“Better than expected”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2014

We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of this hotel room, given the negative reviews we had read. The staff couldn't find our booking, but were helpful and able to accommodate us during a busy period. Our room was comfortable and spacious and the restaurant was okay. Internet was good and we would stay there again.

Having stayed previously and not enjoyed our stay I said we would not return however we did and I am pleased to say our experience was better
We found the staff ALL the hotel staff helpful and polite, especially on reception and in the restaurant.
A very special mention must go to the hotel staff who found my wallet and phone in the safe before I realised I had left them there. They made immediate contact and they were safely returned to me in time for me to catch the flight out

We booked the hotel based on the limited choice in Aksum. We realised that we were paying a high price by Ethiopian standards but as we were only staying two nights we treated ourselves to an executive room as we knew that we would be spending some time hanging out at the hotel. In communications with the hotel we were told about the free airport shuttle, so we requested a pick-up after our early flight. The person who met us took us to a waiting minibus and then talked at us all the way to the hotel, as it turned out he was actually a guide. On arrival at the hotel there seemed to be a struggle between the guide, driver and porter over who was going to take our bags in. It was a slightly uncomfortable start. On arrival into our room we found that it was clean, spacious, with lots of windows and a nice seating area, there was also a TV, safe and a fan. We were pleased with it but then realised that not all of the lamps/lights and sockets worked and the very fancy shower was mainly for show. The worst thing in the room though was the bed. We were used to firm beds having travelled a lot but this was the hardest by far. We ended up sleeping on top of the duvet. The breakfast service was from 6-10 which was good. We had breakfast on two mornings, the first time it was a buffet which had a really nice choice but the second morning we had to place an order and had a long wait. The lobby area always had a crowd of guides and touts hanging around and we were pestered on a couple of occasions, the reception staff seemed to just accept it. When we asked about the shuttle back to the airport a receptionist who was on the desk at the time said that there wasn't one but if we gave her 100-150 birr she would arrange transport for us. When I tried to clarify whether she meant that we would pay the hotel she lowered her voice and said that the arrangement would be with her. We ended up arranging a taxi through another member of staff and paying the taxi direct as the shuttle bus was actually not available. We just felt like the guides and touts had taken over the hotel. Considering the price we paid we expected a much better experience. The hotel aspires to be a modern business/leisure hotel but it does not deliver. A final point which sums it up is that there was a shoe shine machine in the hallway which was a welcome sight but then we realised that there wasn't a plug socket anywhere nearby.....

We had a one might stay in Aksum, enjoyed the hot showers, the comfy bed, and the standard breakfast. Nothing stands out about this hotel, except as a good place to sit outside and watch the world go by.

It is clean and new and has comfortable beds. The shower pressure is low, and the hot water won't last through two showers (each room has a small tank?!?). Staff was efficient. Wifi was reliable, not only in the lobby, something lacking at most hotels we have stayed at in Ethiopia.

Room Tip: The suites are reasonable but face the main road so there is a fair amount of noise.

I give this hotel a 4 star rating based on other hotels we experienced throughout Ethiopia. It is a modern hotel with generic average size rooms. The shower was decent but the beds, like most we slept in are pretty hard. A major bonus was the provision of a fan for the room. This was the only hotel we stayed in with a fan, so elsewhere we either had to open the windows and get bitten by bugs or boil! The food was reasonable as was the service, albeit a little slow.

This is a quite new hotel so everything is clean and pretty much works.
The rooms are fine but they have really tried to put in too much (Chinese made) furniture so there is very little room for suitcases or to move around.
Bathroom was clean and the room also has a safe and mini bar.
Food was OK but not great and breakfast was the usual toast and jam or scrambled egg.
Laundry service was excellent.
Staff could do with a bit more training.
There is a brand new ATM just outside the hotel that also exchanges Dollars Euros and Sterling.
Reception and bar area is busy: largely with locals but this isn't a problem; wifi is good.
A decent hotel in Axum.

Room Tip: Matbe try for a larger room: they do have a higher standard of room
