“great place for a family holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2009

We stayed in the Wintergreen Cottage with my dog and 15 month old son. We were really quite pleased with the accomodations, the cottage had everything we needed (including a crib for the baby, as requested). The kitchen was well stocked with cooking implements and cutlery and there were some staples so that we could cook dinner without having to buy our own olive oil, salt, etc... The whole place was very tidy and my husband and son enjoyed playing in the jacuzzi tub. Michelle and Noah were super friendly and accomodating, all while respecting our privacy. Also, their dedication to recycling and maintaining an eco friendly space is really inspring.
The cottages are quite well located, close to the Mohonk preserve and many small towns (great for day trips). I'd love to come back in the fall to stay and see the leaves changing, etc...
All around a great trip!!

My boyfriend and I have made a summer plan to explore the beautiful nature around NYC area. We were looking into hiking trails around the Catskill and a place to stay for a weekend get-away. We would also like to bring our cat along with us, so after some internet research on pet-friendly B&Bs, I came across Clove Cottages. They have a very comprehensive website that shows you images of both interior and exterior of the seven cottages they offer, and provides very good information on nearby area attractions. I was immediately attracted to the idea of self-sufficient cottages, where guests can enjoy their privacy and are able to prepare their own meals. And the images of cottages looked just so charming! So we made a reservation on the cozy blue cottage right away!
We arrived on a heavily rainy afternoon, Michelle (plus their super friendly dog and cats) was there in front of their house to greet us warmly. Michelle and Noah are very nice and helpful inn-keepers and they really take care to maintain the cottages and grounds well. When we got into our cottage, it was simple and cozy just as we expected from the website. The cottage was well stocked with a set of pots and pans, plates, utensils, cups and glasses (wine glasses too). There were a small fridge, a microwave, a toaster oven, a coffee maker and a two-burner range top. There was also a small fixed outdoor grill by each cottage available for use (need charcoal). They also provided cooking oils (canola & olive), salt, pepper, sugar, ground coffee & filters for the machine, tea bags, and Michelle's home made granola (super yummy!). The bathroom was small but sufficient, with towels, shampoos, homemade guest soap and a hair dryer. The queen size bed was very comfortable for a good night's sleep. Sunday morning Noah delivered a basket of toasty warm cranberry chocolate scones freshly baked by Michelle. What a relaxing and delicious breakfast we had on our own pace!! We were also able to make a nice dinner one evening, and we just love the flexibility a private cottage can offer! Oh, and they have two adorable llamas! They are such peaceful creature. It was so nice to see them grazing around the property (no worries, they are fenced in; they won't pay you a surprise visit at your cottage).
The location of Clove Cottages is very close to numerous nature reserves and not far from the Catskill State Park, so there are plenty to do. We only managed to do one day-hike at Sam's Point Preserve during our two nights stay because of the relentless downpour from the sky. But now we have an excuse to come back again for another visit. When we were leaving, Michelle so generously cut some salad greens from their wonderful garden for us to take back! We had a great experience!

We stayed in the green cabin. It was very close to Rock Hill Road, but there is little traffic on the road so there was no complaint from us of noise. Our 13 year old dog was on her first vacation and this was our first trip to New York state. We were unable to do the things we wanted because we could not leave the dog alone in the cabin, but those are the rules, and we knew that going in. Overall, this location and cottage was wonderful. The signs throughout the cottage helped us tremendously. Noah and Michele have taken the time to put up little signs to answer all the specific questions one may have about the cottage. There is also a binder that is on the table when you walk in. We found this a valuable tool in learning about the history of the cottages and giving us information that we needed, including all rules and regulations, the internet password, local restaurants and attractions.

The cottage was very clean. The ants (which Noah and Michele apologized for on a cottage note) were few and far between and never really caused us a problem. I am a bit of an arachnophobe, so the spiders did freak me out, but for the most part they were also non-existent. Noah and Michele did everything they could to make our stay a great one. When our dog had a problem with the wooden floors (she was slipping on them and terrified), Michele came up with runner rugs so she wouldn't slip and fall. Now where else will you get that kind of service ?

The area was beautiful and the view of The Mohonk Mountain House was spectacular. The Clove Cottage area was so quiet and serene. This was just what we needed to give us the peace and relaxation that we needed. The scones that Noah delivered on Sunday morning were gone within 20 minutes....absolutley delicious. And not to mention the homemade soap (Michele makes it herself). We will be returning in the fall. This time without our dog so that we may take in all the High Falls/New Paltz area has to offer. Hats off to Noah and Michele for making Clove Cottages one of the best places we have ever stayed !

Just one last note to Michele.....darkening blinds in the bedroom would be a good idea for this cottage also. The sunrise did wake us up each morning...but with that comfortable bed, it was quite easy to fall back asleep.

The cabins are nice and so are the owners, and accomodating. They are environmentalists though so if you are afraid of bugs such as ants and spiders, this isn't the place for you. They do not spray so there are bugd around. The cabins are far from modern, which is in a way nice, but their is no TV reception, requiring the use of DVDs or VHS tapes if your cabin permits. We stayed in Wintergreen and the TV was, maybe, 19-inch. Tiny! Not a big deal since that wasn't what we were there for, but be aware. The trails in the area all seem to cost money and there was little to no parking even after you paid. The trails were very crowded with folks coming from NYC. We went for the wineries in the area, which are very nice. Good wine made in this region, although most all tastings cost money too. You must spend a bit of energy figuring out what to recyle, compost, ect. Also, we stayed for 3 nights and only got one set of towels for each of us so you might want to bring some of your own.The paper towels have zero absorbancy so you might want to bring them too if you use them. The coffee they have is good but I had to wash the machine real well before using it because it was very dirty. Also, you will wake up early because they only have light curtains which let in mucho light as soon as the sun rises.

