“Interesting half day tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

The lake is very large and we only had time to visit three monasteries. The guides didn't tell us about the 100 Birr ($6) fee per person that each monastery charges so make sure you take enough local cash.

Definitely worth seeing but after the first two, had seen enough.

“One of the best things to do in Ethiopia”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2012

My visit to the Lake Tana and it's monasteries was doubtless a highlight! I loved the lake, the churches, the Blue Nile Falls and even saw hippopotamuses!
The landscapes are great and there are some good hotels where you can relax and drink and eat. And reading about Ethiopia's hystory there is a pleassure!

“Third Largest Lake in Africa”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2012

The blue on maps is deceptive- Lake Tana is huge and brown and the shoreline is sadly debris strewn. The monasteries are interesting however, but it is worth the time to see those a bit further from shore. Hard to imagine a contemplative atmosphere with boatloads of tourists traipsing through regularly. The hippos were a highlight at the mouth of the Blue Nile however. We had a charming guide named Tadiz whose phone contact is 0918133555 and whose e mail is tadez258@yahoo.com. While he did not have the speediest boat on the lake, we enjoyed the entire experience and his company and recommend him without reservation.

“Monasteries are spread out.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

It look us half a day to visit two monasteries. Pleasant boat ride on an seemingly empty lake. Probably should have brought a picnic lunch and stayed out longer or had a faster boat if that is possible. The two monasteries we saw seemed heavily restored but interesting after reading The Sign and the Seal. Almost no other tourist in sight which was lovely.

“Gorgeous day on the Lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2012

Although out boat driver wasn't the greatest we still enjoyed our trip on the lake as it was a beautiful day, and we got to see hippos! Although we paid to see several monastries we actually only saw one as we were rushed from one place to the next so that the driver could make another job in the afternoon. He also asked for extra money for petrol even though we already paid Birr 800! Take it with a grain of salt and don't let it ruin the experience.
