“Eco-friendly hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 3, 2013

We have stayed at the Greenporter numerous times. Rooms are simple, but attractive, and we like the hotel's emphasis on eco-friendly materials. Careful attention to service, great location in Greenport, and an excellent bistro restaurant next door. Continental breakfast is terrific.

Suggestion- I do think they should rethink their complicated reservation policy-since they can't afford cancellations in their small setting, they require a signed confirmation form, faxed or scanned to them. People want to feel they can be spontaneous when they get away-this process is too cumbersome, and somehow has a negative feel. But otherwise, a lovely stay at a place that is a welcome change from the "box" hotels.

We stayed here as part of a wedding block this summer. The walls were thin, amenities were pretty meh, and for the price (almost $300/night plus a bunch of bogus add on charges), we weren't impressed and felt pretty ripped off. The front desk staff was definitely nice and ready to help, so no knocks on the service. But for $300 a night, stay in a B&B out there and get more bang for your buck.

Dear Freddy,

Thank you for your feedback of The Greenporter Hotel.

We always encourage our guests to research room rates and accommodations in the area, and those who do so know that The Greenporter Hotel offers a great value for lodging in Eastern Long Island. Due to the nature of the area, the summer weekend rates of all of the local lodging establishments are at their highest levels. There are a few properties in the area that routinely have lower, more budget oriented rates, but these properties are further from the centers of activity and do not offer the same amenities or accessibility to the downtown Greenport area. The bride and groom carefully researched the available lodging options and felt that The Greenporter Hotel was the best value for their guests based on the services we provide and the convenience of our location.

The Greenporter Hotel has an onsite restaurant, Cuvee Seafood and Grille, which provides complimentary continental breakfast to our guests every morning during the summer. Cuvee also serves lunch and dinner and offers poolside and room service to our guests during applicable hours. During the summer, our outdoor pool and hot tub are open from 9am-7pm.

We agree that Greenport has many quaint B&Bs, but we are careful to provide extensive photos and descriptions of our guest rooms on our website to emphasize that we are not a B&B. Nonetheless, in most cases our prices are significantly less than these establishments with significantly more services and amenities. The Greenporter Hotel is really a B&B alternative for travelers seeking some anonymity along with the casual comfort and service of a small beach-style hotel in wine country.

We are surprised to hear that you feel you may have been overcharged as a result of add on charges. Other than the required taxes, charges might consist of food and beverages you may have billed to your room. We always provide customers with a copy of their signed receipt for their consumption and would like to answer any questions you may have regarding your final receipt. We are very sorry that you departed without having your questions satisfied and ask you to call us at front desk at 631-477-0066 or email us at info@thegreenporter.com so that we may review this matter together.

Positive notes: Room was very clean, staff extremely nice and helpful, convenient to town, continental breakfast was good (weekends only). Pool was clean and well maintained. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water.

Not-so-great notes: the mattress is nearly on the floor - cheap furniture that was probably purchased at the local Target - toiletries were "odd" (shampoo but no conditioner - no bath soap). No ice maker (you get ice from a beer cooler). Windows look into the parking lot or onto a chained link fence. Had to hold the lever down on the toilet or it didn't completely flush. Decor is as PLAIN as it gets!

When you make a reservation, you get a strange email that has instructions to fax in a confirmation. Without the fax, your reservation is NOT complete. Weird (who has a fax machine? What is this for?). The email says two different things about payment. First, it says that you will be charged in full upon confirmation of your reservation. Later in the same email, it says that a 25% deposit will be charged upon confirmation and the balance will be charged two weeks prior to arrival. Neither is accurate. I was charged the 25% deposit but the balance was not charged until I checked in.

Cancellation policy is very rigid with high penalties (in some cases 100% is still charged).

Overall, once I arrived in town and walked around, I saw several quaint B&B's that looked very charming. I wished I had investigated those further prior to committing with the Greenporter.

Dear Winelover,

Thank you for your feedback of The Greenporter Hotel.

We are pleased you enjoyed the convenience of our location, the courtesy of our staff, and our weekend breakfast.

We always encourage our guests to research room rates and accommodations in the area, and those who do so know that the Greenporter Hotel offers a great value for lodging in Eastern Long Island. During off-seasons or weekdays when our restaurant is closed, our room rates are anywhere from $80 to $100 less vs. the weekend when the restaurant is open. The great thing about being located in the Village is that you can walk to the dozen or more restaurants, pubs and cafes when our restaurant is not
open.

We require confirmed reservations because we are a small, seasonal hotel without the ability to overbook like a chain hotel. Due to high demand and a limited number of lodging establishments in the surrounding area, we are not unable to relocate a guest in the event of an overbooking. By returning the signed contract to confirm your room, you promise to come and we promise to hold the room. The confirmation states that you have read and understood the cancellation policy and that you are authorizing The Greenporter Hotel to take a 25% deposit to hold the room. However, if you have internet access, you can book online without having to sign or fax the confirmation.

Regarding our room amenities, we offer two bars of soap in each guest room (one for the sink and one for the shower) plus tissues, shampoo and body lotion. In addition, we offer many other amenities such as irons, hair dryers, and coffee makers in the rooms, as well as complimentary on-site parking, wifi, beach passes, and continental breakfast on the weekends year round and seven days a week from Memorial Day through Labor day. Additionally, anything you forget such as a toothbrush, razor, ear plugs, etc, will be provided to you with compliments if you contact the front desk by dialing O from the room phone.

We agree that Greenport has many quaint B&Bs, but we are careful to provide extensive photos and descriptions of our guest rooms on our website and all of our printed marketing materials to make clear that we are not one of them. The Greenporter Hotel is really a B&B alternative for travelers seeking some anonymity along with the casual comfort and service of a small beach-style hotel in wine country.

Thank you again for choosing the Greenporter Hotel and we hope you will continue to discover this exciting wine region.

We really loved this place. The staff were friendly, the room was comfortable (some reviewers said that it was reminiscent of a dorm room, but it's a really nice dorm room), they take Green/LEED lodging seriously, and their restaurant, Cuvee, is top-notch. We would definitely stay there again- it's in walking distance of the Village of Greenport's "downtown", and a quick drive to the beaches and wineries nearby. Even the continental breakfast was prepared with care- they get a lot of the small details right, and the staff at the front desk and restaurant are very accommodating and personable.

Green Features: They take "environmentally friendly' to a new level- some places pay lip service to it, but the Greenporter takes it very seriously.

First, let me say that the room was fine, though it was just a bit odd to have the sleek 50s styling. The room came with safe and refrigerator. That was nice. But then the oddities. Face soap for both sink and shower. Shampoo and moisturizer but no conditioner. And no facial tissues in the room. When I brought the conditioner to the attention of the hostess, her response was that they furnish it upon request only, since they have found that most people don't use it. She also said that the tissue should have been in the room, but it had been made up twice by the time I spoke with her, and it had not been placed into the room by then.

We were there for two nights during the week just after the season ended; so we received neither continental breakfast nor access to the restaurant--which had a super menu, alas. We were sort of faked out, since when we made reservations for the hotel, we received a suggestion to make reservations for dinner. So when we arrived, we tried to do that, but were then told that the restaurant was closed.

Stayed at the Greenporter 2 nights August 29 & 30. Loved it here for the proximity to town, sufficient parking, complimentary continental breakfast and heated pool. The bed was comfortable with a wide screen TV and a clean modern bathroom. The restaurant was also great. Enjoyed the overall vibe of the place. We'll be back again!
