usband and i like to get out of NYC for our anniversary, and chose hudson for our anniversary trip upon a friend's recommendation. i knew nothing about the town other than it was small & cute, but was left to my own devices in terms of lodging & restaurant recommendations. i'm a researcher and use tripadvisor quite a lot...and was thoroughly impressed by the reviews that the croff house received. after staying at russ & duncan's beautiful b&b for the weekend, i can now attest to all of the wonderful comments and reviews that led me to the croff house in the first place.
russ & duncan are excellent hosts. from the moment we walked in they made us feel welcome, at ease, and "on vacation." russ gave us a short tour of the house, showed us a map of the area, and gave us a rundown of the restaurants they did and did not recommend (i really appreciated the note on what to avoid...he was quite honest about it). while that was happening, duncan whisked our suitcase up to our room. after our orientation to the house and the town, we went up to our room and were very pleased with what we walked into: modern yet homey furniture, wonderful amenities (including a flat screen tv with dish network & apple tv and lots of complementary toiletries), and a beautiful modern bathroom all enclosed in a charming, reasonably-sized room with original details. you can tell that russ & duncan went to great lengths to preserve the feel of the old house while making guests feel comfortable.
the breakfast, which is served between 9am-10am, was really excellent both mornings we got to enjoy it. breakfast always has 3 courses: a baked good, a fruit dish, and the main entree. during our stay, we had:
1st morning: pumpkin cream cheese muffins, spiced baked apple with a caramel crumble over yogurt, and huevos rancheros on a buttermilk biscuit with fresh tomato salsa, cajun potatoes, & bacon.
2nd morning: chili cheese muffins, fresh pineapple and crystalized ginger over yogurt, and cinnamon sour cream waffles with fresh fruit compote, maple whipped cream, and sausage.
my husband and i both consider ourselves foodies and these breakfasts were impressive and satisfying. both days we didn't stuff ourselves but also didn't need to eat lunch.
the croff house also provided turndown service every night. our first night we came back to our room after a wonderful dinner (at helsinki hudson) to find our bed turned down and a cute pumpkin candle with matches, and a note indicating that we could light the candle in our room and then take it with us when we leave. side note: these candles are made by r&d themselves! it was a very nice touch.
speaking of candles, russ & duncan not only make their own candles, jam, pickled veggies, and pasta sauces, but they have them available for sale as well. we purchased the jam "taster pack" which includes 5 small jams of different flavors. we also bought some pickled summer squash and another candle. what we've had the chance to taste so far has been delightful!
lastly, my husband and i took the train from NYC to husdon and were worried about having to carry our luggage in the rain to the train station. we asked russ & duncan about cabs, and they were so sweet to offer to drive us to the train station themselves. we ended up not needing their services as the rain never came that afternoon, but we very much appreciated the gesture.
one final note: russ & duncan do live next door and so even thought you don't have front desk service 24/7, they do make themselves available and tell you how to contact them should you need anything at any time.
i could go on and on about our great experience here but those are the basics. if you have any questions, please feel free to message me. bottom line is that the croff house is a lovely, relaxing, comfortable place to stay. there is a reason this place gets so many stellar reviews and is rated #1 in hudson. i doubt i would stay anywhere else in hudson as the bar as just been set too high. the only exception to my last statement would be the opportunity to stay in the barlow, russ & duncan's new hotel venture that i believe they plan to open sometime in late 2013. it won't be a b&b, but i am certain it will have all the attention to detail that the croff house has.
p.s. in terms of restaurants/bars i would recommend spotty dog books & ale, helsinki hudson, swoon kitchenbar, crimson sparrow, and p.m. wine bar.
didn't have the opportunity to see any of the other rooms, but the peck room is recommended.
