Big Blue is a SUPER chill place to stop by when you come to Nkhata Bay and I highly recommend it. I came here and was going to stay for one night before going back to Butterfly (which is a great place too in its own way) where I stayed before. That one night turned into me staying for over 2 weeks here ... All the different backpackers in Nkhata Bay have their own bad points but they all have some very great points. The top things I like about this place are

- how relaxed the atmosphere here is and with Sarah and her staff all being so nice and helpful its amazing

- the nice, quick and easy access into town AND the best of all ... no having to deal with the Beach Boys (touts) EVERYTIME you walk to town

- Its the cheapest place to stay unless you want to go to a rest house

- When there is a full moon the view from the bar or deck is spectacular!

- the deck in itself is spectacular

- They have FREE Wifi and even if you dont own a computer there are always other travelers here to lend you theirs.

In regard to the toilets being unclean ... that's quite untrue, I mean its not the Ritz Carleton with sparkling white porcelain ... there are some permanent stains on the bowl but they definitely get cleaned frequently, have functioning plumbing and are well stocked with TP. Its Africa and these toilets are nothing to complain about ... I got quite sick for about 4 days and used them extensively and was very happy they weren't the toilets I am used to getting in Africa.

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: Room 2 ... while it leans a little ... it creates a funhouse style door and has great views

The place is simply not clean. There shared toilets looked like they've never been cleaned. The room is simply, which is fine, but for the same price you can get a clean ensuite room at another lodge in Nkhata Bay. Just not worth it!

The hosel is not too bad but we didn't like the way the owner (or girl in charge) was treating the staff. She was yelling all the time at them. We spent only two nights because of this and we noticed that are better places to stay: more friendly, more beautiful and better located on the lake.

Really and truly the best value for money , closest to town , with the best food in town and beautiful views . A place you really get stuck in a while a way a day , a week or more just chilling swimming and enjoying the nice vibe with the really friendly staff . Make use of the FREE wifi on all day and night . There is also free use of a dug out canoe , snorkels and tv room , Thank to sarah and all the staff i will be back soon xxx

Room Tip: Room 4 is the best !!!

Just on the edge of down over looking lake Malawi. The huts are on pillars over the water. Good food and a nice bar. Really good place to meet other travellers.

My husband and I stayed in a waterside chalet here. It was quite a distance from the shared restrooms but had beautiful views, with a porch overlooking Lake Malawi. The rooms themselves were simple, although we had several bugs join us throughout the day and evening due to the wide cracks between the boards of the chalet. The bathrooms almost always had hot water, which was nice. The restaurant service was always slow, leading us to generally eat out because you could wait over an hour to get your food after you ordered. There was a nice book exchange and a shared TV room. Overall, a good value with beautiful scenery.
