“Great family fun!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

Take the Sayville Ferry at the end of Foster Ave in Sayville to a nice family beach. Walk through the Sunken Forest and be enchanted. There is a concession stand for snacks or save money and bring your own. If you have a boat you can anchor off shore or pay to dock at the bay side and walk to the ocean. Enjoyable fun for the entire family.

“Great Place to Spend a Weekend on your Boat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2013

We spent many weekends here when we had our boat that we sold last year. It has a great beach and you can walk to Cherry Grove if you need to do any shopping. There is also a Ferry service to bring day trippers over and back. You would have to check as to were to get the ferry over there because I'm not sure and don't want to steer anyone wrong.

“Sailor's Haven and Sunken Forest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

I visited Sailor's Haven and Sunken Forest yesterday. What a beautiful place to visit and spend a whole day just exploring the area - especially this time of year in late September when the weather is cooler yet the sun still feels warm. I even went swimming in the ocean - water temp is getting cooler obviously - but it was still enjoyable and not teeth chattering. Although the rip current was pretty strong I went swimming anyway - Im pretty familiar with the behavior of these currents. I enjoy the current taking me "westward" along the shore at a 3-5 mph clip as you just float along. Gotta know what youre doing otherwise stay out of the water if youre inexperienced. The ocean will sweep you out a hundred yards away from the beach in a minute if youre not careful and then youre in trouble.
Anyway, it was relaxing just to walk along the meandering wooden path laid out in the Sunken Forest; the trees and plants provide a nice canopy and shade from the sun as you walk along the path. I'm not sure I would do this in July or August in the brutal heat. Sailors Haven on the bay side is nice too as it provides restrooms, showers, a concession stand, beach area with picnic tables and bbq area. Nice place to chill if you own a boat. The ferry from Sayville is obviously the best and cheapest option at $13 per adult roundtrip and $7.50 for kids under 11. Great day for the whole family if you enjoy the beach and enjoy nature walks.

“Take the ferry from Sayville”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2013

Taking the ferry to this oceanfront park gives you two great attractions. The 25 minute ferry ride itself is great fun. Sit up top and enjoy the sun and sea breeze as you cross the Great South Bay. (Ferry is about $13 a person and car parking across the street is about $10.)
Sailors Haven is a wonderful ocean beach. it's about a 1/4 mile walk on the boardwalk to get there. There is also a great nature walk through the sunken forest, an amazing forest that has grown below the dunes. Bring comfortabe walking shoes for that boardwalk. There isn't much food at this park, so many bring a picnic lunch. Bathrooms include showers to rinse off the salt and sand.
