“A charming Inn in a lovely village.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2012

The Colgate Inn is the place to take someone for a special occasion. Their brunch is wonderful, many items from which to choose and each and every one is done to perfection. Take the ride to Hamilton and the Colgate Inn. You won't be sorry.

“Great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

We ate at the Colgate Inn for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food was delcious and excellent value. service was second to none. We were even served coffee after dinner in the lobby. It was that extra littel touch that made our stay perfect.

“GOOD FOOD...GOOD SERVICE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2012

My wife and I recently had dinner at the Colgate Inn in Hamilton, N.Y. We have eaten there many times and enjoyed it. This time was no different. The setting was casual, the service was excellent. The food was very good and the price was right.

I had a Prime Rib Panini: Slow roasted prime rib, roasted red pepper mayonnaise, Swiss cheese, caramelized onion and sautéed mushrooms on grilled Italian bread. The meat was tender and tasty. For a side dish I enjoyed Sweet Potato Fries. You will love them.

My wife had the House Salad: mixed greens, iceberg, pickled red onion, seasonal mixed berries with a strawberry vinaigrette. She selected to have it topped with grilled Atlantic Salmon. It was an excellent choice.

If you are in the area, this is a great place for good food and service.

“Inconsistancy Reigns”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

The Colgate Inn is nestled in the center of Hamilton, New York and its once very tired appearance has been greatly enhanced due to its multi-million dollar renovation. The writer will comment on the restaurant only, since he has not booked a room for overnight lodging.

The grand old building has seating available under a splendid canopy (all new) with views of the quaint village. The inside restaurant features a contiguous tavern seating with a larger dining area. The decor was pleasant. This writer was there immediately after the reopening and the deafening sound was unbearable. A review was not written then in fairness for the restaurant to work-out all the kinks.Six months later, the writer returned and much to his delight the ceiling, fixtures and flooring had all been dampened and the reverberant sound was non-existent.

The dining area features tables with different seating arrangements and comfortably spaced. One first notices that in a restaurant of this caliber, there was not a linen tablecloth nor even place mats. The table was marked, stained, pocked and otherwise unflattering for a finer dining experience...totally unacceptable. Inside a rolled napkin only a knife and dinner fork were found.
Again, what is wrong here?

The waiter was polite, knowledgeable and at times a little overzealous about the menu. The wine and beer lists were very good. He was very attentive and not hovering. When the party of four were ordering, he raved about each choice being a great selection. The writer could not resist a little joke to ask him if he would say anything was not the greatest. He laughed and said that he would definitely advise his customers if anything would fall short of their expectations.
He described the chef specials and one entree had a $34 price tag...again perhaps worth it, but to sit at a table with inadequate furnishings...wrong.

Drinks and appetizers were ordered. The calamari was excellent...tender, lightly breaded and served with a marinara. The waiter asked if we would like appetizer plates or if we wanted to use our bread and butter plates. Again...inconsistent. The party said that they would prefer separate appetizer plates which he brought quickly. After the appetizer was finished, the waiter did not take the "dinner" fork away until asked by the writer for a new fork. He brought the writer an entire set-up with knife, fork and napkin. Again...wrong...and only the writer was brought a set-up. The others in the party were forced to use the same flatware. For a restaurant of this caliber, totally unacceptable.

Entrees ranged from beef to seafood selections and all were prepared and flavored well. The cioppino came with New Zealand mussels instead of fresh PEI mussels. This should not happen in a restaurant like this. Sinceone diner did not have a spoon, he did not finish the sauce. Another diner had "fresh cut and fried" french fries which were overcooked, dry and otherwise tasteless. In all fairness, all of the entrees were acceptable to very good. Desserts were not ordered since one of the diners advised the party that he had ordered several of them at a prior visit and that they were not worth the calories.

For the price and what the restaurant pretends to be, the writer would be very hesitant to recommend it to others. If corrections are made, a new review would be in order. But until then, the inconsistencies far outweigh the advantages for a restaurant of this caliber which one would expect.
