“Excellent Stop off from the Sahara Desert Tour!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2012

Great Hotel, just the place to be when your doing the sahara tour, good food, great rooms, absolutely fantastic location. Its a shame we could not stay here for another 2-3 days.!

Great Staff, attended straight away to my wife, who had an accident at the hotel we were staying. They changed her bandage and looked after my wife!

Thank you!

Like most others we stayed here on a 1 night stay during the 2 day Sahara Excursion.
On arrival the hotel is impressive both outside and inside. We had a nice spacious comfy room with aircon.
There are 2 pools an outdoor one which is not tiled but has a some sort of rubber/plastic for the base which was coming away but did not affect the pool at all, the 2nd pool is an indoor Sulphur pool which was Hot! It did not look appealing with its brown colour but is nice when you get in it.
The grounds to the hotel are well kept.
Cannot fault the food, the evening buffet had a bit for everybody and was warm.

Al in all it was great for a whirlwind visit

We stayed at this hotel for one night as part of a Sahara trip. It was beautifully decorated on the inside and out with an amazing entrance hall.
We were all hot and sticky after a camel ride across the Sahara so welcomed the dip in the hotel's two pools. The outdoor pool had a few loose tiles around the edge that could be dangerous and a lot of dead bugs floating, but the indoor pool was amazing. The water was natural spring water and although it didn't look nice (brown) it was gorgeous, red hot.
Food was alright but not a lot of choice and meat was over cooked. Pizza was nice and lots of cakes for dessert.
The room and bathroom were both beautiful and clean. Lovely powerful shower.
We had breakfast on the morning which was average. Guess I just missed my English fry ups.

We stayed here during a two day trip to the Sahara desert. The hotel had an impressive entrance hall with nice lounge area. The outside pool was ok however surprisingly instead of tiles it was made of Lino! Felt this was a cost cut too far. Also plenty of dead bugs floating around. The surrounding tiled floor around the pool needs some attention as a lot of tiles are uneven, smashed or missing. This could be a lovely pool area with some work and TLC. The room was basic but comfortable contains double bed, tv, wardrobe and bathroom. The bathroom however again had some smashed and uneven tiles and the shower was only fixed half way up the wall so you couldn't have a proper shower without taking the shower head off, just small things but if corrected would make a big difference. The evening meal again was ok. Consisted of a buffet style dinner with all the usuals, salad, chicken, rice, pasta, chips, vegetables etc. The breakfast again was buffet which was slightly disappointing as there wasn't much to chose from but this may have been because we were having breakfast early at 5oclock to allow for an early departure. Overall an ok hotel but needs a little work to make it more comfortable.

....as the bar staff tried to con us into believing that we paid them with a bulgarian note instead of tunisian, which in the end did not work out very well for them. It goes like this: You order drinks at your table, when they serve the drinks you give them money, they come back 5 minutes later showing you (in our case) a bulgarian note saying you gave this to them by mistake. My friend fell for this at first, thinking someone else previously tricked him into accepting it. It only dawned on me 15 minutes later, that I actually saw the exchange and suddenly remembered that I clearly saw my friend giving two identical tunisian notes to the barman. My friend flipped a little when we realised, we went back in and he approached one of the two who served us, saying: Where is your friend? The guy immediately realised that we're on to them, found the other guy who then gave us our money back. One of the excuses was that they don't make much money, so they try this sort of stuff. We did not report them to the reception even though we felt very angry, but we also felt kind of sorry for them, and didn't want them to lose their jobs because of this and what have ya.....

The food in our 3 star PEK resort hotel was also much better than here. We had booked this place ourselves and their website prices are lower (and somewhat ambiguous) than what they want to charge when you get here. I did raise this issue however and got some money taken off the bill. All in all, you get what I would call a tunisian treatment here and everywhere, they think you are wealthy and dumb, and they'll try to trick you or hassle you everywhere you go. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, perhaps the nicest one I've ever been in, so for me the enjoyment of spending a day in a place this, overlooking the famous Sahara desert was in a way difficult to spoil......

We stayed here for one night after going on the 2 day trip to the sahara desert, nothing bad to say about this place, as we were only here for the evening meal, and early breakfast next morning.
After travelling for a full day it was a delight to stay in such a lovely place, better than i thought it would be, lavish reception and bar areas etc, rooms basic but spotless clean, great buffet dinner, and breakfast overall 10/10 for us.

(ps) some people moan about everything just been reading a few reviews on this hotel and others, i think some people should get a life !!!!!!

I stayed at the Sahara Douz Hotel with my wife for one night as part of a two-day excursion from Yasmine Hammament to the Sahara Desert. The hotel was sold to us as the only four star hotel in Douz. Perhaps this lack of competition explains, to some extent, the quality of our stay.

The hotel was obviously built to cater for the top end of the market. The public areas are lavishly decorated, the indoor and outdoor bar areas are relaxing and plush, there is an outdoor pool and an indoor sulphur pool, and the décor in the bedrooms is very nice and tastefully done.

Sadly, the whole experience of the hotel is let down by the food, staff, and maintenance.

The food – we had dinner and breakfast included in the price of our trip. These were both buffet style options, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but the food was bland and uninspiring. After a full day on the road in a coach, some decent food would re-energised us for the next day. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case.

The staff – Staff at the hotel gave the impression that they really did not want to be there. Two specific instances stand out. The first was in the restaurant at dinner. We had ordered drinks with our meal (which weren’t inclusive). While we were still eating we were hounded to make payment for the drinks. We said we’d pay after we had finished eating, and once we’d finished we approached the bar, whereupon we were promptly ignored. The second is when I tried to book a wake-up call. On the first attempt, nobody picked up the telephone. When I eventually got through, the receptionist was despondent and did not acknowledge my request, meaning that I was not confident by any stretch of the imagination that the wake-up call had been booked as requested.

Maintenance –time has taken its toll on this hotel. As an example, the bathroom was clearly designed to be the epitome of luxury. Double shower, high-end toiletries, the works. But sadly one of the soap dispensers was out of soap, and the towel rail was hanging off the wall. Both so easily fixed, yet detract so much from the quality of the hotel.

It’s not all doom and gloom. The sulphur pool is simultaneously energising and relaxing, the location is perfect as a base for exploring the south of Tunisia, the shower powerful and the bed comfortable. It’s just such a shame that the staff, food and maintenance issues let down an otherwise lovely hotel.
