“pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2013

I was in this hotel for business, one night only and despite the fact that its a little far away and in a secluded part, its a beautiful setting.
The Hotel is a nice old building, very traditional and very beautiful, with classic wooden bar and a great selection of whiskeys! ;)
The room was nice, cosy, and the heating was working and quick to make the room comfortable, and went interrupted all night long (I have stayed in places where the heating is turned off dunring the nights!). Tidy albeit a little bit tired.
Little details (like a shoe-polishing box and an extra blanket and duvet) were great details.
The service was good, the waitresses both at dinner and brakfast were not only nice but efficient and helpful despite the fact that was very busy.
Bed was comfy, nice pillows aswell, and the setting is a quiet place to sleep.
The only downside was the cricking floorboards and thin walls (we heard all what was going on in the neighbouring rooms! :P)
The food was very good, good value for money, fair priced.
At dinner the choices were very nice, uncomplicated but delicious food (my salmon in drambuie sauce was really tasty!) and good sized portions. For dessert dont miss the icecream served with baileys!!
Breakfast was all you would expect: great buffet and choices of juices (orange, grapefruit, apple...) and cereals. Coffee was ok but the tea was lovely! You also have a choice of porridge (which I didnt have) and the traditional scottish breakfast with toast and again a great choice of butter, spreads, marmalade, jams, etc.
It has a great setting, lovely views of the forth but as it is a rural setting the roads are a little bit dodgy to get there and some people just drive like mad!! hardly the fault of the hotel though.
Finally it has a lot of space for parking :) which is great.
For a weekend away, is a good choice.

I booked the Honeymoon room for our wedding night on 26th August 2006, I know its along time ago but have never forgot the fact they bouble booked the Honeymoon room on our wedding day, I payed a deposit to secure it and when we arrived we got told the room was gone, but the room we were given was just as good, but it wasnt! !!!!!!!!!! It was small and basic and had a great view of the roof, when we arrived the owner offered us a wedding drink to celebrate the day( kind of smooth over) and noticed the cheeky beggar put it on our bill, have left comments on Facebook in the past, and have no doubt the hotel has seen them, but not interested and no contact from them or a reply to comments. Dont know if the hotel is embarrased about it or not bothered?

Decided to go for Sunday lunch with my wife as the hotel is in a lovely spot. Was led to a corner table in a fairly quite restaurant and waited for the menu and waited and waited. Try to catch the waitresses eye but just ignored. New table of six came in - menus presented immediately and drinks order taken - still waiting for menu.
Decided enough was enough and spoke to one of the waitresses on our way out who responded that she was very busy and rushed off her feet!!!
Moral? Take your own menu, drinks and prepare to be ignored if larger table shows up.

Found the Elgin hotel through Booking.com and was not disappointed, arrived to be met with a smile and nice banter from the manager/ owner. He gave us a wee bit history on the place and pointed out some nice walks.
Our room had a lovely view over the Forth and although I would say a wee bit dated, it was clean and bed was comfy, had a tv and a lovely cosy feel on a cold night. We had dinner and it was lovely homely cooked food, well priced and service was quick.
Breakfast was served and cooked by a lovely lady who took time to ask us where we were from and chatted away, it's refreshing to get that nowadays as a lot of places don't have the homely feel.
We only live 30 mins away and will be back for sure.
If you want high class rooms then go and pay £150 somewhere but the Elgin Hotel had everything we needed and the price was amazing.

Room Tip: We picked the superior room simply for the sea view, was worth the extra £9

We were a party of five dining in the evening; one of us knew the Elgin Hotel previously, and had recommended the food to us. The approach to the hotel on a dark evening was very welcoming, with lots of lights blazing in the building. The food was excellent - we all had different dishes and were well pleased with them. Portions are plentiful. Service was attentive but not pushy. The menu is wide-ranging with something to suit every taste. Prices very reasonable. Ladies' toilets immaculate. Altogether a good experience for those of us there for the first time.

Out on a wee day trip with my parents and daughter we stopped at The Elgin for a spot of lunch. The staff were friendly and efficient. We had macaroni, lasagne, breaded haddock and goats cheese tart. We were all very happy with our choices. Can't comment on starters or desserts as we didn't have them but if they are same quality as the mains they will be good. All in all a really nice lunch experience.

Wonderful lunch with my parents in the hotel that we stayed in a year previously, soon after getting married. This is a lovely old hotel that gives you wonderful memories long after you've stayed there. It's not modern but it is full of charm and the staff are very helpful.
