“Great people and nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2012

We have stayed at Dunes a few times now and have always been happy there, but the staff have made it a great place to stay. JJ is a lovely person who will take very good care of you during your stay (she even carried me to bed one night after a bit too much to drink). Mumin the pool boy cannot do enough for you and now has his own taxi also, so you can arrange tours, airport pickups and general taxi journeys through him. With Mumins permission he has asked me to put his telephone number should anybody want to pre arrange anything with him. Its [-] and hes a great guy and won't rip you off. At the end of the hotel as you go down to the beach is Jula's beach bar. We spent most of our days there, the boys and girls are fantastic, especially Moses Capuccino. There are 3 guys called Moses, but make sure you ask for Moses Capuccino, hes the loveliest most honest guy you can meet and I always shed a tear when saying goodbye to him. He will help you during your stay and cannot do enough for you. Tell him Jo & Michael say Hi!!
Other than that the rooms in Dunes are clean and tidy and the upstairs rooms are huge. Breakfast is basic but you can order, eggs, bacon etc if thats what you prefer. Pool area is nice and clean as Mumin takes pride in his work. Other than that enjoy, Gambia is a wonderful place with some of the friendliest people Ive ever met and I cannot wait to return.
Some restaurants to mention are Luigi's (best Italian food ever), Boss Lady (fantastic Gambian dishes), The Vineyard (excellent) and Koko Curry (nice Indian).

Room Tip: This is a very quiet hotel and you won't get any noise pollution from outside areas

Our third visit to the Gambia was greatly enhanced by our stay at The Dunes Resort & Casino, in Kololi. This small 20 room hotel may lack some evening entertainment, but makes up for it with an above average Gambian welcome and friendliness. Its possible to rent a suit on the first floor or rooms on the ground floor, all are supplied with air conditioning, fan, fridge and safe as part of the package. the rooms are clean, and serviced daily but bear in mind this is Africa, and sometimes things don't work properly! But a word to Kabba or Lamin, the managers and things should be rectified promptly, at least they were for me! The breakfast was basic, consisting of bread, cheese, fruit, sausages, cereals and a very nice omelette cooked by Ibrahim! I didnt try any of the evening meals at the hotel because i like to get out and try some of the local bars and restaurants, but I gather the food is good. As with a lot of the other reviewers I can heartily recommend Julas Bar and restaurant at the end of the Hotel garden, they have an excellent chef who cooks a mean steak and some great Gambian dishes. The pool although small is shallow and perfect for timid swimmers like me, and well looked after by the staff, who bend over backwards to make sure your stay is comfortable. The sea is a short walk away from the hotel and can be seen and heard at all times, fantastic! Its also very shallow and the crashing waves are great fun to dive into! The only downside I could find to the hotel was that the walls are thin and Gambians can be loud! (As can some tourists!). Although you could stay there and lie by the pool or on the beach (the hotel has several umbrellas and loungers on the beach and drinks are served by the delightful Fanta) I would recommend going further afield and exploring the locality, a short taxi ride will take you to Serrakunda Market a colourful and very African experience, Banjul itself has markets and an interesting museum along with Arch 22 to commemorate the bloodless coup of 1994 or for a day trip visit Fatala Game Reserve in Southern Senegal, Gambia has so much more to offer than just sun and sea, the people are friendly and cheerful despite having so little, and the bumpsters seem only to hang around the larger resorts, there were none at Dunes, although i know that the president is clamping down on them anyway. As you might have gathered I love Gambia and I love the people. Give The Gambia and Dunes Resort a try!

Room Tip: Check the window of your room is closed, its quieter. keeps the mosquitos out too!

We stayed at the Dunes over Christmas .. Upon arrival the hotel management advised us not to use Julas bar on the beach as the boys where not good people ... This is total rubbish the food is stunning and all the boys especially Moses are lovely and make your holiday ... we stayed over christmas which was very ... Well if it wasn't for France's and Martin and Jay Jay the waitress we would of been in bed by 10 ... We made our own entertainment and made the most of it the food was okay but when feading 16 people it went to a total waste ... May I just say Jay Jay is the most wonderful person I have ever met and a total credit to the hotel ... But Moses from Julas bar made our holiday and if you are heading out there please ask for Moses capachino as they will know who he is and if you want his phone number I will pass it on ... Words can not express what that guy did for us he is a wonderful person and I would trust him with my life thank you for making my holiday ... We are going back but may be not this hotel it's a little quiet ... Try the Gambian experience .. And the lobster at paradise beach ... Thanks to Moses ...

