“Kurumba Resort - - - Magic”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

We visited Kurumba in 2009 and had been promising to return ever since. In Feb 2012 we were booked for 8 days in a Pool Villa and right from the start the "Kurumba Magic" was there. We were met at the airport exit door and escorted 150 metres to one of the resorts majestic air-conditioned speed boats for the 15 minute trip.
At the jetty on the resort the luggage was whisked away and we were given a ride on a golf buggy by "Vinny" to the pool villa (room 184). We had spent many hours sifting through the online pics but walking around the accommodation was impressive. The pinnacle though has to be the private walled enclosure. You walk out into the garden with its day bed, sun deck and outside shower (Sally's favourite). The wonderful swimming pool with its Jacuzzi and waterfall put the icing on the cake. The room boy "Liushan" kept all the accommodation spic and span during our visit.
We had booked the "Dine around all inclusive " (DAAI) package which meant we could eat in any of the 8 fabulous restaurants, our favourite being the "Ocean Grill". One of the great twists of the Pool Villa accommodation is that you get a champagne breakfast! Our first breakfast was made even better when we walked to the Ocean Grill and "Ali" greeted us, we had had many animated conversations with him on our last visit. It’s strange how you can get used to 3 glasses of champagne for breakfast! With the way the resort runs the various restaurants you really can eat whenever you want so any of the organised activities or your own schedule need not get in the way of food or drink.
The main bar is always a pleasure to visit with professional courteous staff who will never be far away as your glass gets empty. We liked to sit at the bar and watch "Anil" in particular mix all those wonderful cocktails and drinks. "Hillary" runs a tight ship with so much going on all at once; even so we would manage to pass the time of day with "Lalith" one of the staff.
New to us was the sand bar on the Western beach of the island the view at sunset was made all the more romantic by the great cocktails!
The Snorkelling is first class on the house reef and in the almost enclosed lagoon. So much to see that it’s worth buying a camera which can be used underwater.
We met "Jason" the resort manager on our first day and his work so far reflects his enthusiasm and vision for the resort. I'm sure it’s difficult to improve on paradise but that seems to be his goal.

All in all a fantastic holiday - - - would we go again? Already booked!!
Regards Mike & Sally

I went to Kurumba Maldives for my honeymoon after having read its reviews on Tripadvisor. We went over for a 4 day stay and it was the best stay we had in our life.
The resort is a 15 - 20 min boat ride from the Airport. I had requested the resort to arrange for an airport pickup and the yatch that they sent to pick us up was - fantastic. Probably we loved it a lot because we have never seen such hospitality - but I remember the look on my wife's face and I knew that I had made the correct booking.
If the boat trip was something to be happy about, the resort was even better. Our room was amazing. Not more than a 10 sec walk to the beach. The dining facilities were good. The staff was helpful. Don't want to give away anymore.
For anyone planning a honeymoon trip, this one definitely gets my strong vote.

PS: We went to Kurumba in Feb'11. However I am a bit late in writing this review.

My husband and I visited Kurumba, Maldives for our honeymoon recently. We are both around the age of 25, Indian and live in Perth, Australia. We arrive back a few days ago on the 11th March 2012. We only stayed for a week but it was one of the most amazing experience of our lives.

Vinay was wonderful in making us feel comfortable the second we arrived and ensured that our accomodation and experience was pleasant. We didn't have to wait very long to be given our room even though we arrived well before check-in, and while we were waiting were taken on a tour of the island.

The room that we chose was the private villa, it was right on the beach front and also had a small outdoor plunge pool/jacuzzi. The room was extremely spacious, and was in pristine condition. Our room was more than what we needed, but was a really nice retreat to come to after being out in the sun all day. Our outdoor alfresco area had a lovely area to also lounge on and on the beach we had our own 2 sunbeds and hut area which was great.

The ocean was surreal, beautiful turquoise water, and not rough at all. Not being strong swimmers both my husband and I appreciated the surrounding sea walls in the ocean, especially when we were snorkeling. There are some amazing corals and fishes to be seen in the waters.

Out of the restuarants, have to say the Ocean Grill was the most amazing food, although it did come with a slight price tag, their seafood dishes were to die for. We had our first champagne breakfast there and it was delicious, fresh juices, champagne and first class service. The other mornings we ate breakfast at Vihamana as this was a buffet, and more our style. Both were included in our package so we could have chosen either everymorning.

The kurumba cafe also has very tasty food, and is open all day and night which was perfect for us when we get hungry at any time of the day, they also serve to the poolside which is another plus, and delivery room service. We tried the Indian a couple of times this was yummy, but none of the other restaurants.

