“Excellent food, great atmosphere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We had the pleasure of trying ALFA, Newly opened in the previous Saratoga Steakhouse. It was outstanding. Wait staff was excellent. Wine list was very extensive and not overly prices. We have been there twice now ith a party of 8 or more and have be treated both times to a wonderful experience. We would highly reccomend this dining experience for anyone looking for something a little new in different in the Syracuse area that isn't in a mall.

“Quiet, elegant, and delicious”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

We tried Alfa last night and were not disappointed. The menu is varied (maybe even a split personality) and includes very high end meals (warm fig salad with bleu cheese) and "fast food" (hamburgers). Although it offers something for everyone, it would seem that the fare be one or the other. Everything ordered was delicious and portions were perfect. Our waiter was somewhat distracted by another table, but the hostess quickly stepped in to fill the gap. The room was quiet, the table elegant, and the meal unhurried (so uncommon in Syracuse). We ordered drinks, appetizers, entrees, and desserts and the meal was over $200 for four. Somewhat pricey, but worth it.

“This Chef-driven farm to table could survive in NYC”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2013

There are two scales for rating a restaurant, you can compare it to its local competition, or you can compare it to the best in the world.

Compared to the rest of Syracuse this is five stars plus.
Compared to the best meals I've eaten across three continents, this is a solid Very Good. It's not the French Laundry or the Fat Duck or El Bulli, but that said, no one who appreciates good food will regret eating here.

The ingredients are locally sourced and extremely high quality. The preparation and presentation do the food justice, but never veers into fussy or pretentious.

We started with delicious carpaccio with cheese and a light mustard vinaigrette.

Then moved on to a cheese plate which was truly excellent. Comparable with anything I've had at Cote Basque or any other restaurant in the world.

I had the grass fed skirt steak, which was perfectly cooked, flavorful and had wonderful texture. Everything you could want. The vegetable side, particularly the grilled then lightly sauteed pepper and the steamed and sauteed squash were also delicious.

My wife had the duck burger, which I was initially a bit skeptical of, but after trying the cheese plate I knew that it would be good. It was indulgent without being too rich, complex and delicious. Their frites were good and the homemade ketchup was a tasty change from the standard Heinz.

We split the poached pear desert with homemade ice cream. It was delicious but there was a bit of crystalline structure in ice cream.

The service was good but not great, perhaps a tiny bit slow and a tiny bit disorganized, but the food more than made up for it. The reality is that this is not London, NY or Paris and there's no reason to expect the same hyper-efficient, hyper-professional service. Given a little time I think they'll iron out the kinks. In the end it was actually kind of charming in its friendliness and honesty.

Price is moderately expensive, with appetizers in the $10 to $15 and entree's mostly $20 to $29. We came out at just about $50 a person with drink, tax and tip. The portions are generous, but not gross and the quality of ingredients is palpable. In fact, I'm a little worried that the price was too low to support the portions, quality and craft that go into the meal. I just want them to stay in business, so I can come back and eat there again and again.

Overall, this is the best meal I've had in Syracuse. I would encourage everyone to try it. It's a far more relaxed and easy to get to location than downtown.
