“Flavorful Food and Excellent Wine List”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2012

We enjoyed our meal at The Cellar which is from my perspective the best restaurant in Corning, and certainly the most innovative. Decor is modern. The bar up front can be noisy at times, but the dining room was peaceful. Service is attentive and staff were knowledgeable about the food selection, a little less so about the beverages. The wine list is presented on an iPad which allows you to sort by price, region, grape, etc. This is very helpful, particularly when combined with the written descriptions of the wine characteristics and ratings. Aided by the list we enjoyed an excellent Peachy Canyon Zinfandel. Our appetizers were Duck Three Ways and Arancini. The duck was nicely presented as prosciutto, rillettes, and foie gras. We thought the pickled ramps and cherries were an excellent accompaniment. The arancini, golf ball size lumps of fried risotto were served with a very good pesto, but we were disappointed that they lacked a filling like we've had at many other restaurants. A chicken breast was slightly overcooked but had an incredibly good flavor. A dish of ahi tuna was served perfectly rare with a spicey harissa sauce. Don't miss the duck fat fries as a side dish. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit, either for a drink and snacks or for a full meal.

“Great but no action on previous issues.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2012

We visited The Cellar again with a friend and had a great eating experience. The food is by far the main reason to go here. However, there are some still issues with the bar service. One in our party does not drink alcohol or sodas, and does not like Corning city water as it has a strong chlorine taste. So they asked for a sparkling water. This they had, but just as before, the stuff was warm and not in a chiller or the bar area. I ordered a Cosmopolitain, and what I got was a very weak drink tasting mainly of cranberry and lemon. This is common in places that try to maximise the profit by keeping the expensive contents of the cocktail diluted with the added cheaper components. Prior to this visit the cosmopoliatin was excellent and an attraction to go there, but alas now it is just another wet drink!

The food however is outstanding and an eclectic mix of various foods from around the world, fresh, inspiring and delectable. The wine list is extensive but very expensive with mark ups of over 100%, typical for NYC restaurants but not typical in Corning. However they have the wine selection on electronic tablets which makes comparisons difficult having to switch from page to page to compare, not user friendly for this application. Thankfully, if you ask, they have it in the more useable book/wine list form. I would definately return again, but this could become our main restaurant in winter (travel being more difficult) if they ever get the bar staff and service to a consistanly high level of service and attention to bar keeping.

Thanks

“poor service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2012

the food is good, but expensive and i haven't ever been here when the service hasn't been bad, they're not customer friendly - with the prices they charge you'd think they'd be bending over backwards for you, but it's exactly the opposite.

“Prices are much higher than shown here.”

Made a reservation but never ate here. Looks nice inside and the food looked good but most entrees are priced over $30.

“A very enjoyable experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2012

Service was quick but still allowed us to relax, take our time & enjoy our meal. Atmosphere was nice: good music, interesting decor, not too crowded and the restroom was very clean (always a good sign). Excellent food. If you go, definitely try the lamb lollipops. We also had the cheese board, the quinoa sushi and truffled potato wedges. Didn't try any entrees because we were saving room for dessert. We had the pot de creme and the flourless chocolate cake. Both delicious. Plenty of variety for the vegetarian I had with me. Tried several of the red wines; probably the best wine selection in the area.
