“Cool guest house - far exceeded our expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2011

We were a group of five, and had a great stay in the Gallery Suite. Initially, there were just four of us, and I booked the 2-bedroom Thunderbird Suite, which looked great on the website. So when a fifth guest decided to join us, I was a bit sorry to switch to the more traditional looking 3-bedroom Gallery Suite. But it far exceeded all of our expectations. First, it is huge - we kept discovering extra rooms, like the little study and the enclosed sunporch. It was extremely comfortable. The "kitchenette" is really an eat-in kitchen, except with a toaster oven and microwave rather than an actual stove or oven. It was great for breakfast. And the furnishings and design of the "suite" (really more like your own private apartment) was a cool mix of traditional, modern and quirky.

The owner (or whoever did the interiors here) has a great eye for design. The design of the check-in lobby and 2nd floor lounge really showcase the bones of this old house in an interesting way. Be sure to have a look. The second floor lounge has an "honor bar" which is a great idea, and would be a great place to hang out. Not that we needed space to hang out, what with the multiple, spacious rooms in our suite.

This Guest House provided an incredibly comfortable place for a group, but I would love to come back and stay in one of the smaller suites, too. It's extremely convenient (walkable) to the many restaurants and interesting shops of Warren Street. Hudson is a great town for interesting historical architecture - I even stole a peek through the windows of the tiny Quaker Meeting House next door to the Guest House.

Our suite had everything we could want, and was very clean, with comfortable beds, great down comforters, nice towels, dishes, etc. (The down comforters did come in handy, since the weather had just started to turn cold at night.) They do not serve breakfast here, but we often book holiday apartments when we travel and really enjoy the space, comfort, and independence they offer. We were delighted to find that at this Guest House. Chris, the owner, was pleasant, and his two dogs very sweet. Thumbs up!

We have stayed a night in the Library Suite in the Union Street Guest House. You need to be able to pass two lovely dogs in order to check in, Chris is a very nice guy, and the Library Suite more feels like a place you can live for an extended period than a hotel (which it isn't :-)). Very close to Warren Street, where everything happens in Hudson, so all over we're extremely pleased and great value for money!

Great inn - we stayed in the 2br suite. Great collection of vintage finds, comfortable, right near the center of town and Warren St. shopping. Wish I could have sat on the porch or garden and read all of the magazines they left for us in the room.

We had a nice stay at the guest house. The host Chris was extremely nice and helpful. We discovered that we share a passion for restoration hardware! The room we stayed in was enormous and the rate extremely reasonable. Were impressed by the attention to detail in the rooms (aveda products, Lacoste towels, etc.). Will definitely recommend it.

The day before we were to arrive, Hurricane Irene caused extraordinary disruption. New York announced plans to shut down its entire network of tranportation for the first time, highways and Amtrak were shut down and the President declared a state of emergency for NY state. I sent an email to the hotel (because they did not answer the phone the four times I called and they request to be contact via email, not phone, on their website) asking if the hotel would be open and if they could provide a safe envirinment, as we did not want to arrive to find the hotel closed or unsafe. I got no reply for 19 hours, at which point all forms of transportation were shut down and it was literally impossible for us to get there. We had no option but to cancel our plans, at which point they still charged us full price for the stay. Additionally, they claimed as part of why they would not reimburse us that they merely "expect some winds on Sunday afternoon only" when it is extremely well documented that FEMA declared a state-wide state of emergency and that the transportaion shut down in NY State was of historic proportions.

The problem is that this person did not actually have a reservation here. Apparently she chose to come with a friend who had a reservation and that person was in contact with us and understood our policy regarding weather issues. We respond to guests who are arrving with actual reservations first particuarly when we are dealing with a sold out weekend. (she never even mentioned her frineds name or her reservation in her email asking about the weather). This reviewer was never charged anything from us because she never booked a room here. If she was charged it was from her friend. We had no other problems that weekend.... everyone showed up and the weather here was not that bad. Weather and travel are not something we can control and therefore we make it clear that it is not a reason to cancel within our policy.

This stylish and historic building is a great place to tour the historic town of Hudson and the surrounding valley. I like the synthesis of an old structure with modern furnishings and comfortable linens and bedding.

I like everything about this place...except it does not offer breakfast of any sort. However, several good breakfast places are available within a 10 minute walk fromt this place...as long as you wait till 8 or 9am.

Highly recommended!

Newly retired we decided to move to Hudson NY after visiting friends in the area. We were looking for a place to stay in Hudson for house hunting that was economical, clean, centrally located and would allow our 7 pound cockapoo to accompany us. Union St. Guest House fit the bill and gave us much more than our wish list. They readily accepted our well-behaved dog and we booked 2 nights to begin our house hunting. When we arrived, we gratefully learned that our suite was upgraded from the Tree Tops Suite to the Thunderbirds suite. OMG! The “room” contained two separate bedroom suites with spacious bathrooms and the living room kitchenette area was marvelous with great views. The amenities were fabulous as well: three flat panel screen TVs with cable, stereo system, full size refrigerator, local teas and coffee with brewers for both, dishes, silverware, plentiful towels, pillows and blankets. That’s the simple list but the best thing about Union St Guest House is ever-helpful Chris, and what he has done with the establishment. Restoring the space to its original glory would be incorrect. He has improved on the setting by furnishing each space with premium fixtures (Kohler throughout), newly painted walls including exposed brick and new flooring with interesting colors and textures and art pieces in every room. It was like being in a gallery with all kinds of artists represented. We will visit Union St Guest House often, as we look further for just the right house. You can’t go wrong.
