Owner description: Experience a taste of life on a 19th-century estate when you visit this National Historic Landmark. Once a working farm, the house and surrounding grounds are now open seasonally for guided tours. Built in 1839, the elegant Greek Revival house was the center of a busy and productive farm by mid-century. Much of the tour focuses on the Swan family, in residence from 1850 to 1890. Through family letters, photographs, and diaries, explore the family's joys and sorrows and their interactions with neighbors and the many workers required to keep the large house and farm in working order. Trained as a merchant, discover how Robert Swan combined business methods of organization with scientific innovations like drain tile to make his farm more productive and profitable. See twenty rooms restored and furnished in the Empire style, popular from the 1820s to 1850s. Enjoy the magnificent view of Seneca Lake from the front porch and the vista of nearby farmlands.Rose Hill Mansion Gift Shop features a selection of locally produced food products, historically themed gifts and hand crafted items. Be sure to visit the tasting room Billsboro Winery operates on site.Open May 1 to October 31. Tuesday-Saturday, 10am-4pm; Sunday, 1-5pm. Closed Mondays.

“Interesting Look into the Past”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

Interesting story of a house passing from one family to another over time, with a happy ending when a son bought back the house and gave it to the Historical Society. Many original furnishings and a glimpse into life as it was for those who were well-to-do long ago. There's a good chance you could have a private tour and, if you like historical houses, it's an entertaining hour or so for very little money. The tour was great -- the volunteer was very knowledgeable. Worth seeing.

We had an excellent time here. The guide was very informative and knowledgeable. It was fascinating to learn the history of the mansion and the area. It was well worth the price.

“Historical Gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This mansion is so beautifully situated overlooking Seneca lake on a high bluff. The importance of the preservation of this house is to inform visitors how the surrounding lands were farmed and cultivated. The owners had come from NYC to gain health for their families, bringing slaves, technology and prosperity to upstate New York. The historians that relate the stories as they walk you from room to room , recreate what life was like in the 1800's. Not to miss, this is memorable mansion.

“Entertaining tour of the past”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

We very much enjoyed our tour, our guide John was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. From an antique car to crystal chandeliers, they have an amazing collection of furniture, paintings and household possessions, original to the founding families and the area. Rich in the history of the 1850's. We also enjoyed the gift shop, and were provided with complimentary coupons to the adjacent Billsboro wine tasting. Very enjoyable visit.

“Comands views of Seneca Lake”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

We were there about 5 years ago when the Really Old Antique Cars stopped there for a brief car show..... These cars are the kind that run on steam etc. and have the brass gas pedals and wooden spokes etc. The drivers and passengers wore period clothing to match the car that they were driving. What a grand experience! We never toured the Mansion but intend to do so in the future.
