“Fantastic tented camp”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2013

This is an amazing place. The tents are spacious and comfortable with outside showers and a big bath inside. Meals are excellent and numerous, all cooked by the camp's chef and his colleagues, and the open bar is a bonus. The staff are endlessly helpful and sociable, so meals taken around a big table with guests, staff and guides, are a real pleasure. And there are more hours of games drives (morning, afternoon and night) than anyone could possibly wish for - lots to see and incredibly knowledgeable guides. For anyone who hasn't been on safari this would be a great introduction - but it might spoil you for anywhere else.

The Hide was one of three safaris during our vacation. Being our last lodge of the three we were ready to kick back a little more, relax and see some giraffes. This was the perfect location to unwind and soak up the luxuries. Our tent was gorgeous and the bath tub was a dream come true. We went on drives whenever we had the chance and also a walk one day. We witnessed two lions kill a buffalo right in front of during sun-downers. The food was five star, the beverage selection was also quite lovely... managed to get hooked on Savannah Dry during the stay. My fiance and I spent warm afternoons dipping into the pool, playing cards and chatting with other guests/staff... the common areas were in direct view of the watering hole and comfortable. The Hide is well Managed, has a very courteous staff and all the details were taken care of that you would ever wish for. We really enjoyed our stay!

Room Tip: They're all good!

The Hide provides what I have called a "5-star tent" lodging experience, with a big picture window overlooking a fantastic watering hole teeming with wildlife. Their food service is top notch, and the stay even includes an open bar but with limited selections. Of most importance is the quality of their guides and their ability to take you into the Hwange wilderness directly from their encampment. The Hide is located adjacent to and connecting with the National Park, and the animals wander into and out between their large property and the park. They offer all kinds of drives, morning, afternoon, evening, and even night. They have a tree stand, and if you are courageous enough, you can spend the night there but you cannot leave until they come and get you and the potty could be a problem. They also have underground viewing areas close to the watering hole and you can spend some time there. They are very safety conscious, and ensure that you are either enclosed somewhere or that an armed and trained person is with you.

Room Tip: The tents are the rooms, and they are all great locations fronting the watering hole

After 4 years I have returned to The Hide to many improvements, I was very pleased to see all the improvements from the propane heated showers, new bar to the redesign of the safari tents, this made a for an even better stay not to mention the food it was just 2 notches higher than my last visit. The game viewing and birding in Hwange Nat'l Park was excellent. The management team was excellent and Ian was very accommodating to all our needs. If you visit Hwange you must visit "The Hide" you won't be disappointed. I will be returning soon a must stay.

Room Tip: They are all good and set in a beautiful locaton

I had the pleasure of staying here recently with my boyfriend and some family visiting Zimbabwe.

The service here is impeccable - all the staff are friendly, professional and helpful. Nicholas was our guide for the two days and there wasn't a question he couldn't answer, he really made the game drives and walks something special. The location of the Hide is perfect and you can enjoy a g&t from the main tent before dinner or from your personal veranda in your tent. The watering hole attracts a steady stream of game (in dry season, I can't vouch for wet season), which you can experience from the two actual hides right by the pool.

The tents were beautiful, the outdoor shower and bath tub in the room were a lovely touch. On the second night my boyfriend and I stayed in the 'Dove's Nest', this is a treehouse in the bush - very romantic. The food in the Hide is also very good - the most memorable was the homemade blueberry ice-cream dusted with cinnamon, the chefs do a wonderful job.

I can't wait to go back some day, absolute luxury in one of the best parks in Zimbabwe.

WOW was my initial reaction as I walked into the "garden" of Tom's Little Hide. A buffalo was standing a few feet away the other side of a fence made of woven branches staring at me and the family and behind it was a whole herd consisting of over 200 buffalo. The view stopped me in my tracks and we had many more similar experiences during our stay. We had chosen The Hide as part of our 40th wedding anniversary celebrations taking with us our children aged 27 to 32. No one was disappointed with the choice. Basically we concur with all the good reviews written about The Hide. Tom's Little Hide is a house on the camp which you can book to include your own ranger and chef and what a good decision it was to have done so. Ian was an exceptional host and guide becoming one of our gang and inspiring our daughter to go on game walks because she had so much trust in his skills. He caught on to our sense of humour!! Every day was fun and we were never disappointed on our game drives - one night we came across 200 buffalo so Ian turned the jeep off and the lights off so we were watching the stars and listening to the buffalo go chomp, chomp (eating) - click, click (moving). Ian explained that the buffalo hoof is in two parts so the herd knows where to go in the dark by listening for that sound from the other buffalos. Unforgettable. As was our experience in the hide itself - we had two hours which for the first hour was not remarkable for animal sightings as the animals that came drank on the opposite side of the waterhole but then the elephants came and made the experience different again by coming so close to the entrance and viewing window that we thought they were going to join us. Amon our personal chef is a treasure. Every meal was brilliant and he catered for my gluten free diet exceptionally well. Thank you to everyone for making our celebratory holiday so special - an experience we would not hesitate to repeat

Room Tip: Any tent would be a good choice!

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciatin to all the team at The Hide who contributed to give my boyfriend and I, one of the best holiday experiences we have ever had. We have not stopped talking about our time at The Hide.

All of the team individually and separately, made our time at The Hide memorable. So many happy memories. Their care and attention to detail throughout our stay was appreciated. Their professional, yet personal touch, so good! Simple thing , like walking us to and from our tent on an evening; practical but pleasant!

The guide team were kind, informative, generous and so helpful. Special thanks to Nkosi for the informative and interesting night drives, very special. Thanks to Peter for sharing his vast knowledge and experiences of the Zimbabwean bush, its flora, fauna and game, with us. And being so so entertaining, too. All the guides' attentiveness to ensure we managed to partake of all the activities, including an afternoon in the hide. And their openness and friendliness at all times.

Thanks to Peter for talking to me at length about "The Friends of Hwange Association" and the work The Hide and its counterparts do to maintain the watering holes in the National Park. Piqued my interest to be involved.

Of course, not to forget the chefs and waiting staff, who prepared, presented and served us a lovely tasty, varied menu selection for all our meals. Some of the best scrambled egg I have had the pleasure to eat! The waiting staff were polite and helpful at all times.

Never forgetting the special homemade picnics and savoury treats we got on our various activities. We still speak of the amazing spicy chicken pies, we had as part of our picnic lunch, watching a wonderful array of game at the watering hole, en route to The Hide from Hwange Main camp on our first day. What a welcome.

Additionally, the housekeeping team who ensured our accommodation was immaculate at all times. And the hand washed laundry returned beautifully pressed in a hand-woven presentation basket, with a local trinket, plus personalised note on top. Such attention to detail and care with presentation made for a lovely welcome back to our tent at all times.

Last but not least, warm acknowledgment to Katie and Lindsey, the front of house team, who were always pleasant and cheerful, and happy to help with all requests. Plus just happy to chat..

Highlight of the stay was the spacious bathroom area - bathtub and shower under the open skies! Best experience ever! Watching the elephant herd in the watering hole as you bath/shower.. Such fun!!

The Hide is a stunning property, but made so so much more by the whole team who work so hard to ensure we had an amazing stay. And we did have an unforgettable break.

Room Tip: Pay a little more and get a deluxe luxury tent = spacious bathroom area with shower and large clay f...
