“Great breakfast- but where are the owners?”

Trail's End Inn

Jan 27, 2008

This inn is like home- homemade breakfast in the morning, cookies waiting in the hall after a long day of hiking. Beautiful rustic architecture, fireplace in the eating area...

I'm not sure we ever saw the owners, though, except for breakfast. A little strange, being a B&B and all.

Excellent location, isolated from the touristy stuff, surrounded by beautiful grounds, deer coming close during breakfast...

Simple rooms, clean. Paper thin walls, but it is a very old establishment. I hear the private bathrooms are beautiful, perhaps will get those next time... We took a simple room with shared bath.

Overall, great place.

We stayed at Trails End this October. The setting of the inn is beautiful . My 5 year old LOVED the optional sleeping porch we had in our room.. Breakfast was excellent was served a quiche and freshly baked muffins etc..The inn is a little rough in that the bathroom was in the middle of a remodel and supplies on the floor..The Inn was very impersonal as this is our first BED and Breakfast experience in that we had NO CONTACT with innkeepers as they were no where in sight ! We prepaid so I guess that is how it is operated just left you fealing a little neglected :) ..

The good: Spacious room, comfortable beds, nicely decorated, excellent breakfasts.
The bad: Poor room lighting, no air conditioning (a problem in hot humid weather when 2 of us are asthmatic), wall paint in room is worn away in places, toilet and sink area is cramped.
The in-between: Cleaner than my house; not as clean as my mother's or mother in law's.

For a B&B, the Trail's End was not homey and hospitable. The server at breakfast was pleasant, otherwise we never saw the staff. The owners were only available if telephoned or called via doorbell, so we never met them (two-day stay). We saw them walking their dogs, but they didn't speak to us. There was no one to tell about a burned out light bulb or from whom to request a fan. No one ever inquired about our satisfaction.
While I don't need my hand held, the reason I choose B&Bs over hotels is the connection with my hosts and the feeling of being 'at home.'

If you are interested in spending time in the mountains and all you need is a place to sleep, the Trail's End would suit you perfectly.
If your main goal is to be a bit removed from Lake Placid, but still nearby, this location is too far, especially at night: 25 minutes down a windy road.

This is an open and welcoming place that does NOT overpower you with frills. It's basic, somewhat rustic and very comfortable. The rooms are just that, rooms. It reminds me of the cabin we used to stay at when I was young.

The breakfast was very good. Most guests were recovering from being out all day hiking or traveling so the morning was thankfully quiet.

My husband and I first stayed at The Trail's End Inn in Keene NY for our honeymoon. We married in Lake Placid and wanted someplace nearby that would give us a romantic Adirondack retreat. After alot of research, we decided to stay at Trails End and loved it so much that we've been back twice for anniversary stays.

I highly recommend the rooms with king beds, fireplace and jacuzzi tubs. We've stayed in both on the second floor. After a fall Adirondack romp in the forest a real wood fire sets the mood for romance and the double jacuzzi tub in a gorgeous tiled bathroom is stocked with bath oils, candles, etc. You can order special packages and your room will be stocked with fruit and cheese, champagne, whatever you want.

This property is a destination for hikers and backbackers and sports enthusiasts of all varieties. The hearty breakfast should not be missed. Homemade waffles, fresh breads and muffins, juices and coffee...yumm! They will pack a box lunch for you if the surrounding trails beckon for a day hike, bike, ski.

I cannot wait to go back!
