We stayed for one week in April, hoping to have an adventure in an out-of-the way spot. Footsteps ticked these boxes - we went fishing and to the nature reserve and went on long walks along the deserted beach. The lodge itself was fairly basic but clean - the food was delicious but expensive bearing in mind local prices (about £10 for a main meal). The staff were very helpful in arranging activities and giving us advice / having a chat! We spent some time visiting the local school and village, which was a truly eye-opening experience. The walk to the beach took about 20-25 minutes and was hot and dusty, but overall pleasant as through farmland and lots of interesting things to see. We weren't bothered or harassed at all, which I understand is what happens at more touristy spots in the North. If you're after a week relaxing by a pool this is probably not the place - it's better as a base for going out and about, although we spent a couple of afternoons relaxing on the beach completely alone (there is literally nothing at the beach, so need to take your own water etc). The pool is more a paddling pool and is small and covered, so very cold at all times! Overall we had a fantastic time, loved the area and the Gambia. We'd recommend the canoe trip with Amadou along the river and popping into Senegal for lunch, and Surani was a fantastic guide for around the village / further afield, mainly because he knew lots of short cuts and could answer any and every question we had!! Lunch at Lamin Lodge is a must. At times we were skeptical of the eco-credentials of the lodge although the composting toilets and staff benefits were fairly convinicing. The way in which the staff were talked to was disturbing at times, and the word 'colonial' comes to mind when considering the local Brits. Overall the staff seemed better off working there than at the chain hotels up North though.

We wanted to relax in the heat and be extremely lazy and Footsteps provided us with the perfect place. Simple and not at all 'glitzy', we were looked after beautifully by the staff and owners whilst being allowed all the space we needed to relax. Opportunities to do trips, learn african drumming, batik, make jewellery etc all available if you want more. Delightful strolls through the bush to the sea (wonderful deserted beaches) or to the village. Fabulous trip up river into senegal. Delicious food. Friendly villagers.
We went briefly to Senegambia and were thankful to return to Footsteps .
Dont go if you want nightlife and noise. Do go if you want peace and an authentic experience.
The eco-loos were brilliant!

Was a bit concerned - booked via internet for 7 dAy stay which included transfers but should not have worried at all - when we cleared customs at Banjul airport the 'big foot' sign was waiting for us with a big smile, and we did not stop smiling throughout our stay at Footsteps. If you are looking for great hospitality in a totally relaxed environment with good food and at the same time plenty of excursions and activities if you want - this is the place for you. We are planning on going back soon.

  • Liked — Even though were in the bush - the cleanliness of the accomodation was great
  • Disliked — nothing

The warm, friendy greeting on arrival sets the scene for your holiday. David, the Owner, Mark the Manager and all the staff put you at ease the minute you walk into the Lodge. An oasis in the middle of the bush where you can do absolutely nothing but blend in and feel at home instantly. The food is excellent with the fruit and veg grown in their own grounds. (a side benefit of compost toilets etc) If you can be bothered, the beach (and the walk there) is a revelation. Warm sea, hot sand and in November, the only ones there! Should you feel like an excursion, a word with David or Mark and the trip is arranged.
All the staff are very helpfull and friendly and work very hard for your enjoyment of their country.
We cannot wait to go again and next time stay for two weeks instead of one. No doubt not the cheapest of places to stay, but the value of what you get is far in excess of what you actually pay for.

amazing I went out there alone with my two children 13 and 6. I couldnt rate them highly enough. Its like being at a mini oasis the staff are great helpful polite food fantastic. I'm going there for christmas and the new year with the kids they dont want to go anywhere else. Since we got back seven months ago we still constantly talk about footsteps there is a guide there called Sarani who takes you out and he is brilliant he was so protective of the kids and of me and he really educates you on the african culture. If you want a amazing relaxing friendly holiday go to footsteps there was no negatives about the whole holiday even going out you find nothing but smiles from the gambians they are so friendly and helpful its just heaven out there