The beach bar is great! The decking sits on top of the ocean and you can see the fishes swimming around beneath you while you relax. They serve drinks all day long and I think by the time we left I tried every cocktail in the book. My favourite was the Irish Mint... mmmmmm!!! They do any drink you could possibly think off. We mostly drank when we were by the main pool area and when we went for the happy hour drinks between 6-7pm. The beach bar often had some sort of entertainment. One night the Maldivians did their traditional song and dance and played the drums, it was awesome!! Well done guys!! Another night a DJ came down and played some music, lots got up to dance as well that night, it was a great experience. The sand bar was on the other side of the island to where our villa was but it didn't bother us, was beautiful to go there when the sun set though.

Highly recommend the Sunset Dolphin Cruise, its a must! Also if you are not too much of a strong swimmer and want to try snorkelling try the tour from the water sports center, the guides are very friendly and help you to be comfortable in the water. They took underwater photos and videos for us too, memories we wouldnt have have been able to keep forever if we went alone.

The service at Kurumba was amazing, at the bar, the restaurants, and the room service. We particularly remember Akbal and Hillary at the beach bar, there are many others I can't remember their names, all remembered us each time they saw us they would wave and say hello and pop their heads round for a chat. All the staff were so friendly and approachable and go out of their way to ensure your stay is first class.

If I could I would come and stay at Kurumba all the time. Hopefully soon. This resort is amazing!!

Room Tip: Rooms facing away from Male are more private and quieter

My husband and I returned to Kurumba to celebrate my 50th Birthday - it was our third visit and we were not disappointed. Our private villa on the beach was perfect a few steps and into the sea. The choice of dining and quality of food is better than most other resorts we have visited. The staff cannot do enough for you and service is exceptional. I would have no hesitation in recommending Kurumba to anyone it is idylic perfect for relaxation - but plenty of water activities with snorkelling and diving if you want. It isn't the place to come if you like to be on the go and plenty of nightlife. Give it a go we will definitely return

Kurumba means Coconut and doesn't it roll of the tongue nicely? It is the first private resort that opened to tourists in the Maldives in the 1970's. The Design of the resort makes me think 'Zen' and 'Peaceful' and it may have been here for 40 years already, but there is nothing old about it. Kurumba has 180 rooms with 8 different styles to choose from.
At beach walking speed the island can be circumnavigated in 30 minutes. It is indeed surrounded by soft white sand and turquoise child friendly shallow water.

In amongst the plentiful flowers, shrubs and coconut palms the beautiful beach bungalows are hiding. My favourites are the Deluxe Bungalows right by the sea.

My husband and I came to Kurumba to celebrate my 40th birthday. We were very impressed with our beach bungalow and its location - just a few metres from the sea and close to the Sand Bar. We were very impressed with the choice of restaurants and ate in all of them as we paid for the Dine Around package which gave us the choice to eat in any restaurant. We particulary liked La Cucina and the Ocean Grill. All staff were very friendly and offered a high class service. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to any of our friends.

Kurumba celebrates its 40th birthday later this year and is the original Maldivian island resort. As a result, it doesn't suffer from some of the insecurities of some of its younger contemporaries that are trying to make their mark in an increasingly crowded market. Lonely Planet suggests that there will be 150 resorts in 2015, up from the current 90.

The warm and genuine welcome offered by staff to guests serves to create a friendly atmosphere on the island and amongst the guests themselves despite a wide range of cultural backgrounds. The friendliness of the staff was exceptional and they went beyond the call of duty to resolve a couple of issues we had during our holiday. No wonder so many guests are repeat visitors, despite the increasing number of alternatives!

The choice and quality at the buffet for breakfast and dinner was very good [if you make the most of breakfast, you don't need the full buffet lunch too!]. There are also other restaurants including Japanese, Italian, Middle Eastern and a grill. And even from my Italian wife, the pizzas are highly recommended, perhaps surprisingly so!

The only thing you need to get comfortable with when considering a holiday in Kurumba is its relative proximity to the airport and so yes, you can hear the big jets taking off, but that is 15 seconds, maybe 10 times a day and you soon get used to it. It really doesn't adversely affect your holiday but I think it's only fair to mention it. The fact that so many people are repeat visitors, especially having visited other islands, speaks for itself.

The rooms are well-appointed and the semi-open air bathroom arrangement works well. Of course the bathrooms are completely private.

The beach around the island is powdery white and the snorkelling is excellent within the reef. Needless to say, excursions are available to snorkel elsewhere.

Strongly recommended!
