We stayed at Ngala for two weeks 8/10-22/10 and had a superb holiday. Jenny has a terrific staff who are a real credit to her leadership. The hotel is idyllic, very peaceful and thoughtfully laid out, no sunbed cities like we saw in other hotels just lots of secluded spots. We were looking for a small hotel with excellent service and we honestly couldn't have asked for more. We swam in the sea from the beach platforms most days & because it's small often had the pool area to ourselves too. We enjoyed being treated to the Lodge's charity events which added an extra special dimension to a perfect holiday, batteries recharged we're only sorry we can't come back for a few months!

Room Tip: The Manor Lodge rooms on the first floor are great and get the sun all afternoon, we also had a week...

My brother booked Ngala for his daughters wedding. So the whole lodge was full of people attending. It was wonderful ! We all had a fabulous time. Aside from that, I was there as a family member and sadly my hubby was overseas. I showed him the photos and videos etc and we are now booked up to return for New Year. I just new it was the ideal place for us. The staff were wonderful and I loved the way they just made me feel at home. Now due to my husbands work we have stayed in many very grand hotels. Well I will tell ---YOU ---grand hotels you need to get your act together to compete with this charming place.

Room Tip: Adult only hotel so difficult to make comment. However they did make an exception for my niece as w...

Just returned from a wonderful two week stay at this excellent hotel, we had an absolutely fantastic holiday from start to finish(1/10/13-15/10/13).
It has been mentioned in so many previous reviews but has to be said that Ngala Lodges greatest asset is its wonderful staff. There was not one single member of staff who was not cheerful, polite and helpful, all go out of their way to make your holiday special. Manageress Jenny was so welcoming and friendly,a great personality, she made sure any problems large or small were dealt with promptly and efficiently. Have to give a special mentions to Malik who made sure the restaurant ran smoothly and to the smiley, hard working Dembo whose job title I'm not sure of but he seemed to do everything from bringing us frequent drinks at the pool to maintaining our jacuzzi when we had temperature problems.
The food was of excellent standard, Jonathan Is a brilliant chef. Have to recommend the goats cheese starter and my husband said the beef fillet was 'to die for' he had it so often he is now suffering withdrawal symptoms.
We were lucky to stay in the wonderful Babeth suite,it's massive with breathtaking views of the sea and beautiful gardens,we loved the Rolling Stones artwork.
We did a couple of day trips with Gambia experience, both good, but the highlight of our holiday had to be our tour of the south of the country with taxi driver Habid. We saw so much in one day,Serekunda market,a snake farm,a charity school and the incredible Tanji fishing village.
Habid is a lovely man,so knowledgable,he taught us so much about the country.
A big thank you to everyone at Ngala Lodge for making this such a brilliant and special holiday. Saving hard to hopefully return next year.

The other great reviews say it all really. We stayed in an Atlantic Suite, which was huge. The decor is nice as well as having loads of space. It's also very clean, which was a relief. I wasn't sure what it would be like having seen some other hotels on the way here. We had a lovely private terrace with sun loungers and a jacuzzi we could never use because it was too hot for us.....we thought we could have ended up cooking like lobsters in a pan!

The food was fantastic.....my only thing to say to improve it was that portions were too big, not a bad thing to complain about really! The prices for soft drinks and alcohol were reasonable I thought, about £2.80ish for a large glass of decent wine. There is a fridge in your room and a system where you can order different things to be stocked in it each day.

The staff really make a difference at this place. They are so, so friendly and they make sure the general atmosphere is really nice too.

We decided we wanted a week of total chilling out, so we didn't leave the hotel!! Lots of places to sunbathe, pool, gardens or beach. Fortunately the beach had a breeze because it was very hot. There is a little bit of rubbish of beach which seems to wash in from the sea. As the sunbeds and cabanas are raised on some lovely decking it's not too big a deal, I just thought it could do with a little tidy up.

Most people went on trips or walked to the local village and seemed to really enjoy it.

One thing I would have done differently which is nothing to do with the hotel is book a private transfer from the airport. We had to wait an hour for the coach to be ready to leave and then do a drop off at another hotel. This isn't too bad but as the private transfers are so affordable, on reflection that would have been a better way to do it.

The weather was beautiful. On the rare occasions it did rain, it was night time and fascinating to watch.

I guess my last comment would be that when you consider the service/experience you get here, for what it costs.....it's a cracking deal.

We arrived at Ngala Lodge on 24 October 2013 having read many positive reviews on this site. We were not disappointed as the hotel didn't just live up to our expectations, it exceeded them.

Jenny, the hotel manager, made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived. She went out of her way throughout the holiday to make sure everyone was looked after. We also found the staff at the hotel to be extremely friendly and helpful. Special thanks to our "Mo Farah" lookalike, Malik, for making sure our drinks were always topped up. Also, to Demba who was always on hand to help out around the pool area.

The hotel is situated on a hill which leads down to the beach through some wonderfully well kept gardens. The beach had daily visitors - the vultures - which were wonderful to watch.

The suites are very spacious and are all decorated individually, which gives them a unique feel. The restaurant is a lovely open sided room which allows a nice breeze on the hot evenings. Every other night in the restaurant there is entertainment which creates a welcoming and friendly ambience. The menu offers a good selection of food and the quality would equal any Michelin star restaurant.

People who are visiting The Gambia for the first time can be assured that the people are very friendly and it is perfectly safe to go out and explore the local community.

We would also recommend the various trips offered by The Gambia Experience which are value for money and give you the opportunity to explore "the real Gambia". We especially enjoyed our 4 wheel drive trip which included a visit to a school. During the visit to the school you are encouraged to interact with the children in the classroom, which we thoroughly enjoyed. Just by taking some books and pencils, or giving a little money to the school, you are helping to fund their education which would not be possible without the generosity of tourists.

Overall, we had a great holiday, we met some lovely people and on our last night the staff pulled out all the stops and helped arrange a large get together of 18 of us for our "last supper" before we had to head home. Jonathan did a wonderful job of providing great quality food and ensuring all the meals arrived at the same time. A wonderful evening was had by all.

So thank you Jenny and all the staff for making it such a wonderful holiday and keep up the good work.

My partner and I stayed at the Ngala Lodge from 24/10/2013 - 01/10/2013. We had one regret in the whole time we were there - that we did not book for two weeks!

The whole Gambia experience is pure magic from start to finish and the Ngala Lodge is the icing on the cake. Our room was spacious overlooking the pool and the Atlantic Ocean with a huge balcony from which we watched Vultures circling, morning and evening. We have superb footage of a true tropical thunderstorm raging in the evening - an unbelievable sight.

All of the staff from Jenny the General Manager right down to the maids made us feel welcome and at home from the moment we arrived. The food is out of this world, Gourmet presentation, and huge portions. Jonathon the Chef grows many of the salad leaves and herbs in his own garden.

We owe our thanks to Habib, the hotels resident taxi driver for showing us the real Gambia from Monkeys to Giant Prawns on Paradise Beach to Serekunda Market, not to mention Tangier with all its sights, smells and sounds.

One word of warning once you have stayed at this hotel it will spoil you for all others. It is our intention to return to the Smiling Coast and the Ngala Lodge next year. The only difference will be that it will be for TWO WEEKS!