In response to this review:
Our primary goal is to provide an easy going, peaceful place for people to get away and relax in a natural setting. We take pride in our cottages and try to keep them to good standards of cleanliness and upkeep. Most guests are quite happy with the cottages and how clean they are. The cottages are modestly furnished and not fancy. Perhaps the coffee maker doesn't sparkle and it's possible some grounds are overlooked, but it's clean.
It's true we are environmentalists. We do take recycling seriously and are not willing to use pesticides. We compost your food scraps here. We do (gently) remove spiders when we see them. TV reception is limited. Each cottage has a DVD player, some also have VHS. We do offer a nice selection of movies guests can borrow and we do have free wireless onsite.
We always ask our guests to let us know if they need anything. We do try to accomodate requests when made.
Many of our guests come here for the hiking and are very satifsfied with their experiences in the parks here. There are many hiking trails nearby. It is very rare to see them all crowded. The State Preserve fee is $7/car -not much for what an amazing place it is.
We appreciate any feedback our guests can give us as to how we can improve their experience here. We have now added darkening blinds to this cottage.

My boyfriend and I went to Clove Cottages last April and absolutely loved it. We were so happy to have found this place, because we really prefer having the privacy and space of our own cottage to staying in B&Bs. Plus they are pet friendly so we could bring our dog!

We stayed in the Wintergreen cabin. The King bed was extremely comfortable. I loved the country chic decor. It was really wonderful to be able to sit by the propane fireplace at night, but to also relax on the porch on a sunny afternoon. One warning - the jacuzzi tub is the size of a normal tub, so it really only fits one person.

The cottage features a real full kitchen, so you can save money by doing some of your own cooking and not having to eat out every night. I think it's so smart that they give you pancake mix, granola, eggs, etc to make breakfast for yourself instead of having to wake up early just to get breakfast (I hate that about most hotels/b&bs - I'm on vacation, so why would I want to eat breakfast at 9am??) On Sundays they bring you fresh baked scones, but they left it wrapped up on our porch so we could go out and fetch it when we wanted. As an added bonus - Clove Cottages is a totally eco friendly operation - offering local organic foods, handmade soap, composting, recycling, etc. It felt like a home away from home.

There are so many terrific things to do in the area - hiking, rock climbing, wine tasting, good restaurants and bars in the area in New Paltz and High Falls. We are planning to go back this spring with a group of friends so we can share the fun!

We stayed in the Yellow Cottage last summer for two nights to celebrate our first wedding anniversary and it was one of the best vacations we've ever taken. I've been to New Paltz and the surrounding areas many times over the years, mainly to climb in the Gunks, so I'm familiar with the area, and knew there would be plenty of beautiful trails to explore.

The cottages are located on a pretty, quiet road, and although it's slightly easy to get lost, it's a gorgeous part of the Shawangunk ridge so we didn't mind doing a little accidental exploring to get there. We stayed in the yellow cottage. The cottage was spotlessly clean, extremely roomy for two people, and since it was very, very hot when we visited we can say the a/c cooled the place off nicely at night. Our favorite part of the stay was the trail at the back of the property that leads to an amazing swimming hole, which is the perfect way to end a day of exploring the area when it's hot out. Noah and Michelle were extremely friendly, and ended up recommending a brilliant vegetarian restaurant a few towns over for dinner.

Instead of having our breakfast made for us, the kitchen was stocked with all kind of tasty, very fresh ingredients and we were able to make ourselves a great meal each morning with what they supplied. To be honest, we liked this much better than having to wait for breakfast, we could just eat on our own schedule. The granola and fruit was especially fresh.

The only negative of our whole trip was how lost we got trying to get back after dinner, it is pitch dark on some of the roads out there, but this is really our fault. If you plan to explore the surrounding areas a good map or GPS is a must. We plan to return as soon as we can.

Me and my girlfriend went to Clove Cottages and I left with my fiance. This place was amazing, we had to split between the Blue studio and the wintergreen cottage. Both were spectacular. I spoke to Michelle several times to make arrangements which she was more than happy to accomadate. I had a dozen roses in the room which were there when we arrived and we relaxed on the porch admiring the llamas. They were very friendly and curious creatures!

The decor of the cabins was fabulous for what it was... a cabin in the woods. The propane fireplace worked well and kept us cosy at night and the jacuzzi tub was great! The rooms were clean and well prepared as well.

The breakfast foods were delicious and Noah came by to offer us freshly baked chocolate scones on sunday morning. This is the first bed and breakfast that had us make the food, but it certainly wasnt minded because we can cook whenever we woke up... and who wants some guy cooking in our cabin anyway!

We went to Mohonk on a day pass, which was the only thing that was worth it there. The food was horrific, but we got to hike the labrynth trail.

Overall, this was a perfect place to propse to my love and I recommend it highly. Also, you can write in the journals about your visit which was cool. We read about other experience to the cottages. (Which were equally great!)
