“Casual atmosphere, good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2013

My son loves this place so we tried it while visiting him. Ther use of fresh local ingredients really adds to the quality of the food. Even there more common offereings, like meatloaf, have a unique twist, in this case a combination of venison, bison and beef with a delicious light mushroom gravy and served with bok choy. The other meal at our table was shrimp with coconut rice that was excellent. Though the prices are higher than one would expect for a such a casual family friendly style place, the serving sizes are substantial enough to satisfy a lumberjack.

“Very tasty food but the Blaze can be an issue”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

Our family keeps coming back to this restaurant because we LOVE the food. Some of their strongest dishes are Asian inspired - the Peking duck quesadilla, coconut lime soup, spring rolls, and evil jungle prince are all nothing short of amazing.

That said, this visit most of us were in more of a 'comfort food' mood. Two went for the bratwurst and we were VERY pleasantly rewarded with some of the best 'wurst we've ever had. The red cabbage, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes that came with were also delicious. I chose the umami salad (sans noodles) and was rewarded with a flavor packed wholesome dish. However, the Mongolian beef w/rice is best avoided - oily and lacking in spice it was one sad stir fry.

Lastly, the Blaze really does bring this place to its knees. We've done it and as long as you have the right attitude - the Umami Cafe ceases to be a restaurant and becomes more a culinary audience participation project - it is bearable. Not pleasurable...but bearable...and certainly the best place to be fed within the 'insanity zone' the Blaze creates.

“I wanna read this before going!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

We ate at this restaurant this past Saturday. Granted it was peak season as we & I'm sure everyone else had "BLAZE" tickets. We arrived at 5:30 and were a table of 9. Had it been 15 minutes later we'd be looking else where to eat as the line was out the door. No reservations are accepted. The service was terrible. And my husband guilted me in to giving her a decent tip because she was a kid. During our meal they wanted to shift us down and take away a table to sit another group of four. Really? As we're eating? Food was ok. Some dishes were better than others. Gluten free Mac & cheese was delicious. Cheeseburger was very good. And one of the few places that serves a "pink in the middle" cheeseburger. Bratwurst was very good. The ahi tuna average. Kids meals so so. They take pride in offering gluten free items yet they don't offer a gluten free beer. The service ruined the dinner. It could have been better.

“Fun, Friendly and Never Dull”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013 via mobile

My favorite dish is "Evil Jungle Prince" - both for the flavour of the creamy Thai curry, and for the way its name evokes the slightly offbeat character of this delightful restaurant. The menu ranges all over the culinary map and includes a large number of dishes to suit vegans, gluten-avoiders and locavores. The portions are large, the staff bend over backwards to accommodate special wishes, and as mentioned by other reviewers, The Umami has a relaxed atmosphere that is very child-friendly. The only downside to its popularity is that the restaurant can be very noisy - this was a problem for an elderly, hearing-impaired guest on a recent, busy evening. But I will surely return for another taste!

“Causal tasty dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

An interesting array of flavors that came together to provide a satisfying meal. A perfect stop before we visited the Pumpkin Blaze down the street. They have a fantastic pumpkin display which delighted us as we got in the spirit of Halloween. Great place, we will visit again.
