“Clean Towels, Please”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2005

I booked this hotel before reading Trip Advisor's reviews. After reading them, I was nervous about showing up late at night and having no alternatives since it was Parent Weekend at nearby New Paltz College and there seemed to be no rooms anywhere else.
When we arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find a simple, basic motel room next to a nice restaurant. It was convenient to the Thruway and suited our purposes for the weekend.
My main complaint is that we got no maid service...no clean towels even though the mandatory stay was a two-night minimum. We really didn't mind making our own beds, but my mother and my daughter and I all shared one set of towels for the two days we were there!
Granted, the price of this motel was comparatively cheap ($95/night) but I really thought part of that was for clean towels and made up beds! We would stay here again (partly for the great brunch buffet next door,) but would insist on maid service and clean towels next time.

Three generations, two days, two bath towels

Moldy, Smelly rooms, smelly water, everything falling apart, this is as bad as a skid-row flophouse.

Too bad, it would be a nice place if it was run by a professional chain, it's in a nice location, but the owner is trying to run it as a mom-n-pop operation and he's in way over his head. He'll squeeze the last dime out of it before it becomes an abandoned dilapidated relic, I suppose.

I went through Hotel.com to book to nights at the Sky Top Motel. The Hotel web site described a "Victorian ambience, panoramic views of the Catskill, impressive pool, lawn games, old-fashioned swings and a beautiful gazebo round out the picture".Here's the truth: Victorian ambience - typical rundown hotel furniture in the lobby and rooms panoramic views of the Catskill - no view, it's choked with weeds and trees impressive pool - a 1/4 full of algae and green scum - my kids looked at me with amazement lawn games - does that include the folks drinking beer outside their room around a hibachi? old-fashioned swings and a beautiful gazebo - they are there, full of old TV sets!!!Besides all this, the rooms were dank, and smelled of disinfectant, the mattresses were old and lumpy, the dead mice in the parking lot were a nice touch and the management was completely unresponsive to our complaints about the all of above. Suffice to say we booked at a nearby Best Western (wow what a difference) and we were billed one nights stay by Hotels who while guaranteeing "Best Places" and satisfaction fell far short after numerous phone calls. I will never use Hotels again nor suggest to friends. A wholly miserable experience.......p.s. I asked that Hotels to review the false advertisement on their web site, 6 months later still the same information about this dump!

Over a week before our arrival date, we made a reservation (guaranteed by our credit card) for this motel. Upon arrival, the woman at the registration desk (after looking at her registration log and several different piles of paper) told us she couldn't find our registration and that there were no rooms available. I tried to show her our printed page showing both my name (in case she had misheard it) and our Expedia guaranteed reservation, but she refused to look at it and insisted that Expedia had never sent our reservation information to them. She also said that the motel would not charge us the one night's no-show fee for reservations not canceled before 4pm.

To find out who dropped the ball, we then went off and called Expedia, who verified that the motel had indeed received our information and sent back a confirmed registration number. Scott at Expedia was very helpful.

Again we went back to the hotel and told her that Expedia had refuted her story, at which point she pointed to a stack of printouts and said that if we had a reservation through Expedia that a printout showing our reservation would show up somewhere in that stack.

I looked over at the stack and saw A RESERVATION FORM WITH MY NAME ON IT ON TOP OF THE PILE!!!! MY RESERVATION WAS THERE ALL ALONG!!!! I pointed this out and she then tried to shift the blame to another motel employee! How could they have missed that and turned away paying customers? Worse, as "no-shows", we would have ended up being charged for a stay in a room we'd been told was unavailable!!!

After this snafu, we did get our room after all. The room was reasonably clean, which is why we are not assigning the worst rating here. The written admonition on the wall that the bedspreads and pillow shams were decorative only, *not washed*, and not intended for use was a bit odd, however. There was not a working deadbolt or chain on the door (which opened to the outside), only a doorknob-mounted lock.

The hotel is apparently under new management, which may explain our mistreatment. Maybe in the future they will be better about carefully checking the registration information before turning people away.

Do not stay here unless you have a backup plan for a place to stay !!!
