“Epic Short Hike in ADKs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

My favorite short hike in the ADKs. Only a 1/2 mile hike along a slow mountain stream to spectacular falls. Follow the trail another 1/2 mile down to Lake George for great swimming out to the islands. Google the photos of the falls.

“great nature hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

Have hiked these trails for years...always a good time. Lots of trails from easy to moderate with great scenery. More and more people seen on the trails over the last few years.

“Scenic venue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

Access is a bit tricky. By boat in the summer it is a snap. If you are walking it is a long hike . Folks in shape should have no problem. For the summer season this is a great place to get wet.

“Quick trip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2011

I was hoping this hike would offer a little more trail and/or direction. The waterfall is very accessible but if you don't catch it at the right time it is tough to get a good picture. Though it is beautiful to the naked eye any time of day I'm sure. After you get the falls, the trail kind of goes away. There are a couple foot paths that take you along the stream to the lake, but then the only option you're left with is to walk the herd path along the lake. Gorgeous, just not a hike per se. All in all, if you're looking for a quick burst of nature with a bonus waterfall, this is the walk for you. Walk, not hike!

“Beautiful Shelving Rock Falls, a nature lovers wonderland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 6, 2004

I grew up in the area and return frequently to visit family, friends and of cousre Shelving Rock Falls. There two easy ways to get to the falls. First by car, take State Road 149 and head east to Buttermilk Falls Road it will be on your left. Just stay on the main road until drive over a small river (it is a about a 20 minute drive). You can park at the top of the hill on the other side of the river. There is a trail that follows the the river down stream. Follow it until you come to falls.

Second by boat, first find out where Log Bay is on Lake George. Once you get there anchor your boat and swim to land. Do not forget your sandles or shoes the hike is short but steep and rocky. There is a trail that follows the shoreline, finding it will not be hard. Just walk towards the river that is flowing into Lake George and look for a trail that is heading up the hill. Stay on the trail until see Shelving Rock Falls. My favorite way to the falls is by boat and instead of taking the trail I hike the river. It is cool and refreshing. There are many smaller falls and pools to sit under and in to relax.
