I was referred to Gladsmere B&B by a kind woman at the local Historical Society when my two sisters and I recently planned a trip to Dolgeville for genealogy research. When I called for information I was pleasantly surprised to find that Gladsmere had one room to accommodate all of us with our own bed, a rare find in a B&B. Upon arrival, we were given a brief tour of their beautiful riverside home and shown the amenities. There is a rather formal parlor downstairs and a smaller, cozy room upstairs filled with games, TV, books, comfortable chairs, and lots of plants. We asked permission to have our dinner picnic there and found later in the afternoon a tableclothed card table has been set up for our use. We watched a DVD to round out our evening entertainment. Our bathroom was down the hall (robes provided); another room has a bathroom ensuite; a third room, when rented, shares the hall bathroom. In the morning, our very nice and carefully prepared full breakfast was served in a bright dining room. Diane and Bill Smith’s attention to every detail made our stay memorable, from carrying our bags upstairs upon arrival to the bag of cookies handed us for our trip home. During our stay, our hosts enthusiastically participated in our quest for tracking our ancestry by allowing us to meet with others in their parlor, making calls of inquiry to experts in local history, and relaying messages for our appointments.
Gladsmere is a nice blend of elegance and warmth with a large helping of attention to visitors. It is strictly non-smoking and fragrance free. We will look forward to our return one day!
