“Atmosphere Top Notch, Food Mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2004

Chose Geneva on the Lake for our anniversary dinner. The grounds of the resort are stunning and we felt welcomed to enjoy our bottle of champagne overlooking the lake on a glider swing prior to dinner. The inn itself was not very inviting; as visiting dining guests, you felt unwelcomed in common areas. We would have liked to walk around a bit indoors and check it out for future local getaway weekends but it was so cramped and, as I mentioned, just uninviting. We dined outdoors (beware- indoors dining room is very small) at the best table with an awesome view. Our waitress was pleasant and competent however we observed clumsy, somewhat novice service by other very young waitstaff at neighboring tables. Very disturbing was the lack of cleanliness of waitress uniforms.... food stains, powdery white substance...blah! The cuisine was less than stellar taking into the consideration the high prices, which we don't mind paying for great food. The filet was very small and a little bland. The potatoes and fesh vegetables were sparce. We enjoyed a large quantity of delicious bread. We appreciated a small portion of an appetizer not stated on the menu compiments of the chef in honor of our anniversary; a very nice gesture. Live music and a gorgeous evening outdoors made up for the food so we did bot complain. The manager visited our table and was very friendly and gracious. This is a romantic place; perhaps the food is better certain days of the week.

Had dinner there recently. We arrived@9:30pm. Even though we were practically alone, the service was abysmally slow. The food, however, was great. It blew away the food at Bellehurst. Go for the food, beware the service.

Spent 2 days at the Finger Lakes region and stayed at Geneva on the Lake. Wonderful, wonderful, resort and grounds. Beautiful swimming pool--- would've been great except it rained constantly the whole visit and we couldn't enjoy a swim. The staff is super attentive and really make you feel welcome. Nice touches like fruit baskets and complementary wine make your stay an enjoyable one. I would very much like to stay again and would encourage others to stay here when in the Finger Lakes area.

We stayed there during July 4th Weekend. The resort is fabulous. We had a wonderful time exploring the area, including the Gorge at Watkins Glen State Park (its a great hike!), the Corning Glass Mueseum, the Rockwell Mueseum (not so great) and good ol' fashioned BBQ at the July 4th festival in Watkins Glen. The area is wonderful and the people are extraordinarily friendly.

Our only problem was the food. The Lancaster room is quite pretty but the food is hit or miss at times (e.g. great lamb; poor beef). Also, the wait staff is quite young and lacks experience. Belhurst Castle had better food (not great, though) and the wait staff was considerably more experienced and attentive.

Overall, I would recommend Geneva on the Lake for the sheer beauty of the resort (you feel like Gatsby) and the rooms; although the food did not live up to expectations.

I booked a Valentine's Day package at the resort and it was worth every penny! The package included a gorgeously-appointed suite with fresh roses, wine, and fruit, as well as a full gormet dinner and breakfast, which were both superb! The banana's Foster alone is enticing enough to make the trip again! Although the winter is not the peak tourist season in the Finger Lakes, the resort was still lovely and we enjoyed a busy day of shopping and another day meandering through the wine trail. Very romantic!

This hotel was fabulous in every way- the staff was wonderful, food was spectacular as was the wine list and the accomodations couldn't have been nicer. Rooms are beautifully done with Stickley furniture and many of the suites can accomodate 4 adults very comfortably, with a bed for everyone and plenty or room. Many suites also have their own fully equipped kitchen so you can eat in if you like. Would be perfect for a family reunion or wedding.

The grounds are truly spectacular- it is great to get up on a chilly morning and take a long walk around the grounds, look out over the lake. You almost feel like you live in this beautiful old home.

Please note that I have travelled extensively in the US and Europe so I have many fine hotels and restaurants to compare with Geneva on the Lake, and it still comes out on the top of the heap. This hotel and restaurant get my highest recommendation. I am planning on going back next year. The only downside I can see is that there are lots of stairs to some of the rooms and no elevators. This made the hike up to our room a bit difficult for me with an artifical hip, but I would still go back- I will just get a ground floor room next time.
