“Nice, well-kept beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

I love Rockaway Beach because it's well-kept compared to other NYC beaches. There are plenty of bathrooms every several blocks (clean bathrooms, too), and plenty of nice restaurants and food shacks right along the beach. Yes, it's NYC, so the water isn't going to be free of potato chip bags and whatnot, but for the most part, it wasn't as gross as Coney Island, and it wasn't as crowded as Jacob Riis, and it's not as far away as Jones or Long Beach. And it has clean bathrooms.

“Not as good as the Ramones song”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

While certainly original to find a beach in a heavy urban area, original does not necessarily equate to enjoyable to visit. Good luck with parking and with finding your car still around if you do find a space. While long, the beach crowds are thick throughout the length. Rules about where to swim or boogie board seem arbitrary and hard to follow. It may not be far or hard to reach, Joey Ramone but it's not much fun.

“Rockaway Beach is for Fun, Families and Friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2013

Folks, I will be honest with you, Rockaway Beach is not for everyone. It's a mixed bag, which is why it is currently under revitalization program started by Mayor Bloomberg. Having said that, there is a reason that the program got started in the first place. Timeless things are the ocean, the sand, the sun and above all the air, which hits you with rich ozone as soon as you arrive. After the Hurricane Sandy a few entry points to the beach got improved, with new landscaping, cleaner bathrooms and nicer surfaces to sit and walk on. Of course we cannot wait for the whole boardwalk to be restored, to enjoy walking, biking, strolling and people watching. The ocean is quite clean, except for the stormy days, which can turn up sand and seaweeds. It takes a little getting used to, diving under the waves, as it is an open Atlantic out there, not a harbor. But those waves are a magnet for the young athletic crowd of city surfers, and several sections of the beach are officially designated for just that. So no need to travel far to get your thrill and chill. For families, there are small eateries right on the beach, but a picnic basket would be advisable, as prices quickly add up. Garbage disposal became better this year when the city added a few garbage cans on the beach, which tended to be few and far between. Still, if you think of yourself as a New Yorker, or simply a Citizen of the World, you would be wise to pick up your own garbage and take it home. It eases pollution, not only on the beach, but also on the bottom of the ocean, which is a very big issue for all of us. The beach is lacking in variety of places to eat and to stay overnight, though. Hardly any hotels or motels here, much less decent quality restaurants. But it is not entirely devoid of good eateries, which other reviewers noted. There is however a well stocked supermarket Stop and Shop at Beach 73rd Street, so you can pick up your food supplies and drinks there. Locals are a mixed bag. Many are residents of public housing projects, I.e. fairly poor, but some come from the up and coming neighborhoods of the city and from the brand new residential development Arverne By The Sea. You can see their advertising on the beach. Once the development is completed there will be a brand new YMCA with aquatic park for year round enjoyment, and a series of boutiques, cafes, restaurants and shops in the planned Tides community. Currently it is undergoing ground improvements to raise it above sea level, so hang in there. If you are on the market for a new home, values at ABTS cannot be beat, considering tax abatements, three months a year free beach access and proximity to NYC by the subway. This is what we did, and cannot be happier. Perfect for families, the young, the empty nesters, singles and retirees. Come visit and enjoy!

“Rockaway Beach is my choice of beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2013

Go there every week-end during the summer....so close to home, free parking...we get there early & leave by 1:00pm as that's when it gets very crowded....very glad to see this beach is up & running it was devastated by SANDY......I've met some wonderful people through the years @ Rockaway beach & have remained friends.....I look forward to relaxing on this beautiful shoreline & dipping in the ocean.....they fixed up the Food & restroom areas very nicely......

I didn't expect a lot and it wasn't a disappointment. If you're in a city sightseeing tour in New York but you want to spend a day on the beach it's a good place but not for more!
The water is great and salty (what a surprise!) but you can't relax because a lot of plane will interrupt the silence.