ideal for a relaxing holiday - spent all the days at the beach bar at the end of the garden. A few minor problems with the room which were reported but not sorted - more cheap and cheerful than comfortable - poor or no entertainment - would not recommend

decided back in September to go to TG for the first time, booked flghts only with Thomas Cook & liked the sound of Dunes.
No deposit required, pay when you arrive, idea seemed a bit strange at first & wife was concerned enough to send off an email just prior to flying
Hotel is in a good location, room(standard room) was fine although I'm sure the Suites are nicer, excellent shower although the wall bracket was broken
Kabba the General Manager was really good as were the Staff, ate in the Hotel a couple of times & the food was excellent
Baba who was the Taxi manager for the Green Taxis outside the Hotel was very good as were the majority of the drivers, I know we could have saved money by using Yellow taxis but we always managed to get the price down from the advertised one
We tended to walk into Sennagambia strip as it only took 20 minutes & then get a Taxi back, I felt sorry for those who tried to get a Taxi in to Sennagambia late on New Years Eve as the traffic was backed up from Palm Riva at the top of the road right to the strip
At the hotel whenever the power went off the generator was fired up within 2-3 minutes so you were never without power for long.
Hotel had free wifi (lobby area only) which worked ok and drinks were reasonably priced for a Hotel
Breakfast was ok, best to have an omlette, there was also bacon & hotdog sausages if you wanted, they were not always offered automatically, plenty of fresh fruit as well
If you like a walk then turn left as you look at the sea, Ghana Town is approx 6.5 miles if you walk along the beach, we did, still trying to work out why, cheated on the way back & stopped at sennagambia had a meal & got a taxi back to the hotel.
Windows had mosquito screens but door seemed to have have gaps which would let things through, saying that I didn't get bitten once in the week I was there & was using 50% deet
I don't think I have caught the Gambian bug, if i did go back it would be to get value out of the cost of the injections
They did have a New Year Eves Gala dinner which looked very professional & well organised but we gave it a miss as its not for us

Having just returned from our second 3 weeks stay at the "Dunes", I have to say that it was just as good as the holiday in 2010. This time we decided to spend Christmas there and we had a wonderful time, a gala dinner is laid on especially on Christmas Eve along with entertainment, very minimal but also very good. We booked a suite and the rooms are alot nicer than the standard downstairs rooms, plenty of places to eat in the surrounding areas so long as you take a torch so that you dont have problems walking along a very dark dirt track to get out onto the road. The food in the hotel is very good & there is always a good selection, but I habe to say that Henrys Bistro which is about 10 mins walk away was wonderful, excellent choice on the menu. One thing I will warn people about is the local conmen, few & far between but they always seem to know your name & the hotel you are staying in & then they tell you that they are "the gardner called Lamin from the Dunes" a couple of guys who appear to be working together to try to get money from the tourists, so please dont be taken in by anybody like this, they will juat spoil your holiday & your trust in the locals. The staff at the Dunes are excellent, two of the waitresses, Fanta & JJ were brilliant always smiling & happy to assist with anything & never once moaning about anything. The Manager "Kabba" is great always happy to help if there are any problems & will always make sure that you get the outcome that is required.

Room Tip: The suites are up stairs with a balcony & have a view of the sea.

Hotel room on ground floor was a bit gloomy and had a slightly musty smell, but comfortable enough with good storage space. Bed comfortable and linen & towels changed frequently. Breakfast was limited but chef happy to make fresh omlettes, fried eggs or pancakes to order. Staff helpful and friendly though could be a bit more 'on the ball' in seeing if tables needed more crockery, cutlery etc. Would'nt go half board as dining area located at back of hotel overlooking garden area and no view at night. Daytime the location was terrific...for a nice lunch turn right on the beach and walk up to Dominos.Hotel had some entertainment on every evening, but it's more interesting to take a taxi to Senegambia strip ( my partner bargained fare down to 50 dalasi per journey) and choose from some excellent restaurants there. We tried Ali Baba Garden, Chillis, Wild Monkey,African Queen...all good value and Wild Monkey has nightly floor show of African dancing and drumming. Also went to The Clay Oven in Fajara....superb Indian cuisine but the manager micromanages everything....wish he'd just let his excellent staff get on with their jobs..Highlight meal was at Scala on the strip. Can't rate it highly enough....superb American corn fed steaks with superb sauces...truly scrumptious!! Back at hotel the Bucarabu bar oppposite the end of the dirt track had some great live music on every night. We hired a taxi for a day and went to Banjul, via the Crocodile pool ( well worth a visit as it's the closest you'll ever get to the beasts). Interesting craft market in Banjul once you've worked past the tat, where you'll see the tailors & seamstresses hard at work making fabulously embroidered garments for the locals.

Room Tip: Would go for a suite if stayed here again
