Here in Orange County, NY in a small town, an unpretentious place has some of the best mexican food that I've eaten outside of my San Antonio home. This place looks like nothing from the outside and not much more on the inside, but what comes out of the kitchen more than makes up for the superficial looks. The usual mexican fare is far better than expected, tacos, burritos made with pulled beef, not ground meat, the tamales, the enchiladas, even the chiles Rellenos all as good as any I've had. The owner is very accomodating. Although the combination plate my partner selected came with two items made with cheese, when he said he disliked cheese, the owner quickly responded with "would you like chicken or beef instead?". I told him I could only have items made with corn tortillas, he said "we will make you anything you want with corn tortillas." The restaurant has a full bar and makes all the usual drinks, but if you just want water, no one minds. This was our first visit to El Azteca, but we expect to become regulars there.
Keep in mind that the restaurant does not take reservations and Friday and Saturday night can get quite crowded. The restaurant does do take-out, but not delivery (boo-hoo). All credit cards are accepted.
