I had to go to Staines on business, the company that I was visiting said that the Thames Lodge was the place to stay.
On the train journey into Staines I thought I saw the Thames Lodge, but thought that can't be it as it's so close to the railway line.
After a short walk from the station I asked directions and was pointed in the correct direction for the hotel.
At reception I found the door man and receptionist very welcoming and was looking forward to my stay.
I was shown to my room (no 69), which was in the old building by climbing some very narrow creaky stairs, once in my room I was overcome by the stink of cigarettes, so much so that I checked the bathroom to see if anyone was smoking in it, no it was empty.
I returned to reception with my cases and requested a no smoking room and was rather bluntly told that all the rooms are non smoking.
I returned to my room with my tail between my legs and decided to make the best of a bad job and have some food, this hotel has a chef to be proud of the fish and chips were the best I have ever tasted in a resturant with a splendid view of the Thames.
I returned to my room feeling a little happier now that I had eaten something so good, only to find the smell of cigarettes was worse than before, no I said to myself, I can't sleep with this stink, this time I was fortunate that a different person listened to my plea and let me change to room 80, right at the top of the hotel in an odd kind of atic room, the room did not stink and was clean enough but needs some serious sound proofing as it overlooks a main road with traffic lights directly below it and the planes from Heathrow pass directly over the hotel at different times of the night, the railway line was behind the bathroom, so not much of an issue.
On my second night I met a major celeb at the bar which was nice and had a better nights sleep than the first night.
To conclude, if I have to go to Staines again I think I'll try the travel lodge as this hotel is in the need of new windows, taps that don't fall off and no smoking ghosts in room 69.
