“New York's best kept secret”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Centrally located near La Guardia airport, and a few streets away from the subway, this hotel represents exceptional value. There are many eating options in the local area. The staff were exceptional, especially the bell hop with left luggage. The rooms were clean and spacious. We originally booked the hotel as we had an early flight from La Guardia. I would stay again.

Employees of the hotel are kind and helpfull. However, this hotel is quite old and unpleasant. Stained sheets and a moldy bathroom is not something you expect for this price. The hotel is quite far from Manhattan by subway.

I am gratified to know that your interaction with our staff was courteous and professional. While we are located on Queens Boulevard, a car ride to midtown could be as short as 15 minutes and the bus route over the Koch Bridge is just a bit longer. A majority of our guests utilize the subway and find it to be a convenient and safe way to get to all parts of the city. Subway maps are available from the Bell Concierge.

This is a very old hotel that has been renovated several times over the past years (centeries!) in the New York tradition of paint and walpaper over everything and no one will notice the garbage underneath. The web site photos and description are completely misleading. I booked by phone and was promissed a discount but on arrival the discount was refused. I ended up paying $186.00 for a quick overnight when I could have gone to a Marriott for a few bucks more. The hotel is located in Queens and is a long way from LaGuardia airport. In addition, the neighborhood is a bit dodgy with mostly tire changing shops around, No where to eat except McDonalds across the street (very dirty as well in keeping with the neighborhood). There is a restaurant in the hotel, but you would not want to eat anything there at all. To top it off, the staff (except for the bus driver) are very mean and miserable.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms.

We regret that your one night stay with us was not satisfactory but can assure you that refurbishings have been done sooner than the last century. Apologies for any miscommunications regarding discounts. Stardard procedure would have noted any type of discount or upgrade in your reservation file on our computer and applied at check in. Likewise, just to address your comments about lack of restaurants, this area is frequently the subject of innumerable articles in the New York Times, New York Magazine and shows on the Food Network for the unique variety of international restaurants that are situated locally in addtion to more common Diners, Steakhouses and Fast Food places all within a short walk. As yu simply overnighted with us, I am sorry you were not made aware of these offerings.

I was looking for something simple since I was going on a budget. I needed a place to spend the night, have a nice meal, and get a hot shower. It serves the purpose and the employees were really nice during my stay. Don't go if you're looking for some lavish hotel experience. I honestly think that the hotel room is the last place I'm going to be found at when going to NYC!!!!

We truly appreciate your great review and 5 Star ratings on hotel cleanliness, confort and services. Just to clarify further, apart from the easy access to public transport (bus and subway) our Bell Concierge arranges Full Day Tours of New York City by Bus. These vehicles both pick up and drop off at the Hotel and are great option for those guests who have less time. Thank you for sharing your comments with this websites visitors.

This hotel is in need of and update but is clean and close enough to were I needed to be. The cleaning ladies are honest and do a good job. That was the good part. Now for the rest. They have a night club down stairs and a night club directly across the street that does not close until 3am. The music came right into our room as we were facing the blvd. When we finally did get to sleep the sun was up and coming into our room. The curtains did not close all the way. The food in the restrant downstairs is only OK and over priced. Walk down the street a bit and go to Pop's diner instead. When we did ask for a taxi to take us into Manhattan to visit family they did get us one who charged $40. We were overcharged. We didn't realize this at first since we are not from NY. We took a taxi back from Manhatan and it was $24. I didn't think to much at first since we had come back from a different location. We asked for a taxi again and we were charged $35 to my familys house. A taxi on the way back from his place was $26. That is when I realized we were being screwd over. They did not call a taxi, they call a car service. It seemed very shady to me. I will ever stay here again. Everywhere else I have stayed has always looked out for the guest not tried to screw them over.

Room Tip: Stay at a different hotel.

Thirty minutes away from JFK and a couple of shopping malls in the area. Pros: fast check in and check out, cheap shuttle to airport ($10 per person), comfortable rooms and bathroom, free internet access in lobby (slow), good breakfast restaurant. Cons: 10 blocks from Metro Station, not up kept (but clean).

I stayed at the Pan American for 14 nights in November 2012 and would seriously consider in-depth whether to stay there again, mainly for the following reasons.
The Reception area is the best part of the Hotel, on our arrival the desk clerk was miserable and difd not smile once or even make eye contact or conversation with us except for Name and room number.
The rooms are very dated from the 80's even down to the Hoover which is used to clean the carpet. the bath has a permanent stain within. The rooms are cleaned daily but still does not change the appearance of the outdated decor.
On two occassion my colleague has received bites during the night, i have received several bites and on my return yo London they became more prominent and i had to visit my doctor to get treatment.
Positive - The Location of the Hotel is very close to the subway which takes us into Manhattan, and very close to a large shopping mall/food hall.
Two of the staff in the restaurant (Ladies) were very friendly and always helpful, however we found its cheaper to eat outside of the Hotel.
When I got out of the elevator to go to our room, the hallway smelled like damp, it was dark and dingy.
On the day of checkout (midday) our flight was not until late afternoon, were told we had to pay $1.00 per each piece of luggage to be looked after until our hotel transport was ready to take us to the Airport.
Tip - Never accept a room on the front of the hotel due to the Exoctica nightclub across the road, hence sleepless nights.
