Stayed twice at this hotel (oct 2008 and march 2009). It was cheaper than other hotels, the Indian staff was pretty friendly and spoke a good English.
The rooms are confortable, the view is not too pleasant and nights can be pretty noisy, depending on which side of the building the room is.
Being close to the subway is one of the most important things when booking the hotel (because NY is so big), and Ramada has the advantage of being close to 2 magistrals. You can get to Time Square in 30 minutes without changing the subway line. The subway can get you back at the hotel even after 12:00 o'clock in the night (another big advantage).
PROs: cheap room compared to other hotels, subway was within short distance (you can get to Time Square without changing), there are some little shops with food around.
Breakfast included in the room price.
The staff was helpful (we checked out of the room at 10 and asked the staff to look after the luggage until 16, which they did without taking money). They also called us taxis in order to get in time to the airport.
CONs: there's no shuttle to take you from the airport. in order to get to the hotel, you can take a bus from the airport - you must have 1 $ COINS (people at the airport can exchange money). Be sure you have a map of the airport in case you wanna take this bus, it's easy to get lost.
The area around the hotel didn't seem very safe. It's a black people neighbourhood. I'm not prejudiced, it's just that we attracted a lot of attention with our white skin and it wasn't all pleasant attention (we were the only white people in the bus to the hotel).
There were a lot of police announcements, looking for people that robbed places. At night, there were a lot of police sirens. Compared to Sunnyvale, California, this part of NY seemed a bit dangerous, although I walked (actually run) at 1 o'clock in the night and nothing happened to me.
This 3* was cheaper than most other 3* hotels and it had easier access to the center of NY, so I recommend it to people short of money who are not afraid of some thrills (young people, mainly). After all, what's a visit to NY without some thrills?
