“Perfect Choice for our relaxing Holiday...... with our baby....”
I recently returned to Kurumba for my third visit, however this was to be a completely different trip for us, due to the fact that we were taking our 18 week old daughter and therefore we saw the resort in a completely different light. Having visited before with my friend, then husband and family.... I knew that this would be a completely different trip, but thankfully Kurumba definitely did not disappoint!
We had booked one of the Family Villas so that there was more room for us, and were worried that we may miss being on the beachfront as these villas are slightly back into the island, with Gardens in front rather that the beach.....however I have to say that it did not affect our stay at all. The villas had recently been renovated to include a small pool in the back (as apposed to the jacuzzi that was there previously) and this turned out be be perfect for our needs. The weather whilst we were there was not perfect and there was quite a bit of rain in the evening, which is to be expected in October, however it was still very hot for our little girl......but having the pool to dunk in when she was getting uncomfortable was a lot easier than that trying to find shade on the beach, and the area outside the pool also gave us a bit more privacy for sunbathing (if/when the baby would give us the chance to soak it up!). The housekeeping staff were very attentive to our needs, and ensured that we had enough water every day as we were not only drinking it ourselves, but needed it for cleaning bottles, sterilising, and making up milk and food for the baby.
The staff were amazing towards the baby too..... they were delighted to see her when we visited the restaurants/bars and they even looked forward to getting a wee cuddle! The main buffet restaurant staff were very quick to let us know that if we needed anything special for the baby... just to let them know and they would arrange it for us, and our many trips with the microwave sterliser were treated with no issues at all. On that note, we had taken our steriliser with us, but learned when we were there that the resort actually has one for guests to use, as well as a bottle warmer.
The resort was perfect for taking the baby for walks in the buggy, as there are paths around the whole island, unlike some that only have sand paths to walk around. And if we needed to get out and about on the boats, then the Launch Crew were fantastic at taking the buggy on and off with the baby still inside, rather than having to disturb her everytime. She was very settled on the boats too.....even on a very rough transfer that made her laugh every time the boat jumped! The sea barriers around the island also made the lagoon very calm and perfect for taking her for a wee swim.
I know that a lot of people's concerns with Kurumba are the proximity to the airport and the boat traffic around the island as it is so close to the airport, however I found that this was perfect for us for a number of reasons. Firstly, after around 18 hours of travelling with a baby, the last thing we wanted to do was wait around in a hot and stuffy airport for a seaplane.... and instead were on the boat within 5 minutes of coming through the security, and in the pool in our room within the hour!! Also, having a small baby, it was a comfort to know that we were so close to Male and the hospitals... just in case! As for the air/boat traffic, it gave my dad (who probably isn't so good at being somewhere remote) something to look out for and have a look at, and it didn't bother me at all.
After meeting the GM at a "Guest Cocktails" evening, we got to talking about the environmental issues facing the Maldives at the moment, and he offered to show me what the resort were doing to try and tackle their waste on the island and took me to the island's new "Recycling Station" that has helped to reduce the waste on the island from around 7 dhonis a week, to 1. I found this fascinating as the rubbish island is something that we see a lot of on documentaries across here, and it is nice to see a resort that is taking the matter seriously!
As I mentioned earlier, the weather wasn't perfect whilst we were there, and it often rained in the evening/at night....however this did not affect our stay in the slightest. The only thing that the rain affected was being able to sit in the amazingly comfortable big lounge chairs on the veranda in the bar!! We still managed to get on excursions to see the Dolphins, my mum went on a couple of snorkelling trips, and mum and dad both went on a day trip to a sand bar which they absolutely loved (the only reason we couldn't go was that there is no shade on the sand bar and would be too hot for the baby), I did a couple of dives, and we got a lot of sun during the day! And when it did rain at night, there was still plenty of entertainment on the resort from movies, to music, so we were never bored.
I should probably stop now as I could write about the resort for pages......but I really would recommend Kurumba to anyone. There were quite a few children on the island whilst we were there, however I only know this because the staff told me........apart from our own daughter, I hardly say any children at all. Therefore I would say that the resort is perfect for families, but also Honeymooners, couples, friends......anyone that is travelling to the Maldives. We are looking forward to our fourth trip and hope it won't be too far away..... and I am sure that our daughter will love joining in the with childrens club the next time round!
