“Over priced for what it offers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2011

We phoned on the Tuesday night to book a room/cottage for the Labour Day long weekend (for two nights) and was told it was full. Got a phone call back the next day stating she had someone who originally booked for three nights but couldn't confirm the reservation. She asked if we wanted to go ahead to book the cottage and she would let us only book two nights for $125/night. So we went ahead, didn't think too much. Arrived there, pretty nice people but the cottage wasn't very nice. We had #2 cottage, which was the closet to the water. The scenery was pretty but the cottage was very old and smelled pretty mouldy. It had two very small bedrooms and a small living room. The kitchen wasn't really a kitchen as others have commented, it had a sink, a very old fridge and a stove top with two gas burners. The worst part was the private cottage located behind ours. Both nights we were there, there was a party going on in that private cottage. It was very noisy and it lasted until around 3 in the morning. Reading all the reviews I figured I paid too much for it. Looks like we were charged 3 nights anyways as most people paid around 65 to 85 per night and the published rate on the website was also around this range. Would certainly not recommend it for $125/night.

The cottages are down by the water but the motel rooms are at the top of a steep hill. The gazebo is a great place for drinks or relaxing with a great view of the seaway. We ordered pizza and ate dinner out there and then had coffee there the next morning. Nice, clean rooms, reasonable rates, clean swimming pool, ice is available and there is a large yard with lots of trees for shade. This place is pet-friendly and they provide free dock space and room to park your boat trailer. You would have to launch the boat somewhere else because the dock and water are down a steep stairway. The views are quite nice and our group of 7 plus baby spent a very comfortable time there.

Room Tip: Call ahead but we got ours about 1 week prior to arrival.

We stayed there this weekend. We showed up with no reservations. We took cabin #9 which is located near the water. The cabin was small and old but....very quaint for 2 adults. Large grassy area at every cabin, lawn chairs and a small propane grill at every picnic table. Each room has its own table. Very, very, clean inside with cable and internet. Bath room is small but has a good shower, sink and toilet. Large outside trash can on the side of the cabins. The smaller cabins have air conditioning. We did not have our boat but the docking looked to me to be able to hold probably (4) 18-20 foot runabouts. Most people though launched their boats and took them out at night with ample parking of the boats at their room. This is not the Holiday Inn but typical rustic adirondack style. We have paid much more for much worse in the past 30 years. Fathers day weekend cost us $65 a night. Animal and biker friendly. Very nice manager that spoke English and was very accomadating. The towels are a little on the small side but no problem getting extras.

Room Tip: Take a cabin for the views, space and parking.

Recently stayed for an extended weekend and found accomodations very nice. It is more of a rustic cabin but was just what we were looking for in a vacation. It is located in a nice area away from tourists but close enough to find lots of activity in Alexandria Bay. The weather could have been better but was very happy with choice of accomodations.

We found this place online and since we have never been to the area, we took it. The room smelled moldy, the towels were postage stamp sized and were ripped and frayed. We stayed at a Motel 6 for 1/2 the price and was alot better. I would not recommend this place. I can understand now why they had so many available rooms.

The location is fantastic, and the view is beautiful. Keeping in mind that we were in an older cottage we really expected things to be cleaner and more up to date than what we found. We were mislead to believe that we had a kitchen - we had a sink, a stove w/2 burners, no oven and a dorm sized fridge. Not possible to keep a weeks worth of food there.

This was our first trip to 1000 islands region - so, I have nothing to compare my stay to. That being said, the Fair Winds is not horrible, but you do get what you pay for. For $85 we had a motel room with 2 beds, a tv, fridge, and microwave. The pool was warm - and the views were amazing. We were disappointed by the picnic/bbq situation. There was 1 picnic table for the 12 rooms to share, and 1 gazebo which was monopolized by 1 person for the few days we were there. The BBQ's were a disgrace. The owners should be ashamed of themselves for even stating they have bbq's available. They were all rusty, and the unit brought to our room was filthy and filled with garbage which we were told to dump in the woods next to the rooms (??? ... what ). The grass was cut, but there were clippings everywhere. It didn't surprise us the gate wasn't moved to cut the lawn, so the lawn was long under the gate. Small stuff ... but, gives you the impression the person(s) maintaining are not giving it a 100%. All in all, if you need a place to rest your head - and plan on spending minimal time on the property. This might be the motel for you.
