We visited Fort William Henry in July 2012. I recall it being reasonably pricey, and the weather was absolutely scorching. We knew it was a replica, and were not disappointed on that score; the free-ranging part of the tour was interesting atmospheric, though some of the waxworks looked a bit tired. We had an excellent pair of guides, in full uniform despite the heat; live explanation of grenadier drill with some entertaining banter, artillery, musketry.
I note the interesting comments about the place looking a bit run down, but that just added to the atmosphere for me. Don't forget it was a log fort, not expected to last all that long, and indeed it didn't when the French had finished with it. This is how it might have looked if it had stood for a while, and unless it's built fresh every year it will continue to look this way. If you want a really run down fort, try Fort Necessity...
Anyway, we had fun and spent enough time here that we felt we had our money's worth. And the views over the Lake are gorgeous.

We are in the process of replacing many of the logs which are showing their age. It is an ongoing process as they naturally decay plus we experienced a lot of damage during a bad hail storm this spring. Unfortunately, when we come to the end of the project, it’s usually time to start all over again!!
We have started working to improve our exhibits by turning over the care of the artifacts and display areas to a not-for-profit group made up of historians, archaeologists and other volunteers. They introduced a couple of new displays this past year and this process will continue. The old mannequins which are from the 1960s will slowly be replaced as displays are updated and made more interactive.
Thank you for your kind comments regarding our guide staff who work very hard in all kinds of weather to provide an interesting tour. We hope you will visit us again as we continue to make improvements.
