“Great deep dish pizza”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2012

Possibly the best pizza in Ithaca if you like deep-dish, definitely one of the best deep-dishes I've ever had. I've heard that the wings are also very good, but I've never had them. I also can't really comment on the regular service, because I avoid the restaurant when it is packed with college students and have only gone during breaks when the service was always fast.

“Still the best pizza in town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2012

I don't know how a place can still make the same outstanding pizza for 30 years, but they have. As good as I remember it it and still maintains that college town vibe

“College Bar”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012 via mobile

Alright pizza, it's just a college bar. Good place to go for a beer.

“The Nines Pizza is part of the Ithaca experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2011

The Nines round pizzas are about average for Ithaca and OK for groups, but it's the deep dish that keeps people coming back again.

Yes the service is slow, because it's made to order, the place is packed on weekend nights and they are also delivering pizzas from the same kitchen. Even on a slow night, expect a minimum 25-30 minutes on a deep dish pizza. On a busy night, an hour wait is about par provided you are early enough to avoid the delivery peak times.

The waitstaff is almost entirely college students and behind the bar are long term staff. Kids love to watch the food magically come down the dumbwaiter and there can often be a family crowd on weekends.

There's live music a few nights a week with an open mic Sunday each week and a Monday night Blues night. Tuesday is trivia night, starting at 10PM.

Aside from pizza, salads are popular-- Spinach Salad has ample amounts of bacon on it.

The Nines fries are lightly seasoned waffle-cut sold by the half pound or full pound basket. The wings are large enough to share and the BBQ is zingy without being over sweet.

But it's the deep dish pizza that is their signature dish. They don't skimp on the toppings: a single deep dish pepperoni slice will have 9 slices of pepperoni and each full pie uses a pound of cheese. Each slice is about 6" x 7" -- the crust is just under an inch thick and slightly sweet. One slice is enough to satisfy most folks, but if you are a big eater you may want to split an order of wings or corn nuggets as an appetizer. You can order a full deep dish for four and customize each slice, which is also a plus.

If you are in a large group, the Nines is about the only place to go in Collegetown. They often have tables of 6-8 as walk-ins and they are constantly shuffling tables around to prepare for larger parties. Parties of 12-30 are typically seated between the bar and stage area.

In all, the Nines has a good environment for a college town pizza bar. It's was once a fire station(hence the name) and the brick walls and hardwood floors add to it's homey, somewhat funky atmosphere. Their main market is for the college kids, but they are family friendly.

“Very good pizza, man.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

So the pizza...tons of cheese, tons of dough. These are the crown jewels of the pizza here - the toppings are rather pedestrian. That's not a bad thing, mind you - you're just not getting fresh cut mozza or applewood pepper bacon here, that's all.

It's far and away the best pizza for carnivores in Ithaca (Pizza Aroma is probably a better option for vegetarians). Go for the deep dish, by the way - the traditional crust is entirely unremarkable here.

They have a pretty solid selection of beers, which is nice. You'll need that booze too, because the wait is insanely long. Granted, I'd rather wait a long time for fresh and hot food than get cold or rewarmed food quickly (I'm looking at you, Mama T's) but on a busy night with a large (6+ people) party you're looking at no less than a one-hour wait.

If they delivered, they'd probably drive two-thirds of the pizza houses in Ithaca out of business. But they don't, so...yeah. 4 out of 5 - best in Ithaca, but slow service and a rather timid, homely dine-in ambience. The open mic and live bands are nice, though.
