Avoid, avoid, avoid!! Aside from being very expensive for Malawi - yes it is cheaper than the most popular Backpackers spot in Nkhata Bay but their biggest dorms have 8 beds not 16 and there are cheaper Backpackers than both of these places. This place is horrendous.
I had been warned not to stay here but as it was only for one night and close to the ferry terminal I thought I would give it a go anyway. The place is in a general state of disrepair but again as it was only for one night I thought it would be OK. However what I hadn't expected was rats in the room. When I spoke to the Manager, she swung from telling me she understood why I wasn't very happy about this to being verbally abusive "this is Africa what do you white people expect, you come here because you want somewhere pretty with nice water but this is what you get; rats just run around they don't bite people" to "sorry I am a bit drunk, you have lovely eyes". Clearly she has never heard of rat bite fever. As for this is Africa, I've been in Africa for three months, it isn't my first time here and what I expect is somewhere decent to sleep without rodents. Add to this experience loud music, rooms that don't lock properly and fighting dogs. I suggest you stay somewhere else. I was the first person to check in here for 9 days which in a busy Backpacker town says everything about this place. There are alternatives, the walk up the hill to Butterfly Space or even Mayoka (if you like that sort of place) is worth it.
