“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2013

My girlfriend and I were cycling Lands End to John O'Groats and this was an ideal location for us on the way to Ardrossan. It was the best place we stayed the whole trip. The house and rooms are absolutely spotless and have been decorated and furnished to a very high standard. Karen couldn't do enough for us to make us feel welcome, rested and fully prepared for the next days cycle ride. If you are anywhere near and looking for a place to stay, this is the place to book.

My husband and I stayed for one night with our in-laws at The Knowe (pronounced The "Now") and I have to say it is one of the nicest places we have stayed in. The owners Harry and Karen are warm and friendly and make you feel very welcome and could not do enough for us. The house is beautifully furnished to extremely high standards, country cottage style but with all the mod cons you could want including flat screen internet TV's with wireless keyboards! The views from the front are just spectacular. The rooms were spotlessly clean and the bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was first class and Karen went our of her way to make sure I enjoyed my vegetarian option. Our stay was short but sweet, and we can't wait to return. First Class!!!!!

Gravel! Almost the same happened to us when we arrived. But we managed to handle the bike on the gravel because I had to pull it ;-) !
The welcome was like coming home. Karen and Harry are absolutely charming! The bedroom was excellent- different to the other rooms we have seen before: stylish, modern, ecxellent furnished and everywhere was a little touch of Scotland! We instantly decided to stay a second night and had a great time on the bike the next day.
The area is really great for both: riding and culture! Breakfast was great including the tasty food from the kitchen. And the dining-room is absolutely georgeous. Karen was helpful with all our needs and had always time for a little chat. Even if the next pub is about 8 miles away: We hope we will be back soon!

Room Tip: We loved Dumlanrig! Great view, georgeous interior, great bathroom. Really classy!!!

We were on a motorbike touring holiday and looking for places to stay on the Galloway Tourist trail when we came across The Knowe. I'm glad we stopped - we felt very welcome - as some bikers will know that's not always the case. As they weren't quite ready for us to unload, Karen suggested we travel along the road to the pub at Dalry and have a meal to give them a bit of time. Good suggestion, but that's another TripAdvisor story. (Point to watch as a biker - if you call in on spec, park on the path at the side of the drive as the drive is graveled. If you book in advance, let Karen know that you're on a bike and a paving slab is available!) When we returned we had had a wet journey day - our luggage wasn't exactly spotless and we weren't totally dry so a bit concerned that we'd mess up the carpets etc, but it wasn't a problem! Covers for the floor for luggage, a warm welcome, even somewhere to dry out our money! The whole house had only just been refurbished, so our room was immaculate and the bed was sooo comfortable. We had the room as a double, but the bed could be split to make two singles. After settling in, we made our choices for breakfast which could be from cereals, juices etc on the dining room sideboard or cooked from the kitchen - we went for the cooked and it was worth it! In all a very relaxing and brilliant place to stay.
