“doesn't live up to reviews”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2012

Visited with friends in january having been encouraged by previous good reviews. Very disappointed with very slow and almost dismissive service from staff. We ordered only fairly simple pizza's and beers but they only had two bottles of beer in stock ! and the pizzas took over an hour to arrive, did not have the correct toppings and the bases were burnt. There are many very good restaurants in Gambia but, on the evidence of our visit, this is not one of them.

“Dissapointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2012

After reading such great reviews, we invited some friends out for the evening saying that Trip Advisor reviews never lie.....
Slow service, and not that gracious, no air conditioning, no cold bottled water, ran out of beer after 2 bottles, cutlery was dirty, toilets were shabby. The food..... burnt bases on the pizza, toppings not matching the menu when served, nothing outstanding, not even average.
Very disappointed especially after reading such good reviews, and very embarrassed after suggesting we go there. There are far better places to eat locally, we would not recommend it.

“Power cut enhanced the experience.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2012

We went to visit the Italian Connection on 6th Janaury after researching on the internet, prior to our travelling. When we left our hotel (Ocean Bay), we were immediately 'befriended' by a local man who wanted to escort us to our chosen destination. As he seemed friendly, and it was pitch black outside the hotel due to one of the regular power failures in the area, we let him walk us there. We were glad when he pointed out the doorway, after about a 10 minute walk from the hotel to the restaurant, as we would never have found it otherwise. We were less than impressed when he first asked for a tip for the 'escort duty' and secondly when he said he
could wait until we came out the restaurant so he could escort us back. We told him that it was not necessary to escort us back as it is literally a straight road from the hotel to the restaurant. Inside the Italian Connection, it was also pitch black, save for a few candles. We were sat down and had a candle placed on our table by Danny, the owner, who assured us he was able to feed us despite the black-out, but pizza was off the menu without the power on. The service was not exactly lightning fast but we realised that the lack of power was a major factor, and we enjoyed chatting to the only other couple in the restaurant, who were long term residents of the area who stayed for 3 months at a time for the last 15 years. We ordered pasta dishes. My wife had tagliatelli and I had raviolo cupido (a beef ravioli). Both plates of food were nicely
presented and tasty, and we could have no complaints on the quality of food offered, especially considering they were literally cooking on gas only, with no electricity. We were somewhat amused later on when the 'escort' was seem receiving a backhander consideration from the owner for safely delivering us to his establishment, and came up to us to say he couldn't wait anymore (after about 90 minutes) and so we were able to walk back to our hotel unescorted. We also had some soft drinks but no alcohol. The bill was 800 Dalasi for our food, about £17.50- £18, including a tip. We had a nice evening and the staff were on good form despite the power cuts and the frustration that it must have caused them.

“Simply the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2011

Not many European Italien Restaurants are able to offer you the quality of Italian food you can get here. Pizzas of all sizes, Pasta and a very good Lasagne. Only an italian chief is able to do that. It is nice to go out of the hotel-area, sit in the garden of Italian Connection Restaurant and relax. If you like Italian food, this may be the only place in the Gambia you can get good quality for a fair price.

“Great Food, Great Welcome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2011

We'd chosen to eat here twice during our 2 week stay in the Gambia at the Ocean Bay which is a short walk away down Kofi Annan street. On our first visit the food was hearty, plentiful and well cooked and the second time was no different. We had garlic bread with cheese which was basically a small margareta pizza with garlic - really nice and we also had a glass of the house red which was lovely.

The main meals are fully flavoured and just like a home cooked itallian meal would be. Service was fast, freindly and efficient and best of all, the olive to top the whole experience is the owner Danilo who is a really nice guy ensuring you have a good time and I'd reccommend him as a source of info on the Gambia from a European perspective. Just ask him about his adopted cat Inter Milan too for a great story.

Prices vary from 300-600 Delasi but our meal, 1 starter, 2 alcoholic drinks, 1 soft drink and 2 main meals came to just 850 Dalasi which was a great price. I also noticed that they do takeout (they provided us with a takeout box for a meal we couldn't finish) and locals dropped by for takeout meals while we were there.

I'd definatley recommend eating there during your stay especially if you want a tasty and filling meal.
