“Perfect Location - Room For Improvement”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2013

This perfectly lakeside situated Hotel provides little sixties-style bungalows, with sixties-interior that can be interpreted as charming or outdated. In any case tidiness of the rooms is not why you are here, it`s because of the stunning scenery of lake tana with it`s amazing wildlife that can be well observed from Ghion`s nice terrasse-cafè. All in all good value, we would like to come again.
One main problem though seems to be guides that are always hanging out there, ready to [--] you into way overpriced tours. Simply stay strong, check the information you're told and always gather several offers to compare them.

The setting is amazing, and it's perfectly located in Bahir Dar. This hotel is coasting on the good reviews of guide books and they bring in enough tourism for them not to bother maintaining their facilities. Their food is very average and over priced. The rooms are pretty dishevelled and some of them have issues with the smell from the toilets. The boat trips organised from the hotel are very over priced - €80 per head, you can find them for half the price is you shop around! It's a pleasant stay but nothing exceptional. The staff are helpful and friendly. The hotel has wifi but you will struggle to find a slot to use it as everyone from around town comes here to use it. We were informed of a change in management that may account for the incongruence with the guide reviews.

Lovely little place in Bahir Dar. For max. 300 BIRR (€12) you get a fairly decent room: it was spacious, a little worn out but clean. We had a working tv, the WIFI worked but was very slow at times (it seems to work the best early in the morning for us). The shower worked poorly, but was enough to freshen up in the morning and there was hot water. We slept well as the bed was fairly comfy.

We loved the setting, you do not get the feeling being so close to the center (which is a 5 to 10 minute walk). It's right beside Lake Tana, which perhaps isn't the most beautiful lake you'll ever see, but it carries a certain ease and peace (which we still loved). The garden is beautiful to wake up in. If you want to go the Blue Nile Falls, it can be arranged from the hotel for 250 BIRR per person.

As for the food at the hotel... for the same price you can get a bit better food a little down the road. It wasn't horrible, but you can definitely get a lot better for the same price. There were a lot of things on the menu they didn't have. Breakfast menu is quite good, on the other hand. It's also a nice hotel to get in touch with other travellers. There are mosquito nets available, although we used our own. Staff is generally quite friendly.

Overal I do not have many complaints. I would likely stay again if I ever had to come to Bahir Dar again.

Rooms ar so old and moldy. And the price range is 250-300 birr for one night. Not worth the stay. The only plus is that you are on the lake shore.
The restaurant isn't the best, and they are greedy they charge for an extra injera !!! Can u blive that!!

Decent and big rooms, beautiful garden and terrace. Convinient place abd goid location. They organice tours to the lake and to the raifalls. Worth it, overall.

As everywhere in Ehiopia, bargain prices.

I stayed in the Ghion 10 years ago and before several times. Nothing has been touched and the buildings are slowly decaying into oblivion. Having said that this hotel has many pluses. The room was quite adequate and secure, and the shower hot and generous. The location is perfect for the short stroll into the city centre, or take a tuk tuk. Boat trips to the monasteries and the falls are readily organised, and Bisrat will cut you a fair deal. Beware his father who interferes and provokes arguments, but Bisrat rules. The gardens are a delight, as are the lakeshore views, the only downside being that it used to be better - 7 years ago thecity put a large public path along the waterfront, so where once you had water lapping at your table as you sipped bunna, now you have a steady stram of people, and this has greatly reduced the prolific birdlife there used to be. The food is a little dubious but alternatives like the next door Kuriftu resort suffice. All in all, good location, good for tours, and value for money (300 birr).

The hotel is very peaceful, the gardens are beautiful, and the hotel provides activities from the hotel location. I loved the boat rides from the hotel to the churches on some of the small islands surrounding bahar dar. The food at the hotel was good.
