“Buyer beware”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

As someone who grow up with Indonesian food and eat padang food wherever I travel in Indonesia, certainly the food in Upi Jaya is not up to par.

The service was bad and expects high tip.

Location is okay as it is only few blocks away from 64th station on 7 train.

The server keep talking to herself aloud.

But she was kind hearted otherwise.

“Indonesian Subtlety”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 25, 2013

What may be missing in ambiance and comfort is more than made up for by the depth of the sauces, the complexity of the curries and the originality of tastes. Having visited several times, I can safely say I have tried over 50% of the menu and while certain things may appear overcooked (lamb), the beef curry really was deep and tasty. Portions are not huge, but prices are nice and low too, so no cause for complaint. I need more "rendang" to deliver a final verdict, but basically the dish passes muster. Leave preconceptions behind, ask for help if necessary and try at least a couple of dishes. The satays are excellent, the jasmine rice fragrant and the spices lead you on a journey of discovery for your future role as an expert Asian diner.

“Jakarta In Elmhurst”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2012

We recently had lunch at Upi Jaya with a group of Indonesian friends who live in the area. Upi Jaya features authentic Indonesian Cuisine and the restaurant is primarily frequented by Asian clientele who find home cooked dishes from their part of the world. A group of Malaysian diplomats were having lunch during my recent visit.

Upi Jaya is not a fancy restaurant, as it resembles a place you would eat at in Indonesia. I've traveled to Indonesia several times and Upi Jaya looks like it was transplanted from downtown Jakarta. There is an extensive menu that lists most of the classics of the southeastern Asian cuisine and everything we ordered was delicious and portions were generous. Prices were reasonable, though be forewarned, this is a cash only restaurant, no credit cards. They also offer a take out menu with free delivery on orders totaling more than $15.00. There are only a handful of Indonesian restaurants in the New York area. If you're looking for the real thing, give Upi Jaya a try.

“A homestyle Indonesian eating experience...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2012

When you go there, everyone in the restaurant is Indonesian or Asian. A good sign as it seems like there was a lot of comfort food on the menu and everyone in the small restaurant was happily eating for a very reasonable amount. We had gado gado and vegetables, some tasty tofu and peanut entree, a beef dish, rice and some succulent chicken sate with a lovely side sauce. The sweet iced jasmine tea was delicious and the three of were very full for $40 including tip. Easy to get to, as it is about an 10 minute walk from Roosevelt Avenue and 74th Street. Nothing fancy but who eats decor anyway? I can't wait to go back when I am in New York next!

“Amazing Indo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2009

My wife is from Amsterdam, which is known for having some amazing Indo cuisine. I can say this is the most authentic and tasty Indonesian food I've ever had. We traveled from Brooklyn to get there and it was well worth the trip. Definitely going back!

1 app, 2 entrees, 1 dessert = $22
