“Lovely place to dine...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2012

We visited the Savory Grill this weekend as we were meeting friends from Rockland and this was a nice "in between" spot. We were not disappointed. When we arrived, we received their regular menu which had a very nice variety of dishes. My husband had noticed in the local paper that there were a "special" going on - Dinner for 2 and an appetizer for $25.00, and he asked about it. The waitress then gave us a"special menu". We ordered our dishes from that and were pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious and plentiful, the service very pleasant and the price excellent. For appetizers we had the eggplant rollatini and our friends had the steak satay and we ordered the egg rolls as an extra. All were excellent. For entrees, the people we dined with had the chicken marsala and a seafood/pasta dish and my husband and I both had the tilapia dish. Everything was very fresh and the vegetables were prepared well. For dessert, we had apples in a pastry with ice cream, and the other couple had mixed berries with ice cream. We were delighted with all the food and the bill very VERY reasonable. We would go back again!

“Ups and Downs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 4, 2012

While we live in the area we hadn't eaten at the Savory Grill for a few years. We went today because we had a gift certificate. Arrived at 1 PM and were the only customers for the entire time we were there. A few years ago the place was packed at mid-day on a Sunday. What happened? We don't know. For those who have reviewed and said the place was dark, dingy and in need of freshening up...yes, there is an outside awning that is torn. Yes, the entry-way is plain cement...a welcome mat would help. But the owners must have read the reviews because the place has been painted and the dining room is bright and clean (with clean white tablecloths and napkins). A local artist has her framed watercolors (for sale) decorating the walls. There was no one in the bar but the tv sound was all that we had to accompany our meal...no music. Silence would have been better yet. Bit of a surprise when the ladies room door was open (in the dining rooom) and when I sent in there was a curling iron (on!) lying on the sink counter. When the waitress was told she apologized and said "most people use the other bathroom...I used this when I came in to work." Maybe that's why the trash can was filled and the paper holders were empty??? When asked for a wine list we learned there isn't one (a hint?). When asked for the brand the waitress said, "Flip Flop." OK, never heard of it but tried a glass (generous size) of the pinot noir. Drinkable but certainly nothing to write home about. The steamed little neck clams were in a nice warm tomato, garlic and onion broth. The clams themselves were various sizes but the owner probably had little choice. At least they were fresh. Bread was skimpy BUT it was warm (no excuse for a restaurant to serve cold bread). Spouse's nice tossed salad had an excellent raspberry vinagrette. I had sirloin steak sandwich with grilled onions and mushroom (lots). I deliberately ordered it rare, expecting it not to be...and it wasn't. It was between medium rare and medium, but it was ok. Pretty decent piece of meat. The french fries accompanying were quite good (although I don't eat them)...crispy, hot, and not greasy. Spouse's European apple pancake was huge...covered with confectioner's sugar and served with syrup on the side. He loved it.
Still can't figure out what happened to this place which for the first couple of years after it opened was jam-packed day and night. We had the post-baptism luncheon (grandchild) here a few years ago and everything was superb. So -- take your pick...ups or downs!
