9/17/2012 We made our prepaid reservations several weeks ago, requesting a handicapped accessible room for an additional fee. Upon arrival we were kept waiting for over 30 minutes to check in. There were two large class reunions and a popular annual festival being held that weekend and only one desk clerk on duty! The guests in front of us in line were upset because they were paying cash for their rooms and the desk clerk informed them that their room fees were going to be deducted from their debit cards and the funds would be held for 10 days. Finally, we were informed by the desk clerk that the hotel DID NOT have accessible rooms and if we wanted a different room we would have to pay an additional fee for a suite (which was not accessible!). We were assigned to a room across from the hotel laundry (which was smelly) and next to the elevator (which was also noisy). The carpet outside our room had a large bleach stain. The carpet in our room was stained. The carpet baseboard had fallen off the wall and attempts had been made to staple it back on without success. The wood casing around the closet door had been attached over the baseboard and there was a 3/8" space between it and the wall. Because the restroom was not accessible, it was necessary for me to request physical assistance and I could not use the the shower because I could not access the tub. We could not reach the controls on the AC unit because the desk had been set up in front of it. The furniture was quite chipped and the comforters were worn. The trim on the windows in the restaurant is peeling off and the entire building could use updating. Watch out for the brick walkway at the lobby entrance: the mortar is coming out and can make walking (particularly with a walker or heels) dangerous. Given the previously mentioned reunions and local activities, we were at a loss for any other place to get a room. For the past 15 years we have stayed at this hotel in Dunkirk, NY and enjoyed our time there. We had noticed a decline in standards but attributed it to a single experience but this is clearly a situation of continued low standards and poor guest services. We will not be returning to this location again and advise anyone looking to book a room near Dunkirk: save your $150 and go somewhere else!
