“Worst treatment ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed February 29, 2008

The hotel in itself is ok. The sorroundings (the hotel is on the desert's boundaries) are really nice. These are the good things; but then come the bad news:

- when we arrived they told us they did not have our reservations. Anyway, we had booked the stay through an online agency so everything should have been alright, and even when we showed them the receipt, they wanted us to pay the full amount for the stay _before_ checking in! We had to tell them we would have gone to the police before they decided to contact the agency and solve the problem.

- after checking in they told us that they had already reserved us a table at the hotel's restaurant and that we had to show up for dinner at 8pm. But they didn't tell us that they were going to charge us for that! Even the following day, when we checked out, everything seemed to be ok. But when we got back home we received a minatory mail telling us that we left without paying and that they were going to charge our credit card 190 euros (and that for 3 pesons!!! 190 euros??? In Tunisia!!! What's the food made of? Gold???). And that's exactly what they did!

Would I recommend this hotel? Yeah, sure, why not???

Ok, I'm giving this place an "excellent" rating, but please read on before you go there.

This hotel exists for one reason only: it's right on the edge of the Sahara, and serves as a base for those wanting to take a camel ride or 4X4 trip into the desert. Attached to the hotel is a travel agency called "Agence La Mer Des Sables" which can help you arrange a trip, and also book the hotel.

The hotel itself is a one-star affair with somewhat grubby motel-like rooms. Our rooms were large enough, the toilets worked and the beds were clean. The A/C did not get cold (we didn't complain because it was not very hot when we were there) and the shower didn't get hot. No credit cards are accepted.

The meals in the attached restaurant were very simple but good. The hotel bar serves Tunisian wine and beer at reasonable prices. There's even an unheated swimming pool.

We spent one night in the desert at an oasis camp which was about a 90 minute camel ride from the hotel. I highly recommend this excursion which was inexpensive and a great way to have your first try on a camel. The camp was comfortable with cots and blankets in Bedouin-style tents and the meal was simple but good. The sand dunes surrounding the oasis are fantastic.

The clientele here is almost entirely French, and not much English is spoken, but we got along ok and the people were very friendly. The nearby town of Douz has an interesting market, banks/ATMs and a couple other restaurant choices. The actual town of Zaafrane has zilch other than the hotel.

Check out the pictures I posted, and go here if you don't need luxury, but want to experience a bit of the Sahara. I'm including my email. In case you want more info, I would be happy to help.
