December 2012. We decided to stay at the Cliff Edge after reading about it being very new, clean and with a good view (in the Bradt Guide). We didn't have a reservation but when we arrived at Lalibela airport we found a rep from Cliff Edge, who called in the booking ahead for us. I think it was €40/45 per night, which was more than we had paid anywhere else in Ethiopia, but it was a treat for our final night. (No bargaining on the airport transfer price by the way, the mini bus transfers are a fixed rate for everyone.)

Indeed the rooms at Cliff Edge were spacious, modern and spotless and with a very comfortable bed. The view was spectacular. The en-suite bathrooms new, clean and best of all worked! The shower was hot and amazing.

The balconies were stunning and a perfect place to watch the sunset/sunrise from. But as someone else had commented, the only thing we found a let down was the lack of service of food/drinks to our rooms. In fact, the dinner selection in the restaurant was very limited (as we found in many places, most of the menu was off), but the chef rustled us up some decent Ethiopian key wot. The hotel was very quiet during our stay, so we wouldn't expect them to maintain a fully stocked kitchen. Breakfast was fine – toast, honey, omelette, coffee.

Solomon the owner came to greet us, was chatty, friendly and well-wishing (as were all the staff to us, despite what some have said). Solomon said he had plans to also build a restaurant on the cliffside – so you could sit somewhere to eat whilst enjoying the view. Personally I would just offer room service instead. It wouldn't get much better than having a decent meal and a steady stream of beers brought to your balcony, while the sun goes down over Lalibela. This would be a 5-out-of-5 score had we experienced that.

After a long trek we had a great room with balcony and the best shower in Ethiopia. The staff were lovely and we were able to relax completely. We had lovely cotton sheets and towels and could have looked at the view all day long. Just don't expect to use your credit card to pay.

I visited Lalibela with Leddet (Christmas). It is extremely busy in the village, but the sights of all the pilgrims make it an unique experience.

Seeing that this is a busy time in Lalibela, we booked ahead and chose the Cliff Edge. Prices were very steep (150 USD/night), as is apparently usual for this time of the year.

The hotel itself is a clean, modern building. The bathrooms were clean and good. The view of the hotel is great, it was really nice sitting on the balcony overlooking the valley. Unfortunately it was not possible to enjoy this with a nice drink or snack, as the restaurant only served breakfast at this time (January 2012, it was recently opened). The restaurant itself was also rather basic. However Mountain View hotel was only a few minutes away and had an excellent outdoor restaurant. We could also use the wifi there as this was not (yet?) present at the Cliff Edge. Another nice alternative place to have a drink and meal was the unique Ben Abebe closeby. This meant that we didn't spend to much time enjoying the views at hotel. A bit of a missed chance for the hotel, a nice bar/restaurant or room service would have been great.

As mentioned, the main sights of Lalibela are a good 15 walk away from the hotel, but the location on the cliff edged was worth the walk.

Our only negative is that we felt a bit ripped off by the owner, Solomon. When staying at the hotel we got the impression that there were very few guests in, so the elevated Christmas prices felt a bit unjustified. This was especially so when our standby seats to leave Lalibela a day earlier (as we planned initially but wasn't possible due to full flights) became available. When we contacted the reception about leaving a day early, this could not be accommodated and were requested to pay the full price for this missed night. Seeing that we paid top dollar for the rooms I would have expected a bit more service to find a workable solution for both parties.

So stay here if you want a clean place to sleep in a nice location, but do not expect a place where you feel welcome and can relax and hang out.

This mid-price hotel is situated on the northern edge of Lalibela: a good 20 minutes walk from the ancient churches but in a quiet location. All rooms have en-suite shower and a balcony with a nice view of the valley. The hotel is very clean, the service is helpful, and the restaurant food (limited choice) is perfectly adequate. Internet access seems only available in the reception area. Recommended.

I stayed at the Cliff edge hotel for 2 nights and I highly recommend it: the room and the bathroom were very clean and comfortable.
The hotel recommended us a tour guide which proved to be exceptional adding value to the whole trip. Well done Cliff edge management!

Room Tip: we stayed on the ground floor because the other rooms were all occupied. the view of the valley was...
