“Biggest Mistake!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2012

9/17/2012 We made our prepaid reservations several weeks ago, requesting a handicapped accessible room for an additional fee. Upon arrival we were kept waiting for over 30 minutes to check in. There were two large class reunions and a popular annual festival being held that weekend and only one desk clerk on duty! The guests in front of us in line were upset because they were paying cash for their rooms and the desk clerk informed them that their room fees were going to be deducted from their debit cards and the funds would be held for 10 days. Finally, we were informed by the desk clerk that the hotel DID NOT have accessible rooms and if we wanted a different room we would have to pay an additional fee for a suite (which was not accessible!). We were assigned to a room across from the hotel laundry (which was smelly) and next to the elevator (which was also noisy). The carpet outside our room had a large bleach stain. The carpet in our room was stained. The carpet baseboard had fallen off the wall and attempts had been made to staple it back on without success. The wood casing around the closet door had been attached over the baseboard and there was a 3/8" space between it and the wall. Because the restroom was not accessible, it was necessary for me to request physical assistance and I could not use the the shower because I could not access the tub. We could not reach the controls on the AC unit because the desk had been set up in front of it. The furniture was quite chipped and the comforters were worn. The trim on the windows in the restaurant is peeling off and the entire building could use updating. Watch out for the brick walkway at the lobby entrance: the mortar is coming out and can make walking (particularly with a walker or heels) dangerous. Given the previously mentioned reunions and local activities, we were at a loss for any other place to get a room. For the past 15 years we have stayed at this hotel in Dunkirk, NY and enjoyed our time there. We had noticed a decline in standards but attributed it to a single experience but this is clearly a situation of continued low standards and poor guest services. We will not be returning to this location again and advise anyone looking to book a room near Dunkirk: save your $150 and go somewhere else!

Room Tip: If you stay, get a room away from the laundry room and elevators

My wife and I wanted to get away for an overnight and we were very glad we chose the Clarion.
We got a jacuzzi suite and it was great, the room and jacuzzi were very large. The decor could use updating, this is the only reason I did not give a five star rating. The staff was super friendly and the free breakfast was average. The indoor pool was ok and the fitness center had everything we needed.

This hotel was a good deal . Location is great. We watched the sunset on Lake Erie. The room was big and clean. Nice choice of pillows. Cable Tv stations are limited. Bathroom was big and clean. Nice bar and restaurant . Breakfast was included and good.
Inside and outside swming pools are nice. The outside could be a bit nicer and should be updated
Overall a nice place

I could not really tell if the hotel was outdated or just very poorly maintained. Our room was dirty and our entire hall smelled of smoke and marijuana. The marijuana smell came from the room across the hall. This room was dark and unoccupied. I know this because the door was left wide open, as if to "air out" the room. I have to ask...who has access to these unsold rooms? Maybe one of the young inattentive kids working the front desk? I find this completely unacceptable. The manager, Ashok Chopra's apologies are empty and unprofessional. Upon reading some of the other reviews, this does not surprise me. Travelers, stay away from this hotel at all costs. Clarion, please do something about this run down hotel and incompetent manager.

The check in process was pleasant with the front desk staff. There was a shortage of luggage racks that made it difficult to get all of our baggage up to our room. The lobby was clean but could use some updates. The hallways were very warm (and it was cool outside!) and carpeting looked soiled and worn. Our room was close to the ice machine but it did not bother us. Again, the room was worn but clean. You could tell housekeeping did their very best with what they had. I was disappointed that there wasn't a mini fridge in the room like I asked them to provide. When I called the front desk they told me that "none" of the rooms had them. I found out later that they do have them but it was first come first served to get them! We opted to eat at the Fireside restaurant down the road instead of the restaurant on property. However, the complimentary breakfast was very good. All in all, it was an OK stay, on comfortable, clean beds, with good pillows and polite staff. I guess I was expecting a little more for the price and Clarion name.

Room Tip: Getting a "good" room is the luck of the draw!

we made a reservation on-line for a king. When we arrived they didn't have the king available. We went for a wedding that was up the road. They incorrectly blocked rooms for the whole wedding and the manager was disrespectful to the bride and groom and locked them out of there room claiming they hadn't booked for two days. The indian manager is disrespectful and the front desk is run by young clueless kids. I will never go back!!!
